FLYERS VS. RED WINGS This is the second meeting of the season between the clubs and the first of two Flyers visits to Detroit, with the next coming on March 20. It’s the Flyers’ first visit to the new Little Caesars Arena, the third Detroit venue in which they have played in their history. They were 8-17-5 in 30 games at the Olympia and were 14-20-5-0 in 39 regular season games at Joe Louis Arena.

According to the website Hockey-Reference.com, this is the 74th venue in which the Flyers have played a regular season game, including their three outdoor games. It’s just the third opponent they will have played in three different indoor venues considered the opponent’s regular “home” venue – the Flyers have played Tampa Bay at the Thunderdome, Expo Hall and Amalie Arena, and have played the Los Angeles Kings at the Great Western Forum, the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena, and STAPLES Center. The Flyers also played the Kings in a fourth venue, the Long Beach Convention Center, which only hosted two Kings games.

LAST MEETING Wednesday, December 20, 2017 – Flyers 4, Detroit 3 at Wells Fargo Center: Sean Couturier scored the game-winning goal 5:57 into the third period and the Flyers came out on top in a back-and-forth affair with Detroit. Dale Weise opened the scoring with 4:41 left in the first period, but Martin Frk tied it with just 1.3 seconds left in the frame and then Mike Green gave Detroit the lead 5:50 into the second, both on the power play. The Flyers tied it with a power play goal from Wayne Simmonds with 9:32 left in the second, which Detroit answered less than a minute later on a goal by Gustav Nyquist. Robert Hagg’s first NHL goal knotted the score again with 6:20 to play, and then Couturier won it when he put his own rebound past Jimmy Howard. Brian Elliott turned away 25 shots in the victory, while Howard stopped 27. Stars of the Game: 1 – Claude Giroux; 2 – Dylan Larkin; 3 – Robert Hagg.

NOTABLES

Claude Giroux posted a three-assist game and was 9-for-13 on faceoffs.

Robert Hagg scored his first NHL goal. He was also credited with four hits and two blocked shots.

Ivan Provorv led the Flyers with 23:36 of ice time. He had five shot attempts and blocked three Detroit shots.

Sean Couturier set a new career high at the time with his 16th goal of the season. He led the Flyers with six shots on goal and 11 total attempts.

NOTES OF THE NIGHT

The Flyers have won seven of their last eight and with their win on Sunday pulled back into a playoff position for the first time in over two months. They were last in following the league’s games on November 10, before wins by the Rangers and Islanders on Nov. 11 pushed them out of the second wild card spot.

On Dec. 4, the Flyers started a three-game Western Canada road trip with a win over Calgary, which started a six-game win streak. Since that date, the Flyers are 15-5-1 over 21 games for 31 points. They are outscoring opponents 67-53 in that timeframe, have scored three or more goals in 11 of those 15 wins, and 10 of the 15 have been by more than one goal. They have scored either one or two goals in all six of the losses, and in the remaining four wins.

The Flyers are 52.9 percent on faceoffs as a team this season, which is tops in the NHL. Claude Giroux, Sean Couturier and Valtteri Filppula were all in the league’s top 30.

Travis Konecny recorded his first career overtime game-winning goal and led the Flyers with four shots on goal. He is on a three-game scoring streak for the second time in his career. Konecny has 10 points (4G, 6A) and is a plus-4 in 12 games since being placed on the top line with Sean Couturier and Claude Giroux on Dec. 23.

Wayne Simmonds saw a six-game scoring streak come to an end on Saturday. It goes down as the Flyers’ second longest scoring streak this season behind only Claude Giroux’s seven-game streak from Dec. 16-29. Simmonds has five goals and three assists for eight points in his last 10 games. Three of his goals have come on the power play and one was shorthanded. In that timeframe Simmonds has scored his five goals on just 22 shots.

Sean Couturier scored his 26th goal of the season last Thursday, the overtime game-winner, and is now tied for fourth in the NHL in goals scored. It was his fifth GWG of the year, which set a new career high in the category. Couturier is already 11 goals past his previous career high for goals in a season; his goal Tuesday gave him more than his last two seasons combined (25). His 46 points are seven past his previous career high of 39. Couturier recorded three consecutive two-goal games last week, becoming the first Flyer to do that since Simmonds did in Dec. 2013. His plus-16 rating leads the team.

Claude Giroux was tabbed as the Flyers’ representative to the 2018 Honda NHL All-Star Weekend. It will be his fifth All-Star appearance. Giroux is the Flyers’ leading scorer on the season with 14 goals and 41 assists for 55 points, which ranked him fourth in the NHL in scoring.

Jake Voracek and Giroux were ranked 1-2, respectively, in assists across the entire league. Voracek leads the league with 45 assists while Giroux is tied for second with 41. Voracek is two points behind Giroux in the overall scoring race.

Robert Hagg leads the NHL with 162 hits. He leads all rookies in blocked shots with 64, and his TOI average of 18:49 is second among rookies. Hagg is a plus-13, which was tied for third-best among all rookies. The most recent Flyers rookie to finish a season at plus-13 or better was Sean Couturier, who was plus-18 in 2011-12.

During that time, Hakstol’s teams posted an overall record of 289-143-43 (.654). The Warburg, Alberta native led UND to the NCAA postseason in each of his 11 seasons, including seven appearances in the NCAA Frozen Four, most of any program in the country during that span. North Dakota won three regular-season conference titles under Hakstol (WCHA 2008-09 and 2010-11; NCHC 2014-15). He also led UND to four WCHA playoff titles (05-06, 09-10, 10-11 and 11-12).
