This was a Google Forms survey. The first Google Forms survey (n = 1176) was Survey 2017 about SBS. The earlier (non Google Forms) surveys were conducted in 2013: A study of 2044 viewers of SBS television on advertising, Charter, relevance and other matters (n = 2044); and 2008: One Minute Survey (n = 1733). In mid May 2018, 1249 people took part in this online Google Forms Programs on SBS survey 2018 . The survey was open nation-wide to anyone with internet access. Across all four surveys, four different cohorts totalling 6202 SBS viewers nationally have been surveyed in every State and Territory. The data collated here is conveyed in easy to read colour coded graphs. The survey asked questions in five categories: Program content; Program titles; SBS platforms; Competition; and Advertising. SaveOurSBS.org supporters & friends of SBS page 2 of 82 Key points Of the 1249 people who participated in the survey– Most thought SBS to be a valuable public service (range per SBS outlet/platform: 58% to 88%). Almost three-quarters (70%) said SBS currently has insufficient niche programming and 69% said the programs on SBS are now of the type expected on commercial broadcasters rather than a public broadcaster compared to more than 10 years ago.

This thesis contains no material which has been accepted for the award of any other degree or diploma in any university. Signed: Date: 15 January 2019 ABSTRACT Aboriginal Victorians have been rendered as an ‘invisible presence’ by the various discourses of race and culture that emerged in 19th-century forms of colonialism, which remain influential today. This thesis demonstrates how (white) belonging is constructed within national narratives by drawing on case study analyses of contemporary Victoria’s central and western goldfields districts, and of Aboriginal Victorian participation in Australian (Rules) Football. Semi-structured interviews were conducted across two case studies, with 28 Aboriginal participants and four non- Aboriginal participants. Interviews were analysed using a grounded theory framework, which prioritises culturally respectful and transparent research by positioning the research around participant testimony rather than the 19th-century colonial research conventions that are still influential and popular today. Working within critical theory, this thesis draws on race and settler colonialism to position the invisible presence of Aboriginal people within the ‘(white) settler colonial psyche’. A central feature of the (white) settler colonial psyche is the maintenance of settler sovereignty, as imagined through (white) belonging.

    National Indigenous TV Limited (NITV) Submission to the Senate Environment, Communications, and the Arts Committee Broadcasting Legislation Amendment (Digital Television) Bill 2010 1. Introduction This Bill alters the delivery of free to air television services in the regional and remote areas of Australia in fundamental ways. Perhaps the Bill represents the biggest change in regional television since equalisation occurred in the late 1980s. Equalisation was the name given to the policy which attempted to replicate, in regional areas, the range of free to air TV services available in the 5 metropolitan TV markets. In the remote areas the changes enunciated by the Bill create the biggest changes since direct to home (DTH) digital free to air TV satellite broadcasts began on the Aurora platform in 1997 (replacing the previous analog BMAC DTH free to air satellite services). Despite this scale of change, the Bill before the Parliament is largely a construct developed by regional and remote commercial TV free to air broadcasters, DBCDE and the government. It has not derived from an open consultative process. The Bill has not been guided in any way by the promised Discussion Paper and the range of community and other broadcaster views and ideas such an open process would have engendered. As can be expected, given this gestation, the Bill may well cover the appropriate and understandable interests of regional and remote commercial free to air TV broadcasters and to a lesser extent the two National broadcasters, but it leaves virtually all questions relating to other free to air broadcasters and significant consumer issues up in the air.

    ABC responses to Questions on Notice ‘Inquiry into Recent ABC Programming Decisions’ Written Questions on Notice Senator Xenophon 1. How many staff members – within ABC TV production, Production Resources and Technical Services – are being cut nationwide by the ABC as a result of the TV redundancies which were revealed in the August 2 announcement? Answer: Total redundancy figures are not yet available. Negotiations on redundancies are ongoing. 2. Are any management positions being cut or is it just program makers and resource staff? Answer: See above. 3. When the ABC had a single TV channel (Channel 2), how many managers did the channel have and what were their combined salaries? Answer: The ABC has been unable to collate this information in the time available. 4. Since the transition from one to four ABC channels, how many managers are now employed by ABC TV and what is their combined salary? Answer: The ABC engaged 50 managers across genre management, commissioning and senior financial management pre April 2005 (prior to the launch of ABC 2) at a cost of $6.09m. As at June 30 this number now totals 55 staff at a cost of $8.4m. 1 5. In 2006 Mr Dalton addressed the national conference of SPAA. In that speech he said: In the area of factual production as a result of one of our genre heads leaving we have taken the opportunity of clearly and structurally delineating between internal and external production. Part of these changes will mean that in the longer term, outside of its weekly magazine or program strands, ABC TV will move out of internal factual and documentary production.

    CREATIVE LEARNING RESOURCE NOONGAR STORYTELLING FOR PRIMARY SCHOOLS A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR KYLIE BRACKNELL [KAARLJILBA KAARDN] ... It was important to me, as director of these films, that boodjar (the land and/or landscape) be a primary focus in the framing of these stories. That is why they are so deliberately and beautifully set in these locations. Country keeps us grounded, and these stories are grounded in Country. NOONGAR LANGUAGE AND CULTURE GENERAL TERMS These are to help students understand some of the important terms in Aboriginal culture and give a wider context for the films. NOONGAR A person from the South West of Western Australia (also spelled Nyungar) ELDERS Highly important and respected people, chosen by their communities to be the keepers of knowledge and pass that on to the young people of their community. KAADIDJINY Understandings, including those passed down through the generations and carried forward into the future. COUNTRY Aboriginal people use the term ‘Country’ with a capital letter to refer to the land, waters, skies and everything in them, including their extended family. They have a spiritual and physical connection to this land. NYIDINY In the Noongar language, nyidiny is the cold times of creation. In English, this is roughly translated as ‘dreamtime’ or ‘the dreaming’ and generally refers to Aboriginal creation stories which continue to give meaning to all things. Aboriginal groups in different parts of Australia talk about these kinds of stories in different ways. Across the Noongar region, giant snake ancestors known as waagkal and maadjit are associated with the creation and maintenance of waterways and landscapes.
