  • Download Augustin Dumay Biography
Augustin Dumay International critics have compared Augustin Dumay to the great violinists of the 20th century, describing him as a “great classical stylist”, a reputation underscored by his outstanding recordings for Deutsche Grammophon: Beethoven’s complete sonatas with Maria João Pires, a set that “surely ranks with Grumiaux/Haskil, Menuhin/Kempff, or Perlman/Ashkenazy” (International Piano), Brahms’ trios in which “the Milstein legacy in Dumay’s playing is wonderfully apparent” (Gramophone), and Mozart’s concertos with the Camerata Salzburg, “without exaggeration one of the finest Mozart violin concerto discs ever made” (Classic CD), in which he “confirms that he is an exceptional interpreter of Mozart as were Stern or Grumiaux before him” (Classica). Born into a family of musicians – his mother is a cellist and pianist, his father an amateur violinist – Augustin Dumay started violin lessons at the age of 5, after attending a concert by Nathan Milstein. Aged ten, he entered the Paris Conservatoire, winning the premier prix at the age of thirteen. His first concert at the Théâtre des Champs- Élysée followed a year later and he then appeared at the Montreux Festival, playing for Joseph Szigeti and Henryk Szeryng, who invited him to replace him on a tour of South America. On his return, Augustin Dumay worked in Paris with Nathan Milstein, who said of him: “I believe he will take his place amongt the great violinists of the year 2000”. He then went on to work in Brussels with Arthur Grumiaux for five years. He soon became familiar to concert audiences in France, but his international career took off thanks to his encounter with Herbert von Karajan.

  • Stellenbosch University Research Report 2004
STELLENBOSCH UNIVERSITY RESEARCH REPORT 2004 Editor: Senior Director: Research Stellenbosch University Stellenbosch 7602 ISBN 0-7972-1170-5 i FOREWORD The 2004 Research Report provides a comprehensive record of the University's research outputs. In addition to this overall survey of research at the institution, perspectives are provided on the performance of individual faculties and departments. Further statistical perspectives on research output and the nature of research activities are presented in other publications of the Division of Research Development, i.e. Research @ Stellenbosch; and Perspectives of Stellenbosch University. As in the past, a variety of persons and organizations contributed to the University's research programme. Stellenbosch University wishes to express particular recognition to the statutory research councils and commissions, government departments, private enterprises, foundations and individuals for their continued support of our research. As far as research funding is concerned, researchers at South African universities are increasingly dependent upon new sources for research funding. This includes national and international opportunities alike. Stellenbosch University therefore attaches great value to regional cooperation and substantive scientific agreements with other universities local and abroad, and to bilateral research and development agreements between South Africa and other countries. Apart from the active support of research by the University's management, a variety of internal support services provide assistance to researchers. These include the library and information services, capacity building workshops, information technology, infrastructure, the maintenance of laboratories and equipment, central analytical services, and support from the administrative and financial divisions, without which it would be impossible to conduct research of this calibre. We acknowledge with appreciation the dedication and excellent contributions made by Stellenbosch University staff members to the institution's research output.

Zarzuela, a traditional form of Spanish musical theater, has been championed by the world’s great Hispanic opera singers, including Montserrat Caballé, Pilar Lorengar, Alfredo Kraus, and Teresa Berganza. The great tenor Plácido Domingo actually began his magnificent career singing zarzuela and has kept it in his repertory over the years. This Teatro Real production has been seen at Milan’s La Scala, Washington National Opera, and Los Angeles Opera, and we are proud to be able to present it to our Maestro Ramon Tebar and Bob Heuer South Florida audience. It promises to be a highlight of the season. The season will also include Florida Grand Opera’s first-ever production of Puccini’s La rondine, which has been enjoying renewed worldwide popularity, and truly remarkable artists in productions of Verdi’s Rigoletto and Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette. I hope you will join me in welcoming FGO’s new Music Director, Ramon Tebar, who will assume that role during the 2011-2012 season.
