Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

    Starting in 1989, Sinister was a band arising in the middle of the Death-Metal hype. Mike, André, Aad en Ron were joining forces and the Sinister sound was born. After releasing a demo, a promo tape followed. Sending out the promo to various labels resulted in signing up at Nuclear Blast Records, Germany 1991. Their debut CD 'Cross the Styx' saw the light in early 1992, and sold many copies worldwide. Many live shows all over Europe followed. Touring with bands like Suffocation, Cannibal Corpse and Deicide increased the number of people knowing Sinister. In the years after that, Sinister succeeded in maintaining their popularity by releasing their second and third album 'Diabolical Summoning' (1993) and 'Hate' (1995) and doing many live shows all over Europe and a very successful 55 show-tour through all the USA. At the end of this period, Death-Metal got less popular, lots of Death-Metal fans switched over to Black- Metal, Gothic and other atmospherically music. Sinister never thought about playing other music than their favorite; Death-Metal. Some years passed and the band released their mini-CD 'Bastard Saints' (1996), and played a few live-shows. Several line-up changes followed, and led Sinister to write their most aggressive brutal and intense album so far 'Aggressive Measures' (1998). These time their presence in Death-Metal paid off. Death-Metal is back, where for Sinister it never left. The response from fans and critics where good. Sinister sold lots of albums and played lots of good shows, of which a short US-tour and good festivals like Wacken open air, Milwaukee Metal fest and Czech Dynamo blessed their way.

    TRUTH CORRODED BIOGRAPHY 2018 Drums: Jake Sproule, Vocals: Jason North, Guitar: Trent Simpson, Bass: Greg Shaw, Lead Guitar: Chris Walden TRUTH CORRODED are an Australian band with a sound that captures elements of late 80's/early 90's inspired thrash and death metal, shaped by the likes of bands such as SLAYER, OBITUARY, SEPULTURA, KREATOR and EXHORDER, and then later influenced by acts such as MISERY INDEX, BEHEMOTH, NEUROSIS, DECAPITATED and REVOCATION. Taken together the influences have shaped a sound that is as confronting as the subject matter of the bands lyrics and pays homage to the go for the throat savagery of the bands roots. TRUTH CORRODED signed with leading US extreme metal label UNIQUE LEADER RECORDS which led to the release of the album titled 'Bloodlands' which was released in March 2019. Based on themes surrounding war and displacement, the album depicts the state of our times and the social and political impact that is having both in the bands home country Australia and abroad. The title refers to the growth of new conflict from conflicts past, with the suffering it creates spreading its roots. The album was recorded with session drummer Kevin Talley (SUFFOCATION, DYING FETUS, CHIMAIRA) – his third album with the band – and was mixed and mastered by renowned heavy music producer Chris 'ZEUSS' Harris (HATEBREED, SOULFLY, REVOCATION). The album also features guest appearances by Stephen Carpenter of DEFTONES, Terrance Hobbs of SUFFOCATION, Mark Kloeppel of MISERY INDEX and Ryan Knight, ex-THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER/ARSIS.     Lusty, “Rocking the Canon” LATCH, Vol. 6, 2013, pp. 101-138 ROCKING THE CANON: HEAVY METAL AND CLASSICAL LITERATURE By Heather L. Lusty University of Nevada, Las Vegas While metalheads around the world embrace the engaging storylines of their favorite songs, the influence of canonical literature on heavy metal musicians does not appear to have garnered much interest from the academic world. This essay considers a wide swath of canonical literature from the Bible through the Science Fiction/Fantasy trend of the 1960s and 70s and presents examples of ways in which musicians adapt historical events, myths, religious themes, and epics into their own contemporary art. I have constructed artificial categories under which to place various songs and albums, but many fit into (and may appear in) multiple categories. A few bands who heavily indulge in literary sources, like Rush and Styx, don’t quite make my own “heavy metal” category. Some bands that sit 101 Lusty, “Rocking the Canon” LATCH, Vol. 6, 2013, pp. 101-138 on the edge of rock/metal, like Scorpions and Buckcherry, do. Other examples, like Megadeth’s “Of Mice and Men,” Metallica’s “For Whom the Bell Tolls,” and Cradle of Filth’s “Nymphetamine” won’t feature at all, as the thematic inspiration is clear, but the textual connections tenuous.1 The categories constructed here are necessarily wide, but they allow for flexibility with the variety of approaches to literature and form. A segment devoted to the Bible as a source text has many pockets of variation not considered here (country music, Christian rock, Christian metal).

Damit wiederkäuen sie keineswegs Altbekanntes, sondern legen die Messlatte einmal mehr höher an als zuvor und stellen eindeutig klar, wer die Standards setzt, wenn es darum geht, zwingende Musik zu machen, die gleichzeitig brutal und komplex ist. Zudem treibt sich die Band immer wieder zu neuen Extremen an, um sicherzugehen, dass ihre jeweils neusten Songs aus ihrem bisherigen Katalog hervorragen. Auch dank der Produktion von Erik Rutan (Hate Eternal, Goatwhore) beweist ‘Red Before Black’, dass die Jungs keineswegs Altbekanntes wiederkäuen, sondern legen die Messlatte einmal mehr höher an als zuvor und stellen eindeutig klar, wer die Standards setzt, wenn es darum geht, zwingende Musik zu machen, die gleichzeitig brutal und komplex ist. Zudem hat sich die Band abermals angespornt, um sicherzugehen, dass die Scheibe aus ihrem bisherigen Katalog hervorsticht. "Im Laufe unserer Karriere versuchten wir immer, uns zu verbessern, sowohl in puncto Präzision beim Zusammenspielen, als auch auf produktionstechnischer Seite, ohne an Aggressivität einzubüßen. 'Red Before Black' setzt diese Tradition fort, ist aber vermutlich noch starker auf das Aggressive hin ausgerichtet. Präzise klingt das Album definitiv, zugleich aber auch so roh wie kaum etwas, das wir in jüngerer Zeit gemacht haben", findet Bassist Alex Webster. I've learned to growl and play the keyboard to their songs, searching for harmony by ear and up to now the albums they've released are on my phone's playlist what the people whose skins I tattoo can easily confirm, since I often have to explain why „he's screaming like that”. And no, I can't turn down the volume, listen, you don't have this at home. They usually calm down right after the entry of the female, classical vocals, which fantastically underscores a section's brutality, the sharp guitar riffs and „Jesus being raped” screams, as one of my tattooist colleagues called it, regularly forced to familiarize himself with this band when he shared a tattooing space with me. My musical fascinations, especially the vocal ones, eventually become drawings and paintings, so one night I sketched Dani, posted it on Instagram with the appropriate hashtags and some time later was very surprised to see a like and comment under the picture from Lindsay Schoolcraft, the new vocalist and person responsible for keyboards in Cradle of Filth. We talked for a while and when it turned out that the beautiful, talented and, most of all, humble Lindz confirms the online stereotype of a Candian citizen (meaning: super-nice; that's right, it appears all the memes are true:) ) I also drew her.
