Fahrzeuge Nach Nationen, Deutschland Fahrzeuge nach Nationen, Deutschland Vorwort Es ist ersichtlich, dass die Führungsstruktur der Wehrmacht an der Spitze werde simpel noch erstklassig war. Insbesondere das Fehlen eines regulären Forums zur Koordinierung von militärischen und nicht-militärischen Angelegenheiten gab dem gesamten Apparat ein altmodisches, nahezu archaisches Ansehen. Man könnte die Wehrmacht mit einem Rennauto vergleichen, dessen Fahrer mit sich selbst uneins war. Mehr noch, dieser Fahrer hatte nicht annähernd genug daran gedacht, die Leistung seines Autos mit dem vorhandenen Strassennetz, mit der Kraftstoffversorgung und der Organisation der Instandsetzung abzustimmen. Es geht allerdings viel zu weit zu sagen, dass allein der Fahrer alle Schuld dafür trug. Wie das Streben des Oberkommando Heer (OKH) nach Vormachtstellung zeigt, hatte die Maschine ihre eigenen Traditionen den Erfordernissen einer modernen Kriegsführung, einen Weltkrieg führenden Grossmacht angepasst werden. Technisch gesehen, stand die Wehrmacht an einem Scheideweg. Einerseits verfügte sie mit Panzer, Flugzeugen, Funkgeräten, elektronischen Navigationsmittel für die Flugzeuge und vielem mehr über das modernste Kriegsgerät jener Zeit. Andererseits bestanden ca. drei Viertel ihrer Truppen noch aus marschierender Infanterie, und sie verliess sich auf den bespannten Transport. Im späteren Verlauf des Krieges wurde dieses Verhältnis noch schlechter. Bereits 1940 war die britische Armee, bei Dünkirchen vom Festland vertrieben wurde, vollständig motorisiert ("Ausrüstung glänzend, Führung denkbar schlecht" – so der Kommentar des deutschen Generalstabchefs des Heeres, Franz Halder. Das US-Heer war selbstverständlich vollumfassend von Motorfahrzeugend abhängig, und selbst die sowjetische Armee hatte eine halbe Million Lastkraftwagen aus den USA erhalten, inklusive die notwendigen Betriebsstoffe. Aber auch sie konnte niemals auf Infanterie noch auf Pferde verzichten. Im Gegensatz zu den alliierten Armeen ging der Motorisierungsgrad des deutschen Heeres immer mehr zurück. Einzig der Afrikakrieg musste ohne Pferde auskommen. Der Mythus Wehrmacht Einer dieser Mythen ist - das Bild einer hochmanövrierbaren Armee, die sich buchstäblich auf den gepanzerte Transporter, Lastwagen, Motorrädern bewegt. Dies spiegelt sich auch in Spielfilmen wider: Sowjetische Rotarmisten sind ständig zu Fuss, bestenfalls auf Karren. Die deutsche Armee ist zu 100%, motorisiert und umgeht blitzschnell die befestigten Stellungen. In Tat und Wahrheit war ein kleiner Teil der deutschen Wehrmacht motorisiert, mehr als 80% der Einheiten war zu Fuss unterwegs und der Nachschub erfolgte mit Pferdewagen. Das Artillerieregiment einer Infanteriedivision hatte landesweit: 2696-Mann und 2249-Pferde. In einer Division hatte es mehr als 6'000 Pferde. Im Wehrmachtsmodell des Jahres 1941 gab es mehr als 1 Millionen Pferde in den Infanteriedivisionen. When heavy vehicles were developed for war, the civilian infrastructure presented a potential restriction to vehicular mobil- ity. In Sweden, bridges were seen as a critical component of this infrastructure. It took two decades and the experiences of a second world war for the country to come to terms with this restriction. This article addresses the question as to why Swedish tanks suddenly became much heavier in the early 1940s. The country’s bridges play a key role in what happened, and the article explains how. It is a story about how a military deci- sion came to be outdated long before it was upgraded. Keywords tanks – infrastructure – transition In the 1920s and 30s, Sweden produced and imported various forms of armored vehicles—primarily so-called ‘tanks’—which had been spectacularly intro- duced in The Great War. In the case of tank technology, however, a sudden shift occurred in the early 1940s. Within a year Swedish tank weights doubled and never returned to earlier levels. Such a drastic shift is not a normal part of technological development, or at least cannot be explained by any sudden change in tank technology itself. The sudden deviation from a more gradual development path calls for an answer as to what made the shift occur.

Between 1922 and 1933, four facilities were built in Russia by the two governments, where a variety of training and technological exercises were conducted. These facilities were particularly focused on advances in chemical and biological weapons, airplanes and tanks. The most influential of the four facilities was the tank testing and training grounds (Panzertruppenschule in the German) built along the Kama River, near Kazan in North- Central Russia. Led by German instructors, the school’s curriculum was based around lectures, war games, and technological testing. Soviet and German students studied and worked side by side; German officers in fact often wore the Soviet uniform while at the school, to show solidarity with their fellow officers. Among the German alumni of the school were many of the most famous practitioners of mobile warfare during the Second World War, such as Guderian, Manstein, Kleist and Model. This system of education proved highly innovative. During seven years of operation, the school produced a number of extremely important technological and tactical innovations. Among the new technologies were a new tank chassis system, superior guns, and - perhaps most importantly- a radio that could function within a tank.
