The South African College of Music, Founded 108 Years Ago, Offers World The South African College of Music, founded 108 years ago, offers world-class performances of African and Western music, jazz, opera and technology-inspired compositions on a weekly basis throughout the academic year on Tuesday evenings, with occasional concerts on other nights of the week. Please note the earlier starting time of 19H30, and that both our weekly daytime concerts start at 13h00. The South African College of Music reserves the right to alter programmes or replace soloists as may become necessary, but will endeavour to give notice of such changes via the mailing list, in the media and on various websites. Visit the SACM website: www.sacm.uct.ac.za BECOME A FRIEND OF THE COLLEGE Whilst every effort is made to keep ticket prices as low as possible, it is a huge benefit to join the Friends of the College. Friends of the College are offered 15 vouchers for R650.00. This works out to R43.33 per voucher, which will be issued to you at the beginning of the UCT concert year. These vouchers may be exchanged for tickets either at the door, or at Webtickets. Normal prices range from R70 to R100, and more for the opera collaborations. Members may then purchase more vouchers at the pro rata rate when they run out. Tickets are transferable, so your family and friends may attend concerts with you or even without you. This also makes them the perfect gift for someone who has everything! For more information, contact the Concert Co-ordinator, Gillian Lindner, on 021 650 2640. E-mail: [email protected]. OPERA WEDNESDAY 11 APRIL AT 19H30 FUNDRAISER BAXTER CONCERT HALL RISING STARS GALA CONCERT This fundraising concert features some of South Africa’s finest young opera singers – all in support of their friend - Lunga Eric Hallam. Lunga, a tenor from Khayelitsha, caught the eye of opera experts last year when he sang the role of Prince Ramiro in UCT’s production of La Cenerentola by Rossini, and then in Mendelssohn’s Elijah with the combined Symphony Choir and Philharmonia Choirs of Cape Town. Since then he was invited to audition for the University of Colorado where he was accepted into their opera programme to study his Masters in Music. In order to help raise the necessary funds to get there, Lunga has called on his friends to join him in an evening of their favourite opera arias and duets, and they will be accompanied by pianist José Dias. The singers include: Noluvuyiso Mpofu, Moloko Letsoalo, Ané Pretorius, Nkululeko Masuko, Martin Mkhize, Bongani Kubekha and Lunga’s twin brother, baritone Lungile Phillip Hallam.

  • Stellenbosch University Research Report 2004
STELLENBOSCH UNIVERSITY RESEARCH REPORT 2004 Editor: Senior Director: Research Stellenbosch University Stellenbosch 7602 ISBN 0-7972-1170-5 i FOREWORD The 2004 Research Report provides a comprehensive record of the University's research outputs. In addition to this overall survey of research at the institution, perspectives are provided on the performance of individual faculties and departments. Further statistical perspectives on research output and the nature of research activities are presented in other publications of the Division of Research Development, i.e. Research @ Stellenbosch; and Perspectives of Stellenbosch University. As in the past, a variety of persons and organizations contributed to the University's research programme. Stellenbosch University wishes to express particular recognition to the statutory research councils and commissions, government departments, private enterprises, foundations and individuals for their continued support of our research. As far as research funding is concerned, researchers at South African universities are increasingly dependent upon new sources for research funding. This includes national and international opportunities alike. Stellenbosch University therefore attaches great value to regional cooperation and substantive scientific agreements with other universities local and abroad, and to bilateral research and development agreements between South Africa and other countries. Apart from the active support of research by the University's management, a variety of internal support services provide assistance to researchers. These include the library and information services, capacity building workshops, information technology, infrastructure, the maintenance of laboratories and equipment, central analytical services, and support from the administrative and financial divisions, without which it would be impossible to conduct research of this calibre. We acknowledge with appreciation the dedication and excellent contributions made by Stellenbosch University staff members to the institution's research output.

  • Ricciardo E Zoraide and Adina from the 2018 Pesaro Festival
Rossini’s Ricciardo e Zoraide and Adina from the 2018 Pesaro Festival Charles Jernigan, August 20, 2018. 2018 is a Rossini anniversary year on several counts. It is the 150th anniversary of the composer's death in 1868, and that milestone is being celebrated all over Italy this year with numerous productions of his operas. It is also the 200th anniversary of the composition of three of his 39 operas--Mosè in Egitto, Ricciardo e Zoraide and Adina, and this year's Pesaro festival is dedicating two of its opera productions to two of those works. Ricciardo e Zoraide Between 1815 and 1823, Rossini focussed his operatic activity in Naples (with excursions to Rome, Venice and Milan to produce several other new works). The serious operas he created for Naples' San Carlo stage became the template for serious opera in Italy for some decades to come. The San Carlo was the most daring and professional house in Italy at the time, and Rossini was able to experiment and produce the ten serious works which came to be called the "jewels in his crown." It was an intensely creative period for him, presided over by his muse, lover and eventual wife, Isabella Colbran, who had the starring role in all of his Naples opera serias. According to most critics and scholars over the years, the fifth of those ten Naples opera serias, Ricciardo e Zoraide, was the least interesting and most conservative, and, in fact, its status is attested to by the paucity of modern revivals. Outside of two previous offerings at the ROF, modern productions have been very few indeed.
