Wulff Apeltunet 7, 181 48 Lidingo, Sweden [email protected] Abstract The military community is a secluded part of society and normally has to act on the conditions offered by its civilian surroundings. When heavy vehicles were developed for war, the civilian infrastructure presented a potential restriction to vehicular mobil- ity. In Sweden, bridges were seen as a critical component of this infrastructure. It took two decades and the experiences of a second world war for the country to come to terms with this restriction. This article addresses the question as to why Swedish tanks suddenly became much heavier in the early 1940s. The country’s bridges play a key role in what happened, and the article explains how. It is a story about how a military deci- sion came to be outdated long before it was upgraded. Keywords tanks – infrastructure – transition In the 1920s and 30s, Sweden produced and imported various forms of armored vehicles—primarily so-called ‘tanks’—which had been spectacularly intro- duced in The Great War. In the case of tank technology, however, a sudden shift occurred in the early 1940s. Within a year Swedish tank weights doubled and never returned to earlier levels. Such a drastic shift is not a normal part of technological development, or at least cannot be explained by any sudden change in tank technology itself. The sudden deviation from a more gradual development path calls for an answer as to what made the shift occur.

September 2019 Millionenauftrag aus Ungarn – Rheinmetall fertigt Waffenanlagen und Wannen für Panzerhaubitze 2000 und Kampfpanzer Leopard 2 Rheinmetall übernimmt eine wichtige Rolle bei der Modernisierung des ungarischen Heeres. So fertigt das Unternehmen Waffenanlagen und Feuerleittechnik für 44 Kampfpanzer Leopard 2 sowie Waffenanlagen, Feuerleittechnik und Fahrgestelle für 24 Panzerhaubitzen 2000. Ebenso gehören dreizehn HX-und TGS-Lastkraftwagen zum Auftragspaket. Ein entsprechender Liefervertrag wurde vor kurzem unterzeichnet. Der Auftragswert beläuft sich auf rund 300 MioEUR netto. Die Lieferungen beginnen 2021 und dauern bis 2025. Rheinmetall ist bei dem Vorhaben Partner von Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW). KMW hatte im Dezember 2018 von den ungarischen Landstreitkräften den Auftrag zur Lieferung von 44 neu gefertigten Kampfpanzern Leopard 2A7+ und 24 neu gefertigten Panzerhaubitzen PzH2000 erhalten. Ungarn wird damit der 19. Leopard-2-Nutzerstaat und der achte Nutzerstaat der PzH2000. Rheinmetall ist der Entwickler und Originalhersteller der 120 mm-Glattrohr-Technologie, die in allen Versionen des Kampfpanzers Leopard 2 verwendet wird. Gleiches gilt für die 155mm-L52-Waffenanlage der Panzerhaubitze 2000 (PzH 2000). Die weltweit bewährte 120mm-Glattrohrtechnologie wurde durch Rheinmetall sowohl waffen- als auch munitionsseitig stetig weiterentwickelt. Die für den Leopard 2A7+ vorgesehene druckhöhere 120mm-Waffenanlage L55A1 ist Ende 2017 erfolgreich qualifiziert worden und wird seit Mitte 2018 bereits für zwei Leopard 2-Nutzerstaaten geliefert und eingerüstet. Die Waffenanlage L55A1 ist darüber hinaus zum Verschießen der programmierbaren Mehrzweckpatrone DM11 befähigt. Rheinmetall verfügt darüber hinaus über eine umfangreiche Kettenfahrzeug-Expertise bis hin zum OEM. Die Fahrgestelle der Panzerhaubitze 2000 sind bei Rheinmetall entwickelt worden.     Operation Dauntless Unit Preview: Self-Propelled Artillery Both the British and German players have a small number of self-propelled artillery units available in Operation Dauntless. This unit preview will briefly examine these sparse but handy units. British Self-Propelled Artillery The British 147th (Essex Yeomanry) Field Regiment consists of three batteries of four each "Sexton" self-propelled 25-pounder guns (shown below). As part of the 8th Armoured Brigade in Operation Dauntless, these are the only artillery units which are always available to the British player. These SP guns had a maximum gun elevation of 35 degrees, yielding a maximum range of 11,000 yards (about 25-26 Operation Dauntless map hexes). Unlike traditional artillery, these units can both move and fire in a single turn, with a respectable 12 Movement Allowance (up to 24 road hexes per turn). "The 147th fought as a self-propelled artillery unit using 25-pounder field guns mounted on Sherman tank chassis." "147 (Essex Yeomanry) Regiment was converted to 25 pounder guns and landed on D Day to fight through Germany." Note that there are 3 variants of the Sexton, but only the Sexton II was based on a Grizzly (M4A1 Sherman) hull, so these vehicles were the Sexton II's. First built in 1943, Sextons were available in the field from June '44 onward.

    JAGDPANZER38 3711 HETZER EARLY eduard 1:35 FIRST, A FEW WORDS... ...ON THE WAR: The Second World War, from a German perspective, was not evolving favorably in 1943. Heavy losses at Stalingrad, the capitulation of German and Italian forces in North Africa in May, the defeat at the Battle of Kursk in July, and the Allied landings in Italy put increasing stresses on the German military. Furthermore, an increasingly concentrated fury from above in the form of the allied bombing campaign appeared that threatened to reduce the Reich to rubble. This campaign began to extract a heavy toll on the German ability to produce and support her weapons, including the production of tanks. On the other hand, war production in the Soviet Union and the United States steadily increased, and production figures attained were in the thousands. The German planners and designers were faced with some difficult decisions with respect on how to address the situation. One The original Pz.38(t) light tank effective method was to construct a series of tank hunter/destroyers on the chassis of existing tanks, foto V.Francev via MBI resulting in vehicles such as the Sturmgeschütz, for use in infantry support. One huge advantage of such vehicles was their relative simplicity when compared to the classic tank. There was no turret, and the complexities associated with the manufacture and installation of the turret were eliminated. The vehicles would be armed with Pak 39 anti tank guns of 75mm caliber, and were called Jagdpanzer (Fighter Tank - Tank Destroyer). Progressively, this concept was applied to other tank chassis as well.

Fältförsök, underrättelser och stridserfarenheter har visat att dessa raketer är vanligt förekommande samt svåra att detektera med radarsensorer. En modell för hur räckviddsökning beror på olika sensorpositioner har skapats genom att använda dokument från USA och forna Sovjetunionen beskrivande ballistik tillsammans med teorier för hur räckvidd påverkas av radarmålarea (RCS) samt en beskrivning av RCS tillhandahållen av FOI. Resultat från körningar i MATLAB visar att sensorpositioner inom 300 meter från skyddsobjektet är fördelaktiga vid en skottvidd av 3000 meter. Som tumregel för att uppnå maximal sensorprestanda bör strävan vara att placera sensorn på ett avstånd från skyddsobjektet understigande 10% av förväntad skottvidd.     The Secret School of War: The Soviet-German Tank Academy at Kama THESIS Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Arts in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Ian Johnson Graduate Program in History The Ohio State University 2012 Master's Examination Committee: Jennifer Siegel, Advisor Peter Mansoor David Hoffmann Copyright by Ian Ona Johnson 2012 Abstract This paper explores the period of military cooperation between the Weimar Period German Army (the Reichswehr), and the Soviet Union. Between 1922 and 1933, four facilities were built in Russia by the two governments, where a variety of training and technological exercises were conducted. These facilities were particularly focused on advances in chemical and biological weapons, airplanes and tanks. The most influential of the four facilities was the tank testing and training grounds (Panzertruppenschule in the German) built along the Kama River, near Kazan in North- Central Russia. Led by German instructors, the school’s curriculum was based around lectures, war games, and technological testing. Soviet and German students studied and worked side by side; German officers in fact often wore the Soviet uniform while at the school, to show solidarity with their fellow officers. Among the German alumni of the school were many of the most famous practitioners of mobile warfare during the Second World War, such as Guderian, Manstein, Kleist and Model. This system of education proved highly innovative. During seven years of operation, the school produced a number of extremely important technological and tactical innovations. Among the new technologies were a new tank chassis system, superior guns, and - perhaps most importantly- a radio that could function within a tank.
