NHK WORLD TV to Exhibit at the EXPO, Europe’s Biggest Japan-related Event

TOKYO, June 25th 2013 – NHK will have its own booth to publicize NHK WORLD TV, host introductory Japanese pop culture events and show scenes of those events in program broadcasts at the , which takes place from July 4th-7th in , . NHK has had PR booth there for the past four years, but this will be the first ever link-up of PR activity to program broadcasts. The JAPAN EXPO, Europe’s largest festival of Japanese culture is held each summer in Paris, with its focus on cartoons, comics, music, fashion and other pop culture themes. The visitor numbers have kept on growing ever since its launch by young fans of Japanese culture in 1999 to turn it into a huge Japanese entertainment-themed event today. Last year’s guests included Kyary Pamyu Pamyu and Momoiro Clover Z and a record 220,000 visitors passed through the doors. The content will include demonstrations and talks by Japanese artists and fashion designers, karaoke etc. to present Japanese culture and publicize NHK WORLD TV through both events and programs. NHK WORLD TV will also have a booth at , an event which opens in London, UK on July 26th. This, too, will be linked to programs to bring Japan’s distinctive pop culture to the youth of Europe.

NHK WORLD TV’s booth will host special events with rising Japanese illustrator Chocomoo, known for her depictions of Harajuku trends, and fashion designer Miho Imoda, who will breathe new life into used clothing items brought by visitors. TOKYO FASHION EXPRESS will introduce these two popular artists, together with the latest fashion news from Harajuku, ahead of JAPAN EXPO 2013. The best moments of our events will be featured in another edition of TFE in September.

■imagine-nation -Popular Songs at JAPAN EXPO 2013- ●Wednesday, July 24t h 0:30-0:58, 4:30-4:58, 8:30-8:58. 12:30-12:58, 16:30-16:58, 20:30-20:58(JST) This program dissects Japan’s prominent , anime and video games through in‐depth reports and interviews with their creators. NHK WORLD TV’s booth will host an anime song karaoke contest for visitors, using a state‐of‐the‐art karaoke machine brought straight from Japan. The program will take a comprehensive look at Japanese pop culture centered on JAPAN EXPO 2013.

International -Kawaii in Tokyo & Paris- ●Sunday, July 28th 0:10-0:59, 4:10-4:59, 8:10-8:59, 12:10-12:59, 16:10-16:59, 20:10-10:59(JST) This program focuses on the latest kawaii trends through the people, items and events that shape this unique culture born in Japan. Masuda Sebastian, known as Kyary Pamyu Pamyu’s art director, designed this year’s NHK WORLD TV booth, where he will deliver a special talk on kawaii style. The booth will also host a demonstration on shironuri (“white makeup”) fashion, one of the latest trends to emerge from Harajuku, by prominent artist Minori. Both events will be featured in the program.

■J-MELO ● Broadcast in September Stay in the groove and keep up to date with all genres of music in Japan, ranging from pop and rock to jazz and classical. Singer‐songwriter and frequent program guest Kylee will be present at the NHK WORLD TV booth to give out autographs and interpret a few karaoke songs before her fans. Scenes from this event will be featured in the program. J‐MELO will also be broadcast on BS Premium (date to be decided).
