2018 Summer Reading

Dear Parents and Students,

Independent reading is a crucial skill that our students must work on over the summer. Reading not only increases vocabulary and expands our knowledge of the world, but it also reinforces language acquisition skills and promotes fo- cused and concentrated industry. As a community of readers, we also know that reading can offer hours of entertainment and enjoyment. Sometimes all it takes is just the right book to turn someone into an avid reader, and we hope that book is somewhere on this list.

This year, the English Department has created a required summer reading assignment for all students, new and returning, to encourage and reinforce the idea of Saint James School as a community of readers. This common experience, and these shared stories, will hopefully create lively and new conversations, friendships, and classroom discussions in our early opening fall days together. The English Department’s required summer reading list is available at:

www.mbsdirect.net

Simply search for “Saint James School – Maryland” (you may also just search for “Saint James” – then click “Saint James School – Maryland” from the choices offered) and then go “Menu.” Click “Order Your Materials.” Go to “Summer Reading” and scroll down to find the appropriate class in which you are enrolled. Put a checkmark next to the course and then click “View Your Materials.” You will see several purchase options, depending on the title of the book. Check your course selections in Blackbaud to make sure you are ordering the right material. Books for the regular school year will be available on MBS beginning July 2.

I want this reading list to have good variety and a sense of personality. The faculty give something of themselves to this project by including their favorite authors and titles along with the recommended books from the various titles for college preparatory students. While there are plenty of other titles and authors from which we could choose, I think we have chosen wisely and well in both fiction and non-fiction this year.

With the encouragement of parents, we would like our students to pursue independent summer reading. In addition to the required titles in MBS, please select any two books from the lists below. Using the provided lists as a guide, visit your local libraries and bookstores with our recommended booklist in hand. Explore the list, read the book covers, do some research, talk to other readers; take the time to be an active participant in your education. There is something for everyone on our lists, and we hope you enjoy discovering the pleasure of a good story. Have a good and safe summer vacation. We look forward to seeing you this coming fall.
