Drawing from an embodied ethnographic account of the everyday lives of five coffee shops that fit into the lower status ‘tinted cafes’ where sexual labor is common, this thesis examines sex workers’ experiences at the intersection of class, racial, and gender hierarchies. From an intersectional perspective, my study examines how inequalities based on class, gender, race, nationality, and body capital are reproduced and contested by sex workers. Based on the multiple facets of the precariousness marking sex workers’ experiences, beyond socioeconomic marginalization, it asks; how are inequalities reproduced through women’s embodied labor? How do women negotiate inequalities and exclusion? In intertextuality with the literature on sexualized and emotional labor in the global South, this thesis explores sex work as a service that embodies gendered, transnational social structures, but also as a practice that represents sex workers’ resourcefulness and resilience. Moving away from conceptualizations of sexual labor as a totalizing patriarchal oppression per se, it conceives sexual labor as situated and operating relationally with other forms of exclusion. Interweaving an ethnographic narrative with a theoretical and a historical iv contextualization, Precarious empowerments reveals how differences in terms of class, gender, race, and nationality are integral to the daily practices and the consumption of sexual services in ‘tinted’ coffee shops. Women’s empowerment gains value when seen in opposition to hegemonic power relations and the social and symbolic dimensions of the precarity marking working-class women’s lives. Sex workers’ narratives point to the strategies, arrangements, and resources they rely on to improve their socioeconomic status, how they face stigma, and the tactics used to navigate a context simultaneously marked by precariousness and condemning the work they perform. Understanding how sex workers experience this precarity, due to the criminalization and the stigmatization of their labor, highlights the need for a radical transformation in how sex work is signified and addressed by the Chilean state and society. v ACKNOWLEDGMENTS - For Eduardo, who passed away too soon but yet found mysterious ways to help me with this research I want to express my gratitude to everyone who has supported my academic pursuits throughout the years, helping me become the scholar I am today. Her Research Seminar in Urban Sociology challenged my thinking about urban processes, inspired my research, informed my media work, and motivated me to pursue a Ph.D. to strengthen my theoretical grounds. I am grateful to Sharon’s support and advice despite my research’s central focus drifting away from her main research interests and for challenging me to think more deeply about ‘the urban.’ I applied to the Graduate Center promising to continue developing research in Urban Sociology, but two significant events brought me off-track. One was a life-changing bicycle accident that turned the beginning of graduate school into a simultaneous recovery process, inviting me to reflect on the experience of disability and healing. Additionally, Victoria Pitts- Taylor’s Contemporary Theory class radically impacted the course of my research, as it expanded my interests in new directions. Without forgetting my Marxist legacy, I fell in love with feminist theories of the body, feminist epistemologies and metaphysics, and gender and sexuality theories. Feminist works inspired me to bring my personal world into my research as I vi disentangled this new body of theory. I am grateful to Victoria for inspiring this shift in my work, supporting my project, and her assertive advice throughout this process. Seeking for an advisor who could help me understand the Chilean context, I met Carolina Bank Muñoz later in my graduate student life, following fellow students’ recommendations. She soon became fundamental support in the development of this dissertation. In the increasingly global economy, the movement of people and capital around the world creates new segments of sex work, with diverse groups of consumers and providers. This dissertation examines the dialectical link between intimacy and political economy. I examine how changes in the global economy structure relations of intimacy between clients and sex workers; and how intimacy can be a vital form of currency that shapes economic and political relations. I trace new economies of sex and intimacy in Vietnam by moving from daily worlds of sex work in Ho Chi Minh City [HCMC] to incorporate a more structural and historical analysis. Drawing on 15 months of ethnography (2009-2010) working as a bartender and hostess I analyze four different bars that cater to wealthy local Vietnamese men and their Asian business partners, overseas Vietnamese men living in the diaspora, Western expatriates, and Western budget travelers.

Y también han planteado preguntas en el ámbito de la investigación en comunicación, especialmente el movimiento estudiantil (MECh). Emerge con intensidad en el otoño del 2011 (aunque tiene antecedentes en la revolución Revolución Pingüina del 2006), fue protagonizada por sujetos nacidos en el umbral de los procesos de digitalización y, en términos más amplios, crecieron tanto en espacios públicos y privados colonizados por la comunicación mediada como en los albores de la recuperación democrática luego de la dictadura (1973-1990). Ya a comienzos de la segunda década de este siglo desplegaron no sólo demandas de cambios estructurales al sistema educativo ampliamente apoyadas por la ciudadanía llegando a un 80% de apoyo, sino que lo han hecho de modos originales, creativos, lúdicos y recurrentes en el tiempo lo que se ha traducido en un poblamiento simbólico de nuevas gramáticas narrativas y soportes que dan cuenta de una generación autónoma en sus prácticas comunicativas, tanto en nuestro caso como en otros movimientos sociales (medioambientales minorías sexuales, defensa de los animales, entre otros) como en su propia vida cotidiana. Sin embargo, el asombro y entusiasmo ciudadano de los jóvenes no solo quedo en las marchas, calles y en las plataformas digitales, también han logrado marcar la agenda política chilena e incluso definir los ejes del nuevo gobierno (Bachelet 2014-2018).

    Sex and the city: Branding, gender and the commodification of sex consumption in contemporary retailing Martin, A. and Crewe, L. (2016) Urban Studies Abstract This paper explores the changing spatiality of the sex retail industry in England and Wales, from highly regulated male orientated sex shops, pushed to the legislative margins of the city and social respectability, towards the emergence of unregulated female orientated ‘erotic boutiques’ located visibly in city centres. This is achieved through an exploration of the oppositional binaries of perceptions of sex shops as dark, dirty, male orientated, and ‘seedy’ and erotic boutiques as light, female orientated and stylish, showing how such discourses are embedded in the physical space, design and marketing of the stores and the products sold within them. More specifically, the paper analyses how female orientated sex stores utilise light, colour and design to create an ‘upscaling’ of sexual consumerism and reflects on what the emergence of up-scale female spaces for sexual consumption in the central city might mean in terms of theorisations of the intersectionality between agency, power, gender and class. The paper thus considers how the shifting packaging and presentation of sex-product consumption in the contemporary city alters both its acceptability and visibility.     Recommendations for the sex industry As at 12/05/2021 Recommendations for the sex industry These recommendations are for people working in the sex industry and their clients. The general regulations that apply to the population on how to protect themselves and others from a SARS-CoV-2 infection must be observed (https://www.sozialministerium.at/Infor- mationen-zum-Coronavirus.html). Information and communication • If you have any questions regarding the coronavirus, the AGES Hotline can be con- tacted 24 hours a day on 0800 555 621. Information is also available in English at www.sozialministerium.at/en.html. • If a person is suspected of being ill (e.g. high temperature, coughing, shortness of breath, breathing difficulties), they should stay at home and dial the healthcare num- ber 1450 for advice on what to do next (diagnostic questioning). The healthcare num- ber can be called 24 hours a day. • The operator or owner of the brothel establishment (e.g. club, studio, brothel, etc.), in which the services are provided, must draw up and implement a COVID-19 prevention concept for the various areas of the establishment. In addition to this, a COVID-19 rep- resentative must be appointed. • The operator must ensure that clients only enter the establishment between 5:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. • If food and drinks are served within the brothel, the rules for gastronomy apply. • In places where sex work is performed, it is recommended that information leaflets for sex workers and clients translated into many languages are visibly displayed and made available for distribution.
