FAQ Transition Process Magnussen School

1. What is the role of Magnussen School in transitioning your child from MS to a new school?

The role of Magnussen School is to provide suggestions and guidance to the family that will assist in their search to find a new school that will best accommodate the needs of the child to ensure success.

2. What is the role of the parents during the transition process?

The role of the parents is to find the best school for their child and to prepare their child to ensure that the transition to the new school is as seamless as possible. It is the responsibility of each parent to:

- be fully aware of your child’s academic strengths and weaknesses - be completely versed on your child’s IEP (individual education plan) if applicable - discuss with your child what they would like to see in their new school i.e. IB program, sports, the arts etc - see Parent Checklist below

3. What is expected of the student during their last year at Magnussen? o o Strive for high academic performance o Understand their learning style requirements Have a full understanding of their strengths and areas that they continue to o improve upon Prepare for entrance exams as required (standardized entrance exams, essays etc.)

4. Do most schools have a point person who we speak to about our child to determine if there is a ‘fit’ academically and socially?

Yes all schools will have someone you may speak to. The title of the point person at each school may vary. All schools will have a principal/headmaster position that may redirect you to the appropriate person/team. The principal/headmaster usually has the ultimate say in the student’s program. 5. If my child currently has an Individual Education Plan (IEP) will they have an IEP at the new school?

This is ultimately a decision of the parent’s and their child. However we strongly encouragehe only youinstances to discuss in which your an child’s IEP is IEP not with required us to areassist when: you in determining whether or not an IEP is the best decision for your child as they move forward. According to Ministry policy, t  The student with special needs requires little or no adaptations to materials, instruction or assessment methods; or

 The expected learning outcomes have not been modified; or  The student requires 25 or fewer hours of remedial instruction by someone other than the classroom teacher, in a school year.

A school board must ensure that the IEP is reviewed at least once each school year, and where necessary, is revised or cancelled.

6. Who is responsible for developing the IEP?

Magnussen is responsible for developing the IEP that is used while at Magnussen. It is the family’s responsibility to forward the IEP to the new school. It is the new school’s responsibility to create a new IEP.

7. Who is the point person on staff at Magnussen for the student, parents and future school to liaise with?

Mr. Roger Brunson, Principal and Mrs. Kristin Harbut, Director

8. Will this person be available for ongoing support if necessary once the student is attending the new school?

The administrators of Magnussen are always available to support the needs of their alumni.

9. How do you know what to look for to find the best school to suit your child’s needs? o o Know your child’s learning style o Choose a school that can support your child’s learning and social needs Discuss with your child what they are interested in learning besides the required academic subjects i.e. art, computers, languages, music, sports, etc.

10. When does the transition process begin?

The transition process begins in early September of the year prior to the actual transition from Magnussen.

11.
