USE OF THE TERM “MATHDALI” IN A DEPED-PRODUCED VIDEO FOR GRADE 4 MATH

Dear Mr. Calma:

In line with the mandate of the Department of Education (DepEd) to provide quality education for all learners amidst the global pandemic, the Office of the Undersecretary for Administration (OUA) through the Information and Communications Technology Service (ICTS) implements the teacher-broadcaster program to capacitate public school teachers in writing video scripts for DepEd TV episodes.

In this regard, DepEd would like to extend its sincerest gratitude to Knowledge Channel Foundation, Inc. for providing an incident report on the use of the term “MathDali” in a Grade 4 Math episode for DepEd TV.

Please note that the Department highly respects the intellectual ownership of Knowledge Channel Foundation, Inc. to this term. Upon investigation, the ICTS discovered that Ma’am Marianne Lobrin, the Math 4 teacher-broadcaster in charge of the said episode, has no intention of copying the terminology in good faith. According to her, she did not know that there is a program titled “MathDali.” She used the terminology to address the learners as “MathDali buddies” in every segment for exercises.

As a response, the ICTS and production team managing different DepEd TV programs immediately removed the uploaded materials on YouTube. Further, the segments and episodes using the term “MathDali” will be reformatted to comply with the law and avoid causing harm to Knowledge Channel Foundation, Inc., considering its exceptional contribution in providing engaging and compelling video lessons to Filipino learners.

Re: The use of “MathDali” Title in DepEd produced video: Grade 4 Math Q2 Ep 15

Dr. Abram Abanil Director IV Office of the Director (ICTS-OD)

6 July 2021

Dear Dr. Abanil,

Greetings from Knowledge Channel Foundation!

First of all, we would like to express our gratitude and support for you and your team in helping bring Knowledge Channel video lessons to more learners and teachers as we continue our distance learning efforts during this pandemic. With Knowledge Channel and DepEdTV, Filipino children will have more options while learning at home using their TV sets or going online.

In the spirit of cooperative collaboration, we would like to kindly bring to your attention a specific concern sent to us by one of our viewers showing that the title of our show “MathDali” has been used in a video entitled, “Grade 4 Math Ep.15: Comparing and Arranging Decimal Numbers”. While we appreciate the work of the team involved in producing this video, we would like to ask your kind office to remind the DepEd TV and its team of teacher-broadcasters, writers and producers to refrain from using “MathDali” as title or subtitle of a show or segment of a show, or processes, solutions or activities, songs, dances, or other related works within a show or related to a show. Knowledge Channel Foundation owns the copyright to the title “MathDali” and the latter's related uses.

Attached is the incident report for your reference and letter of reminder to the creator of the video.

Thank you very much and we look forward to your immediate action on this concern.

Sincerely,

Edric C. Calma Director of Operations Knowledge Channel Foundation, Inc.
