Cinema in Dispute: Audiovisual Adventures of the Political Names ‘Worker’, ‘Factory’, ‘People’
Cinema In Dispute: Audiovisual Adventures of the Political Names ‘Worker’, ‘Factory’, ‘People’ Manuel Ramos Martínez Ph.D. Visual Cultures Goldsmiths College, University of London September 2013 1 I declare that all of the work presented in this thesis is my own. Manuel Ramos Martínez 2 Abstract Political names define the symbolic organisation of what is common and are therefore a potential site of contestation. It is with this field of possibility, and the role the moving image can play within it, that this dissertation is concerned. This thesis verifies that there is a transformative relation between the political name and the cinema. The cinema is an art with the capacity to intervene in the way we see and hear a name. On the other hand, a name operates politically from the moment it agitates a practice, in this case a certain cinema, into organising a better world. This research focuses on the audiovisual dynamism of the names ‘worker’, ‘factory’ and ‘people’ in contemporary cinemas. It is not the purpose of the argument to nostalgically maintain these old revolutionary names, rather to explore their efficacy as names-in-dispute, as names with which a present becomes something disputable. This thesis explores this dispute in the company of theorists and audiovisual artists committed to both emancipatory politics and experimentation. The philosophies of Jacques Rancière and Alain Badiou are of significance for this thesis since they break away from the semiotic model and its symptomatic readings in order to understand the name as a political gesture. Inspired by their affirmative politics, the analysis investigates cinematic practices troubled and stimulated by the names ‘worker’, ‘factory’, ‘people’: the work of Peter Watkins, Wang Bing, Harun Farocki, Danièle Huillet and Jean-Marie Straub. -

RADIOHEAD: THE GUITAR WEILDING, DANCING, SINGING COMMODITY by SELENA LAWSON Under the Direction of Jeffery Bennett ABSTRACT In 2007, Radiohead released a downloadable album, In Rainbows, allowing consumers to pay what they thought the album was worth. The band responded to a moment of change in the music industry. Since then, other bands, like Nine Inch Nails and Coldplay, have made similar moves. Radiohead's capability to release an album and let the fans decide its worth relied on the image they built, which foregrounded their commodification. The historic move redefined the boundaries between art and commodity, a well know tension in popular music studies. The thesis focuses on popular music as communication in the changing industry. Using Radiohead’s album as a case study, it looks at the changing boundaries in the tension between art and commodity. The thesis examines Radiohead's performance, its mediation by the press, and what the album’s distribution method meant to the fans. -
Visual Essays on the Music Video Archive of Kendrick Lamar
1 Visual Essays on the Music Video Archive of Kendrick Lamar Brace yourself, I’ll take you on a trip down memory lane. -Kendrick Lamar, m.A.A.d city Reid Cohen Advisor: Juli Grigsby Department: Anthropology April 20th 2018 2 Abstract: My thesis project is a pseudo-ethnographic approach to archiving and analyzing four music videos from rapper Kendrick Lamar’s work. Through my analysis, I combine anthropological theory with visual studies to better understand how sound and image work together to construct music videos. Music videos represent a unique site of interest for me because of the ways in which we, as lookers, produce forms of knowledge through our interpretations of visual media. In my work, I’ll be archiving the ways in which Kendrick’s locality, politics, and musical ability intersect between the image and music. In an effort to better understand the impacts of music videos on visual culture, this analysis will hopefully guide a discussion of how we, as viewers, learn to see things – and hopefully, we participate in a reflexive process of trying to define how we see ourselves and our own positions in the world in relation to each other. 3 Acknowledgements Thank you to my advisor and mentor Juli Grigsby for helping me find a way to research something that I’m passionate about. Thank you to Professor Zolani for your constant support and advice.
