POSTGAME NOTES & QUOTES DALLAS STARS 2, COLORADO AVALANCHE 1 NOVEMBER 1, 2019 QUOTES Colorado C Nazem Kadri On The Avs’ Gaining Momentum After The Disallowed Goal: “Definitely, I think that was a turning point where we decided to start playing and from there on out, dominated the rest of the game. Like I said, their goaltender made a few nice saves and just a little too late.” On The Avs’ Homestand: “That’s just the rollercoaster of the season – you win a few, you lose a few. You know, it’s important not to get too consumed over wins and losses, just about how you are playing, so we just have to make a few corrections and we’ll be fine.” Colorado D Ian Cole On The Avs’ Performance: “Clearly not good enough. We took a little time off in the beginning of the game there and it showed. Picked it up in the later half of the game but they are a good team, you can’t spot a good team a lead like that.” On Tonight’s Goaltenders: “Grubi (Colorado G Philipp Grubauer) was really good for us, their goalie was fine. I think we needed to do a way better job of getting to him and getting some dangerous scoring chances.” Dallas D John Klingberg On Tonight’s Game: “I think maybe we were playing a little bit of a better team here. They got a lot of speed. We said we wanted to come out quick, we got out to a two-goal lead, and then we defended really good today. Goalie was really good as well, so it was a good road win.” On Getting A Win: “Yeah, for sure, it gains a lot of confidence. A little bit of a setback against Pittsburgh, but I think the last five games we’ve been playing pretty good. I mean, from mistakes you [can] learn as well. I think we talked about it before a meeting we had where we solved a lot of issues and cleared the air as well. We still have a lot of stuff we need to improve and that we’re going to work on, but it’s a good to come out with a win.” Dallas G Anton Khudobin On The Third Period: “Just tried to play our game. It would’ve been great to score, but he (Colorado G Philipp Grubauer) made a couple [great] saves. But we played our game and that’s it.” On Playing Aggressive: “We have to play like this. We have to. Yes, aggressive, forecheck, heat, be above the puck, everything. It’s just the way it is. I’m happy that we won, but there’s a lot of work ahead of us.”.

The Response Forms (questions and puzzles) check your understanding and apprecia- tion of the sport or physical activity. INTRODUCTION Ice hockey is a physically demanding sport that often seems brutal and violent from the spectator’s point of view. In fact, ice hockey is often referred to as a combination of blood, sweat and beauty. The game demands athletes who are in top physical condition and can maintain nonstop motion at high speed. HISTORY OF THE GAME Ice hockey originated in Canada in the 19th cen- tury. The first formal game was played in Kingston, Ontario in 1855. McGill University started playing ice hockey in the 1870s. W. L. Robertson, a student at McGill, wrote the first set of rules for ice hockey. Canada’s Governor General, Lord Stanley of Preston, offered a tro- phy to the winner of the 1893 ice hockey games. This was the origin of the now-famed Stanley Cup. Ice hockey was first played in the U. S. in 1893 at Johns Hopkins and Yale universities, respec- tively. The Boston Bruins was America’s first NHL hockey team. Ice hockey achieved Olym- pic Games status in 1922. Physical Education Learning Packets #23 Ice Hockey Text © 2006 The Advantage Press, Inc. • Turnbull Hockey Pool For
Turnbull Hockey Pool for Each year, Turnbull students participate in several fundraising initiatives, which we promote as a way to develop a sense of community, leadership and social responsibility within the students. Last year's grade 7 and 8 students put forth a great deal of effort campaigning friends and family members to join Turnbull's annual NHL hockey pool, raising a total of $1750 for a charity of their choice (the United Way). This year's group has decided to run the hockey pool for the benefit of Help Lesotho, an international development organization working in the AIDS-ravaged country of Lesotho in southern Africa. From www.helplesotho.org "Help Lesotho’s programs foster hope and motivation in those who are most in need: orphans, vulnerable children, at-risk youth and grandmothers. Our work targets root causes and community priorities, including literacy, youth leadership training, school twinning, child sponsorship and gender programming. Help Lesotho is an effective, sustainable organization that is working at the grass-roots level to support the next generation of leaders in Lesotho." Your participation in this year's NHL hockey pool is very much appreciated. We believe it will provide students and their friends and families an opportunity to have fun together while giving back to their community by raising awareness and funds for a great cause. • Peak Performance and Contract Inefficiency in the National Hockey League
PEAK PERFORMANCE AND CONTRACT INEFFICIENCY IN THE NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE A THESIS Presented to The Faculty of the Department of Economics and Business The Colorado College In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Bachelor of Arts By Scott Winkler April 2013 PEAK PERFORMANCE AND CONTRACT INEFFICIENCY IN THE NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE Scott Winkler April 2013 Economics Abstract The purpose of this study is to determine what age National Hockey League (NHL) players have their best seasons and how this relates to their contract earnings. The hypothesis is that NHL players have their peak performance at age 27, which indicates that long-term contracts that exceed this age create inefficiency. The study will examine player productivity by taking 30 NHL players and evaluating their performance in the years leading up to age 27 as well as years that follow. Performance measures include average point production and the highest average ice-time per game. The study will also use two OLS (Ordinary Least Squares) regressions where the dependent variables are average time on ice per game and capital hit, both good indicators of how valuable a player is to his team, as well as several statistical independent variables such as points, games played and most importantly age. By gaining knowledge of peak performance, NHL organizations could better manage their teams by limiting long-term contracts to players and as a result lessen the inefficiency that exists in the market.
