DeCtl.ber 1974 i11 PREFACE This paper is divided into five more or less independent sec tions. The first eX&lll1nes the science fiction collections of ten Chicago area public libraries. The second is a brief crttical disOUBsion of science fiction, the third section exaaines the perforaance of SClltl of the standard lib:rary selection tools in the area.of'Ulcience fiction. The fourth section oona1ats of sketches of scae of the field's II&jor writers. The appendix provides a listing of award-w1nD1ng science fio tion titles, and a selective bibli-ography of modem science fiction. The selective bibliogmphy is the author's list, renecting his OIfn 1m000ledge of the field. That 1m000ledge is not encyclopedic. The intent of this paper is to provide a brief inU'oduction and a basic selection aid in the area of science fiction for the librarian who is not faailiar With the field. None of the sections of the paper are all-inclusive. The librarian wishing to explore soience fiction in greater depth should consult the critical works of Damon Knight and J&Iles Blish, he should also begin to read science fiction magazines. Please check our website for more options. 1.Adams, Richard. THE GIRL IN A SWING. London: Allen Lane, (1980.) Uncorrected proof. A very different novel by the author best known for 'Watership Down.' A love story with a steadily growing undertone of horror. It is ironical - in light of the fact that in the preface to this book, Adams says that he "cannot be sure of unraveling the experienced from the imagined" - that this novel was the subject of a libel suit, and the first printings were suppressed and the name of the main character - Kathe - was changed (this proof copy is, of course, the first state with the original name.) INSCRIBED by Adams on the first page "To - yours sincerely." 397 pp. Very good in printed blue covers - an uncommon advance issue. 57321 $125.00 2.Aiken, Joan. THE WOLVES OF WILLOUGHBY CHASE. London: Jonathan Cape, (1962) First printing. The fourth novel by this award winning writer, a masterful dark fantasy novel for older children, one which "takes place in 1832 - in a period of English history that never happened. Good King James III is on the throne and the country is ravaged by wolves which have migrated through the newly opened Channel Tunnel." Dust jacket art and illustrations by Pat Marriott.

  • Mar 30, 2012 Greg Bear BIOGRAPHY I Was Born in San Diego, California
Greg Bear (Bio-Bibliography) (1) Mar 30, 2012 Greg Bear BIOGRAPHY I was born in San Diego, California, on August 20th, 1951, to Wilma M. and Dale F. Bear. My father was in the navy, and by the time I was twelve years old, I had traveled with my parents to Japan, the Philippines and Alaska, as well as touring various parts of the United States. It was in Alaska, at age ten, that I completed my first short story. I had been writing for a year or so already. At age thirteen or fourteen I began submitting stories to the magazines, and at fifteen I sold my first short short to Robert Lowndes' FAMOUS SCIENCE FICTION. (It appeared when I was sixteen.) It took five years to sell my next story, but by the time I was twenty-three, I began selling regularly. In the late 1960s, a group of high school friends, myself, and local fans helped found San Diego Comic-Con. I served on the committee for a number of years. Today, Comic-Con is a totemic multimedia extravaganza drawing more than 120,000 attendees yearly. My first novel, finished when I was nineteen, was completely rewritten and sold to Berkley some thirteen years later; the first novel I sold (HEGIRA, Dell) appeared in 1979. By order of publication, my novels are HEGIRA, PSYCHLONE, BEYOND HEAVEN'S RIVER, STRENGTH OF STONES, THE INFINITY CONCERTO (Berkley, 1984), BLOOD MUSIC (Arbor), EON (Bluejay) (1985), THE FORGE OF GOD (Tor, 1986), THE SERPENT MAGE (Berkley, 1986), ETERNITY (Warner, 1988), QUEEN OF ANGELS (Warner, 1990).
