The Enlightenment Movement and Cultural Revival In
THE ENLIGHTENMENT MOVEMENT AND CULTURAL REVIVAL IN AZERBAIJAN IN THE LATE 19TH CENTURY By Turkay Gasimova Submitted to Central European University Department of History In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Supervisor: Professor Alfred J. Rieber Second Reader: Professor Karl Hall CEU eTD Collection Budapest, Hungary 2016 Copyright in the text of this thesis rests with the Author. CEU eTD Collection i Abstract In this thesis I focus on the late 19th century Azerbaijani history from the perspective of intellectual history. I mainly talk about the Enlightenment Movement with an emphasize on the intellectual debates on Religion and Secularism. Intellectual influences of the newly emerged intelligentsia with a special focus on cultural and intellectual life in Baku is also one of the main focal points of the presented work. My main argument in the thesis is that, without cultural and intellectual revival of late 19th century, which became possible with Baku oil boom, establishing the first Democratic Republic in Muslim world in 1918 wouldn’t be possible. I start with Baku Oil Boom of 1870s and continue with the establishment of the first Azerbaijani newspaper, “Akinchi” and then after examining the main intellectual debates, I conclude the thesis with the two most influential Azerbaijani intellectuals of the late 19th century. -
The Impact of Geopolitics and Balance of Power in the Caspian Sea: Russia and Its Return to the Past Policy
Journal of Central Eurasia Studies, Faculty of Law and Political Science, Vol. 12, No. 1, Spring & Summer 2019 1 The Impact of Geopolitics and Balance of Power in the Caspian Sea: Russia and its Return to the Past Policy Ali Akbar Jafari* Associate Professor of International Relations, Mazandaran University Dayyan Jaanbaaz PhD in International Relations, University of Tehran (Date received: Nov. 21. 2016 - Date approved: Sep. 5. 2017) Abstract After the Soviet Union collapse, the geopolitics of the Caspian Sea region was at the center of competition between coastal, regional and trans-regional powers. In the past two decades, due to the geopolitical realities of the region including (the Caspian sea legal regime, the geopolitical position of the Caspian Sea at the center of the geopolitical scopes of the Caucasus and Central Asia, the affiliations of regional and trans-regional powers in the Caspian, the type of behavioral patterns of the Caspian sea littoral states in political and economic relations with each other and transnational states and finally all types of geopolitics governing the region) this place has played the role of Eurasia’s new Heartland. In this connection, the geographical features of each country in the Caspian Sea have a special place for it. Russia is one of those countries which on the one hand, try to expand and maintain its former interests in this region by trying to expand its influence in the newly independent states and control the rise and expansion of American power in the region, on the other. Therefore, the research main question is that what kind of impacts the geopolitical features of the Caspian region have had on Russia’s attempt to return to its past imperial policies? In response to this question, the assumption of the research is that Russia has been struggling to remain the most powerful actor in the region through dynamic economy, political, security and environmental components of the Caspian Sea in an effort to remain the most powerful country of the region. -

Haji Zeynalabdin Taghiyev Community Leader That Made Impact on Social and Economic Development of the Country
Haji Zeynalabdin Taghiyev Community leader that made impact on social and economic development of the country Zeynalabdin, as all those who knew him as a little boy called him, was born on 25 September 1823 in Baku in a family of a shoemaker. Despite his disadvantaged and humble beginning, Zeynalabdin was destined to make history in Azerbaijan as one of the most established oil tycoons and philanthropists who later became the eminent Haji Zeynalabdin Taghiyev. Zeynalabdin started working at the age of 10, first as the trainee of a brick-mason, later as a mason at the age of 15 and then progressed to become a master builder. Meanwhile, Baku was experiencing the first oil boom. It was this period, in 1873, that he decided to lease land in Bibi Heybat along with two partners. They hired laborers and artisans, bought equipment, built a rig derrick and started boring wells in the hopes of producing oil. Their expenses grew by the day, but there was not even a trace of oil. Finally, his partners decided to sell their shares out losing all hope. Haji repaid their shares and became the sole property owner. One could envy his tenacity, as he continued to bore holes. And at long last, oil gushed at one of the four wells. Thus, the son of a poor shoemaker became the millionaire Taghiyev. As he became rich, the first thing Taghiyev did was to construct a motorway from the city to his production field in Bibi Heybat and later extended it to reach the Bibi Heybat mosque. -

Civic Education in Azerbaijan Naila Ismayilova, Baku (Azerbaijan
Civic Education in Azerbaijan Naila Ismayilova, Baku (Azerbaijan) According to Article 42 of the Constitution of the Republic of Azerbaijan, citizens of the country have the right to education. The right to education implies not only a free compulsory general secondary education, but it also includes the right to creativity, acquisition of new knowledge and improvement of professional skills in various fields. The right to education is a social right in itself, and for this reason its provision is a basic state duty. This right increases the welfare of every citizen, their social protection and ensures an adequate standard of living. Thus, in accordance with part two of Article 15 of the Constitution, the Republic of Azerbaijan supports the development of culture, education, health, science, art, protects the environment of the country, historical, material and moral heritage of the people. However, the concept of “civic education” is not included in the legislation of Azerbaijan. The concepts of “informal education” and “non-formal education” can be referred to the close concept of “civil education” in the law of the Republic of Azerbaijan “On Education” adopted in 2009. The law stipulates that “informal education” is the acquisition of knowledge through self-education, and “non-formal education” is education obtained through courses, seminars and individual classes without the accompaniment of a state certificate of education. However, the civic education has deep roots in Azerbaijan. The first secular school for girls in the Muslim East was opened in Baku 114 years ago. The initiative to create the educational institution, as well as its financial support belonged to Hajji Zeynalabdin Taghiyev, a well- known benefactor. -

The history of the Baku oil industry offers a clear, focused example of the social and physical effects of the imposition of external parties’ financial and commodity demands on an urban-industrial setting. Baku as an urban environment, comprising not just the physical elements of the city but also its sociocultural communities, has embodied priorities imposed on the oil industry that have shifted as the global importance of oil and natural gas has grown, as those commodities’ uses have changed over time, and according to successive regimes’ respective political and economic ideologies.
