ANNUAL REPORT “Immersing myself more actively in the JWA experience has helped ease my anxiety and fill the space where it used to live with stories of triumph, hope, and inspiration.”

Joan Rachlin

“Being a Jewish woman is really the core of my identity, and I’m grateful that there is an organization that explores all the aspects of what that means in today’s world. I appreciate the way you honor the achievements of Jewish women throughout history, while still remaining current.”

2 ANNUAL REPORT

The mission of the Jewish Women’s Archive is to document the stories of Jewish women, elevate their voices, and inspire them to be agents of change.

JWA is the world’s largest source of information about Jewish women and a dynamic feminist organization that shapes discourse and inspires action. By connecting a global audience, training the thought leaders of tomorrow, and sparking conversations on gender, Judaism, and history across multimedia platforms and programs, JWA provides insight and context for today’s world and enables people of all genders and backgrounds to envision a more just and equitable future.

3 MESSAGE from the BOARD CHAIR

Dear Friends,

The Jewish Women’s Archive contains a story eerily familiar to our own day. Roughly 100 years ago, Lillian D. Wald (1867-1940), a woman raised in a Jewish home filled with books and music in Rochester, NY, embarked on a careerin nursing that thrust her into the midst of the Spanish flu epidemic in City. As Chair of the Nurses’ Emergency Council, Wald signed a handbill calling on every housewife, dietician, and nurse to serve the American Red Cross and help “relieve the situation” engendered by the disease ravaging the country and the globe. The Jewish press of the time reported on mounting numbers of cases and dispensed advice to its readers. “If anyone should sneeze,” the Yiddish Forverts warned its readers, “[do] not sneeze into someone’s face, but into a handkerchief.” Strong women were critical to the fight. As Wald’s announcement made clear: This was “A Stern Task for Stern Women.”

The members of JWA’s glorious staff, led by our exceptional CEO, Judith Rosenbaum, represent today’s stern women undergoing a stern task. While not on the medical frontlines, the women (and a few good men) of JWA have nimbly pivoted to address and connect our community in ways big and small. We have expanded our We Celebrate tributes to include honoring health care workers, mothers, and teachers at this critical time. We are attracting thousands of new contacts to our expanded line-up of virtual programs. (Who could have imagined a year ago that over 3,000 people would sign up for our Quarantine Book Talks?!) We are reaching families and children learning at home with alternative educational activities that allow them to scour our resources. We are adding more episodes to our popular podcast, Can We Talk?.

I’m proud that JWA is creating a community that so many of us crave these days. With nearly 25 years of experience and expertise, we continue to be on the frontlines of technology, amplifying Jewish women’s stories for an ever-growing population of online users. In so doing, we connect one to another and fight against loneliness and isolation.

Thank you to our many supporters––including those brand-new to JWA––for allowing stern women to step up to a stern task.

May the new year bring you sweet blessings of health and safety in 5781.

L’shanah tovah,

Rabbi Carole B. Balin, PhD Chair, Board of Directors

5 REFLECTIONS from CEO JUDITH ROSENBAUM

Dear Friends,

It is difficult, in this time of deep uncertainty about the state of our world and what is to come, to take stock of the past year. But we know that one important ingredient in resilience is the ability to celebrate successes, even in the midst of challenges.

I am so proud of the work that JWA has done in this past fiscal year, and I am truly grateful for your support, which made it all possible. In a time of upheaval and isolation, you helped JWA connect people to one another, offering intellectual nourishment and meaningful conversations infused with stories of resilience, resistance, and wisdom. Through our donor-supported content and expanded programming—be it on the podcast, through Quarantine Book Talks, or in thoughtful blog posts—we explored the implications of this moment and nurtured a collective sense of hope and possibility for the future. In typical JWA fashion, we drew upon history for strength and guidance. And we did it all nimbly, creatively, and with as much good humor as is possible during a pandemic!

I am also proud that in these challenging times, your contributions sustained and advanced our core work: fostering the leadership of the next generation, bringing new insights and diversity to our Encyclopedia expansion project, and documenting history as it unfolds. We have continued to cultivate collaborations across our many initiatives, knowing that we are stronger together. I hope you will take this opportunity to learn more about JWA’s achievements and impact.

Thank you for making JWA’s work possible, and for helping to change the story of our world.

Onward,

Judith Rosenbaum, PhD Chief Executive Officer

6 HIGHLIGHTS FROM AN EXCEPTIONAL YEAR

JWA’s 2020 fiscal year was anything but predictable. As Covid-19 swept across the globe and people settled into their new isolated lives at home, it became clear that JWA had an invaluable role to play. With the support of our donors, JWA was able to draw from our rich archive of resources and well-established digital platforms to provide connection, reflection, and hope to a captive, worldwide audience. What follows are highlights from the fiscal year, including some of the priorities that took sharper focus in the last quarter.

7 Creating Virtual Community

In early March, JWA organized quickly to expand online programs and provide virtual community to our audience stuck at home. Online offerings such as the Quarantine Book Talks (QBT) and Online History Courses featuring guest writers, artists, and scholars attracted thousands of people around the world in search of meaningful engagement.

“I cannot thank the Jewish Women’s Archive enough for your marvelous virtual programming. I hope that after our self-isolation ends, JWA will continue to provide the wonderful online programs that you are now offering. I look forward to them each week. Thank you so much.” Linda Wimmer

Online History Courses and QBT are made possible in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. Any views, findings, conclusions, or recommendations expressed in these programs do not necessarily represent those of NEH.

8 Cultivating the Next Generation of Leaders

In August 2019, the seventh cohort of JWA’s Rising Voices Fellowship embarked on a year of leadership development, using writing as a tool for social justice and personal growth. When the lives of these eighteen fellows were unexpectedly thrown off course due to Covid-19, our RVF team strengthened the network of support through extra online gatherings and more frequent communications. In May 2020, the deeply- bonded cohort graduated the program and joined the growing community of alumnae, now a group of nearly 100 young adults.

“Thank you for giving me the Check out the RVF 2019-20 opportunity to grow alongside cohort’s culminating zine. such inspiring girls. This fellowship has made my junior year brighter, especially during a difficult time.” Ilana Drake, RVF 2019-20

9 Listening and Responding to Today’s Issues

JWA’s redesigned blog, Jewish Women, Amplified, and podcast, Can We Talk?, proved to be instrumental platforms for addressing important issues this past year—from battling stigmas around menstruation, to grappling with racism in the Jewish community, to addressing representations of Jewish women in popular culture, to facing a global pandemic, and much more. Readers and listeners tuned into the blog and podcast for engaging stories that offered unique perspectives grounded in lessons from our past.

“Each episode speaks to me. Your podcast is such a strong reminder of the ideas and soul strings that really connect us to one another. We’re listening and appreciating.” Anonymous

10 Documenting Communal History

In November, JWA officially launched the new story-collecting app, Story Aperture, engaging the public as our partner in documenting history. The app offers an easy-to-use recording device and suggested interview prompts on a variety of themes such as race and ethnicity, #MeToo, voting stories, and now the pandemic. New, ongoing partnerships with organizations such as the Council of American Jewish Museums, Washington State Jewish Historical Society, and Hadassah are bringing the app to a wider audience, helping JWA document and preserve the diverse experiences of Jewish women around the world.

“Through interviewing my mom with Story Aperture, I learned a lot about her life as a woman and a rabbi. I also realized the extent to which every Jewish woman relates to her identity in different ways. I really loved this experience.” Eleanor Harris, RVF 2019-20

Since 2017, JWA’s We Celebrate collection has enabled our audience to commemorate the milestones in Jewish women’s lives with online tributes. In the spring, JWA launched special campaigns to encourage tributes for women exhibiting exceptional bravery in the face of the pandemic—health care workers, mothers, and teachers. The response more than doubled the We Celebrate collection in a matter of weeks, spreading much deserved—and much needed—words of gratitude and love.

“I am beyond touched by this tribute and show of support. To put a smile on a child’s face every day, even over Zoom, is not a job, but a privilege. I am filled with gratitude.” Judi Rapaport, teacher

We depend on the generosity of our donors to ensure JWA continues providing essential digital resources and virtual community to users around the world. In a tumultuous year that brought financial challenges for many individuals and institutions, we are especially grateful for our community of supporters who helped sustain JWA and increase our impact.

Please join us in Fiscal Year 2021 by making your annual donation or considering a planned gift to secure a lasting legacy. Your tax-deductible contribution can be made online at jwa.org/donate or by calling the Development Department at 617-860-3010. Thank you for your partnership and support!
