Sabarmati River originates from Aravalli hills near village Tepur in Udaipur district of Rajasthan, the biggest state in India is well known for its Rajasthan and flows for 371 km before finally merging diverse topography. The state of Rajasthan can be divided with the Arabian Sea. Thus the Basin of Sabarmati River into the following geographical regions viz.: western and encompasses states of Rajasthan and Gujarat covering north western region, well known for the Thar Desert; the an area of 21,674 Sq.km between 70°58’ to 73°51’ East eastern region famous for the Aravalli hills, whereas, the longitudes and 22°15’ to 24°47’ North latitudes. The southern part of the state with its stony landscape offers Vatrak stream basin is circumscribed by Aravalli hills typical sites for water resource development where most on the north and north-east, Rann of Kachchh on the of the man-made reservoirs are present. Mahi River basin west and Gulf of Khambhat on the south. -

I don't know about all of you but that works for me. As we approach the fall we have a lot of things coming up. This month we have a very interesting talk on fresh water crabs. In the months to come we have a talk about what goes on at a National Guppy Convention and we are still looking at bringing in a speaker from a national fish food company along with working on the logistics for another Market Night. As with most of our events we do need members participation and help. At the meeting this Friday we will be asking for support for the auction. Our last auction was tremendous with all the help. Lets keep it going so everyone can enjoy the event. Amazon Alive! A decade of discovery 1999-2009 The Amazon is the planet’s largest rainforest and river basin. It supports countless thousands of species, as well as 30 million people. © Brent Stirton / Getty Images / WWF-UK © Brent Stirton / Getty Images The Amazon is the largest rainforest on Earth. It’s famed for its unrivalled biological diversity, with wildlife that includes jaguars, river dolphins, manatees, giant otters, capybaras, harpy eagles, anacondas and piranhas. The many unique habitats in this globally significant region conceal a wealth of hidden species, which scientists continue to discover at an incredible rate. Between 1999 and 2009, at least 1,200 new species of plants and vertebrates have been discovered in the Amazon biome (see page 6 for a map showing the extent of the region that this spans). The new species include 637 plants, 257 fish, 216 amphibians, 55 reptiles, 16 birds and 39 mammals. In addition, thousands of new invertebrate species have been uncovered. Owing to the sheer number of the latter, these are not covered in detail by this report. This report has tried to be comprehensive in its listing of new plants and vertebrates described from the Amazon biome in the last decade. But for the largest groups of life on Earth, such as invertebrates, such lists do not exist – so the number of new species presented here is no doubt an underestimate. To optimise crop yield, the cocoa trees require spraying with neonicotinoid insecticides (Imidacloprid, Thiacloprid Acetamiprid and Thiamethoxam). It is proposed that rainwater runoff from the treated area may pollute the Owena River and that these pesticides may thereby enter the human food chain via six species of fish (Clarias gariepinus, Clarias anguillaris, Sarotherodon galilaeus, Parachanna obscura, Oreochromis niloticus and Gymnarchus niloticus) which are cultured in the river mostly for local consumption. -

Roberts Research Associate, Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT. - Celestichthys margaritatus, a new genus and species of Danioinae, is described from a rapidly developing locality in the Salween basin about 70-80 km northeast of Inle Lake in northern Myanmar. Males and females are strikingly colouful. It is apparently most closely related to two danioins endemic to Inle, Microrasbora rubescens and "Microrasbora" erythromicron. The latter species may be congeneric with the new species. The new genus is identified as a danioin by specializations on its lower jaw and its numerous anal fin rays. The colouration, while highly distinctive, seems also to be characteristically danioin. The danioin notch (Roberts, 1986; Fang, 2003) is reduced or absent, but the danioin mandibular flap and bony knob (defined herein) are present. The anal fin has iiiSVz-lOV: rays. In addition to its distinctive body spots and barred fins the new fish is distinguished from other species of danioins by the following combination of characters: snout and mouth extremely short; premaxillary with an elongate and very slender ascending process; mandible foreshortened; body deep, with rounded dorsal and anal fins; modal vertebral count 15+16=31; caudal fin moderately rather than deeply forked; principal caudal fin rays 9/8; scales vertically ovoid; and pharyngeal teeth conical, in three rows KEY WORDS. - Hopong; principal caudal fin rays; danioin mandibular notch, knob, and pad; captive breeding.
