Paxos route (1 week) Saturday Arrival Nidri Nidri is the home of Sunny Sailing. The view of the water is magnificent. The jetty lies in front of the Armonia hotel where one can make use of the many facilities that the hotel has to offer. Nidri itself has a lively village with a pleasant boulevard. Sunday Nidri - Lefkas Stad The Lefkas Marina is within walking distance of the lively center, where there are many shops and terraces. Although it is a small town, there is a lot to see and do here. There is the fortress of Agia Mavra, there are historic churches, a beautiful lagoon, beautiful squares and colorful narrow alleys. Monday Lefkas Stad - Parga Near the harbor stretches the town itself, which looks like a beautiful white village with red roofs unaffected by the course of time. The character of the town is lively and you can enjoy the restaurants and shops and the evening of the sunset between the castle and the island of Panagia. Tuesday Parga - Lakka The bay of the harbor town of Lakka on Paxos is often full of sailing boats and yachts and is bowl-shaped. The seawater in the bay has the most beautiful colors of blue and partly because of the olive trees and cypresses that grow up to the coastline, it looks like a lake. The harbor town has a small pedestrian promenade with numerous terraces and a few very good restaurants. Wednesday Lakka - Mongonisi Mongonissi on the island of Paxos is located in a protected bay where the water is shallow and the beach is on the doorstep. A typic Greek taverna surrounded by olive trees offers delicious local dishes. Thursday Mongonisi - Preveza Departement Preveza is one of the four departments of Epirus. It is bordered to the north with the Epirotional departments of Thesprotia and Ioannina, in the east with the depart- ment of Arta. In the south there is the Gulf of Amvrakikos and in the west the Ionian Sea. It is a lively town with many shops, restaurants, squares and a cozy harbor. Friday Preveza - Nidri Back to the home base. Where you can refuel your own jetty before (unfortunately) the suitcases have to be packed. In the evening, the hotel can serve a deliciously BBQ on the other side of the street. Για την ανασύνθεση της ιστορίας της Κοινότητας της Πάργας κατ' αρχάς κρίθηκε σκόπιμο να μελετηθεί και να αποδελτιωθεί το έργο του Ludwig Salvator, Parga, die Seestadt im Epirus\ το οποίο εκδόθηκε στις αρχές του 20ού αιώνα. Στο έργο αυτό δημοσιεύεται αρχειακό υλικό, το οποίο απόκει ται κυρίως στο Αρχείο του νομού Κέρκυρας και μέχρι σήμερα έχει παραμεί νει ανεκμετάλλευτο. Επιπλέον, το γεγονός ότι δεν έχει σωθεί ο καταστατικός χάρτης της Κοινότητας κατέστησε αναγκαίο να μελετηθούν τα κείμενα των πρεσβειών, που η πόλη της Πάργας κατά καιρούς απέστειλε στην κεντρική βενετική διοίκηση, καθώς και στους ανώτερους βενετούς αξιωματούχους * Η παρούσα μελέτη υλοποιήθηκε στο πλαίσιο του υποέργου «Ελληνικές Κοινότητες και Ευρωπαϊκός Κόσμος (13ος-19ος αι.).

Chapter 10 Connectivity, Mobility, and Mediterranean “Portable Archaeology”: Pashas from the Dalmatian Hinterland as Cultural Mediators Gülru Necipoğlu Considering the mobility of persons and stones is one way to reflect upon how movable or portable seemingly stationary archaeological sites might be. Dalmatia, here viewed as a center of gravity between East and West, was cen- tral for the global vision of Ottoman imperial ambitions, which peaked during the 16th century. Constituting a fluid “border zone” caught between the fluctu- ating boundaries of three early modern empires—Ottoman, Venetian, and Austrian Habsburg—the Dalmatian coast of today’s Croatia and its hinterland occupied a vital position in the geopolitical imagination of the sultans. The Ottoman aspiration to reunite the fragmented former territories of the Roman Empire once again brought the eastern Adriatic littoral within the orbit of a tri-continental empire, comprising the interconnected arena of the Balkans, Crimea, Anatolia, Iraq, Syria, Egypt, and North Africa. It is important to pay particular attention to how sites can “travel” through texts, drawings, prints, objects, travelogues, and oral descriptions. To that list should be added “traveling” stones (spolia) and the subjective medium of memory, with its transformative powers, as vehicles for the transmission of architectural knowledge and visual culture. I refer to the memories of travelers, merchants, architects, and ambassadors who crossed borders, as well as to Ottoman pashas originating from Dalmatia and its hinterland, with their extraordinary mobility within the promotion system of a vast eastern Mediterranean empire. To these pashas, circulating from one provincial post to another was a prerequisite for eventually rising to the highest ranks of vizier and grand vizier at the Imperial Council in the capital Istanbul, also called Ḳosṭanṭiniyye (Constantinople).

I place Parga at the intersection of cultural, political, and historical discourses, and argue that this event is a prism to chart the major leading forces, tensions, and ideas that coalesced in the formation of Italian cultural nationalism, or Risorgimento - the movement that led to the unification of the peninsula in 1861. By extending the boundaries of the Italian national movement to another national cause and, by implication, to the larger European geo-political and geo-cultural space, I also shed light on the transnational aspects of 19th century Italian nationalist culture. In this study, I refer to the different branches of philhellenism in Europe and to the solidification of a hierarchy of European civilizations, which saw Southern Europe as a region impermeable to the progress and advances of Northern modernity and thus unsuited for political freedom and economic independence.

Volta 6, 56126 Pisa, Italy Addresses for other authors are given in the Supplement at www.int-res. com/ articles/suppl/ n036 p229 _ supp .pdf ABSTRACT: The available information regarding the 2 sea turtle species breeding in the Mediter- ranean (loggerhead turtle Caretta caretta and green turtle Chelonia mydas) is reviewed, including biometrics and morphology, identification of breeding and foraging areas, ecology and behaviour, abundance and trends, population structure and dynamics, anthropogenic threats and conserva- tion measures. Although a large body of knowledge has been generated, research efforts have been inconsistently allocated across geographic areas, species and topics. Significant gaps still exist, ranging from the most fundamental aspects, such as the distribution of major nesting sites and the total number of clutches laid annually in the region, to more specific topics like age at maturity, survival rates and behavioural ecology, especially for certain areas (e.g. south-eastern Mediterranean). These gaps are particularly marked for the green turtle. The recent positive trends of nest counts at some nesting sites may be the result of the cessation of past exploitation and decades of conservation measures on land, both in the form of national regulations and of con- tinued active protection of clutches.
