Lewis A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS May 2008 Committee: Jeffrey Brown, Advisor Becca Cragin ii ABSTRACT Jeffrey Brown Advisor Through their representations of torture, 24 and Battlestar Galactica build on a wider political discourse. Although 24 began production on its first season several months before the terrorist attacks, the show has become a contested space where opinions about the war on terror and related political and military adventures are played out. The producers of Battlestar Galactica similarly use the space of television to raise questions and problematize issues of war. Together, these two television shows reference a long history of discussion of what role torture should play not just in times of war but also in a liberal democracy. This project seeks to understand the multiple ways that ideological discourses have played themselves out through representations of torture in these television programs. This project begins with a critique of the popular discourse of torture as it portrayed in the popular news media. Using an ideological critique and theories of televisual realism, I argue that complex representations of torture work to both challenge and reify dominant and hegemonic ideas about what torture is and what it does. This project also leverages post-structural analysis and critical gender theory as a way of understanding exactly what ideological messages the programs’ producers are trying to articulate. -

(August 2012) Jeremy Russell Miller, B.A., University of Arkansas; M.A., University of Arkansas Co-Chairs of Advisory Committee: Dr. Joshua Heuman Dr. Aisha Durham Transgender representations generally distance the transgender characters from the audience as objects of ridicule, fear, and sympathy. This distancing is accomplished through the use of specific narrative conventions and visual codes. In this dissertation, I analyze representations of transgender individuals in popular film comedies, thrillers, and independent dramas. Through a textual analysis of 24 films, I argue that the narrative conventions and visual codes of the films work to prevent identification or connection between the transgender characters and the audience. The purpose of this distancing is to privilege the heteronormative identities of the characters over their transgender identities. This dissertation is grounded in a cultural studies approach to representation as constitutive and constraining and a positional approach to gender that views gender identity as a position taken in a specific social context. -

FROM THE NATIONAL ALLIANCE FOR MUSICAL THEAtre’s PresideNT Welcome to our 24th Annual Festival of New Musicals! The Festival is one of the highlights of the NAMT year, bringing together 600+ industry professionals for two days of intense focus on new musical theatre works and the remarkably talented writing teams who create them. This year we are particularly excited not only about the quality, but also about the diversity—in theme, style, period, place and people—represented across the eight shows that were selected from over 150 submissions. We’re visiting 17th-century England and early 20th century New York. We’re spending some time in the world of fairy tales—but not in ways you ever have before. We’re visiting Indiana and Georgia and the world of reality TV. Regardless of setting or stage of development, every one of these shows brings something new—something thought-provoking, funny, poignant or uplifting—to the musical theatre field. This Festival is about helping these shows and writers find their futures. Beyond the Festival, NAMT is active year-round in supporting members in their efforts to develop new works. This year’s Songwriters Showcase features excerpts from just a few of the many shows under development (many with collaboration across multiple members!) to salute the amazing, extraordinarily dedicated, innovative work our members do. She has created rich and diverse soundscapes for film and television productions that have won awards including a Daytime Emmy, a BAFTA, an Independent Spirit Award, and a GLAAD Media Award. She has musical directed shows featuring artists Sandra Bernhard, Liza Minnelli, Rufus Wainwright, Leisha Hailey, and Justin Vivian Bond. In 2019, the Sundance Film Institute invited Carla to perform at the Sundance Film Festival. Skywalker Sound and the Sundance Institute also selected Carla as a Composer Fellow for the Sundance Film Music and Sound Design Lab, during which she developed her haunting and vocally-driven score to Keola Racela’s horror comedy PORNO which premiered at SXSW in 2019, and is set for a theatrical release in April 2020 (Fangoria). According to Variety Magazine, “Carla Patullo’s score is a nicely poker-faced channeling of fantasy-action soundtrack tropes from a generation ago.” Carla’s recent credits include MY NAME IS MARIA DE JESUS (HBO), TEEN TITANS GO! (Cartoon Network), PORNO (SXSW), the Independent Spirit award-winning film SPA NIGHT (Sundance, Netflix), the award-winning film JEANNE CORDOVA (Outfest), LETTER TO ANITA (Outfest), PIZZA FACE (San Diego Comic-Con), and LOTTE THAT SILHOUETTE GIRL (2018 IDA Shortlist). She is currently working on the feature film SHADOWMAKER (Trick Studio) about animation pioneer Lotte Reiniger; and Gregorio Davila’s LGBTA documentary LA: A QUEER HISTORY. -

GLAAD and Proctor & Gamble gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) characters released the results of the first LGBTQ Inclusion in on television.
