Greta Adorni was born in Milan where she graduated in Philosophy and continued her studies with an MA in Curatorial Practices at the Brera Academy. At Birkbeck, she completed her MA in History of Art, which gave her the opportunity to combine philosophical theoretical frameworks with memory and trauma studies. This article is the result of her MA dissertation [email protected] / __________________________________________ This article intends to look at the ways in which three works of art have attempted to deal with the issue of representation and mediation of the refugee crisis. 1 Rather than delving into historical or political discourses surrounding this humanitarian crisis, this article will analyse three works of contemporary art: Fuocoammare (Gianfranco Rosi, 2016), Raft of Lampedusa (Jason deCaires Taylor, 2016) and Incoming (Richard Mosse, 2017) mostly through the spectrum of Professor at UNSW National Institute for Experimental Arts and curator Jill Bennett’s theory of ‘empathic vision’ and ‘transactive art’. Political Philosopher Giorgio Agamben’s notions ‘bare life’ and the ‘Muselmann’ will also be regarded as crucial to an empathic visual engagement with art. These theories have the purpose of injecting new approaches to the idea of ‘breathing through the medium’ as a way of activating representations, and thereby maintaining the meaningfulness of representations of refugees. The three works were selected for their alternative approach to the representation and utilization of the art medium. I will analyse Incoming, a documentary made by Richard Mosse in collaboration with Ben Frost and Trevor Tweeten and screened for the first time at the Curve Gallery, at the Barbican Centre in London from 15 February to 23 April 2017. -

The origins of this issue of Alphaville lie in collaborations between the Forced Migration Research Network (UNSW – University of New South Wales) and the Refugee Council of Australia, and in the inspiration afforded us by international colleagues and guests to Sydney (Fadma Aït Mous), Liverpool (Dennis Del Favero) and Lincoln (Hoda Afshar) universities. We have benefited from these academic alliances and invitations, but we also embrace the widest notion of hospitality, whereby the moment of arrival, the request for assistance and shelter, and subsequent decisions over citizenship and long-term residency are located in a moral environment of welcome and mutual learning. CROSS OF MALTA AND LOGO USAGE Cross of Malta The Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States adopted for its official seal, the Cross of Malta, which has a heritage of honor, duty, sacrifice and courage that dates back to the 11th century. Each design aspect of VFW’s Cross of Malta symbolizes something special. The Great Seal of the U.S. contains a modified scroll from “E Pluribus Unum” (Out of many, one) to “Pro Deo Pro Patria” (For God For Country) together with the cross and radiating rays symbolize the character, vows and purposes distinguishing VFW as an order of warriors who have traveled far from home to defend sacred principles. Its eight points represent the beatitudes prescribed in the Sermon on the Mount: Blessed are the poor in spirit, the meek, the pure, the merciful, the peacemakers; blessed are they who mourn, seek righteousness and are persecuted for righteousness’ sake. VFW added the sun’s rays between the eight points and the cross. These emphasize the vigor and warmth with which the present-day brotherhood is pledged to defend the nation and to extend its mercy. Superimposed over the cross is the American eagle—the sacred symbol of a proud nation and people. While the Maltese Cross has religious origins and was used by the crusading Knights of St. John as a battle standard centuries ago, it is equally relevant today as a symbol of all those battling for noble ideals. Biography MWO Jean-Marc Belletête
Biography MWO Jean-Marc Belletête Born in Drummondville, QC, MWO Belletête enrolled in the Canadian Forces on January 18, 1974 as an EGS technician. He started his basic training on February 24, 1974 at St-Jean-sur -Richelieu followed up with Basic English training in St-Jean and Borden from May 1974 to November 1974. He proceeded than to his trade course at CFSME from November 1974 to July 1975. In July 1975, he was posted to CFS Senneterre, a radar site but just for a short time as he was temporarily transferred to CFS Alert for a six month tour. Afterwards in July 1978 he transferred to CFB North Bay in the NORAD underground complex and on the base construction section. During that time he graduated from his TQ5 and TQ 6A at CFB Chilliwack and was promoted to the rank of MCpl. He than accepted a transfer at the school of Military engineering CSFME at CFB Chilliwack on August 1980 as an instructor and got promoted to Sgt. In June 1983 he was transferred to CFB Trenton and took part of the newly implemented MRT, a mobile repair team under Aircom, where he is promoted to WO. After 4 years living in suitcases, he is transferred to CFB Goose Bay as a utilities Officer and got involved in the amalgamation of the radar site to an air base changeover. In December 1988, he completed his TQ 7 and got promoted to the rank of MWO. He than got transferred to CFB Montreal (St-Hubert) as the assistant to the Utility Officer. -

The possibility of rebellion is a check—sometimes the only check—on authoritarian rule. Although mutinies in which crews seized control of their vessels were rare events, they occurred throughout the Age of Sail. To explain the occurrence of this form of high-risk collective action, this article holds that shipboard grievances were the principal cause of mutiny. However, not all grievances are equal in this respect. We distinguish between structural grievances that flow from incumbency in a subordinate social position and incidental grievances that incumbents have no expectation of suffering. Based on a case- control analysis of incidents of mutiny compared with controls drawn from a unique database of Royal Navy voyages from 1740 to 1820, in addition to a wealth of qualitative evidence, we find that mutiny was most likely to occur when structural grievances were combined with incidental ones. This finding has implications for understanding the causes of rebellion and the attainment of legitimate social order more generally. The post incumbent will be responsible to the Continuing Airworthiness Manager (CAM) for the co- ordination of airworthiness activities and information for both the Merlin HC3/3A and Sea King HC4 Forces, to ensure that the CAM’s Military Aviation Authority (MAA) responsibilities are satisfied. This function shall include ensuring that the standard and presentation of Continuing Airworthiness Engineering (CAE) information is compliant with the MAA Regulatory Publications (MRP) and especially the CAE 4000 series Regulatory Articles.
