ZooKeys 604: 13–30. doi: 10.3897/zookeys.604.8976 Abstract The Atlantidae (shelled heteropods) is a family of microscopic aragonite shelled holoplanktonic gastro- pods with a wide biogeographical distribution in tropical, sub-tropical and temperate waters. The arago- nite shell and surface ocean habitat of the atlantids makes them particularly susceptible to ocean acidifica- tion and ocean warming, and atlantids are likely to be useful indicators of these changes. However, we still lack fundamental information on their taxonomy and biogeography, which is essential for monitoring the effects of a changing ocean.

Biodiversity Journal , 2018, 9 (1): 25–34 Mollusc diversity in Capo d’Armi (Central Mediterranean Sea) subtidal cliff: a first, tardy, report Salvatore Giacobbe 1 & Walter Renda 2 ¹Department of Chemical, Biological, Pharmaceutical and Environmental Sciences, University of Messina, Viale F. Stagno d’Al - contres 31, 98166 Messina, Italy; e-mail: [email protected] 2Via Bologna, 18/A, 87032 Amantea, Cosenza, Italy; e-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT First quantitative data on mollusc assemblages from the Capo d’Armi cliff, at the south en - trance of the Strait of Messina, provided a baseline for monitoring changes in benthic biod- iversity of a crucial Mediterranean area, whose depletion might already be advanced. A total of 133 benthic taxa have been recorded, and their distribution evaluated according to depth and seasonality. Bathymetric distribution showed scanty differences between the 4-6 meters and 12-16 meters depth levels, sharing all the 22 most abundant species. Season markedly affected species composition, since 42 taxa were exclusively recorded in spring and 35 in autumn, contrary to 56 shared taxa. The occurrence of some uncommon taxa has also been discussed. The benthic mollusc assemblages, although sampled in Ionian Sea, showed a clear western species composition, in accordance with literature placing east of the Strait the bound- ary line between western and eastern Mediterranean eco-regions. Opposite, occasional records of six mesopelagic species, which included the first record for this area of Atlanta helicinoi - dea

They are part of the class Gastropoda and located in the order Ophistobranchia. The pteropods are divided into the orders Thecosomata and Gymnosomata. They are small to medium sized animals, ranging from little more than 1mm for example in many members of the Genus Limacina to larger species such as Cymbulia peroni, which reaches a pseudoconch length of 65mm. The mostly shell bearing Thecosomata are known from about 74 recent species worldwide and are divided into five families. The Limacinidae are small gastropods with a sinistrally coiled shell; they can completely retract their body into the shell. Seven recent species of the genus Limacina are known. The Cavoliniidae is the largest of the thecosomate families with about 47 species with quite unusually formed shells.

BASTERIA, 64: 151-163, 2000 The genus Alzoniella Giusti & Bodon, 1984, in France. 1 West European Hydrobiidae, 9 (Gastropoda, Prosobranchia) Hans+D. Boeters Karneidstrasse 8, D 81545 Munchen, Germany In France the genusAlzoniella Giusti & Bodon, 1984, is represented with two subgenera, viz. its nominate subgenus and Navarriella subgen. nov. The nominate subgenus comprises six three species, ofwhich are described as viz. A. haicabia A. new, (A.) spec. nov., (A.) junqua spec. A. nov. and A. (A.) provincialis spec. nov., next to (A.) navarrensis Boeters, 1999, A. (A.) perrisii and A. (Dupuy, 1851) (A.) pyrenaica (Boeters, 1983). The new subgenus is proposed for A. (Navarriella) elliptica (Paladilhe, 1874) only. A. (A.) perrisii (Dupuy, 1851) [Hydrobia], the first of this became known from is redefined and species genus that France, described here with two viz. A. and A. subspecies, (A.) p. perrisii (A.) p. irubensis subspec. nov. Key words: Gastropoda, Prosobranchia, Hydrobiidae, Alzoniella (Alzoniella) and Alzoniella (Navarriella), France. INTRODUCTION Giusti & Bodon (1984: 169) described Alzoniella for three eyeless, subterranean, hy- drobiid species from Italy, that might have evolved from small populations that locally survived the Quaternary glaciations. It turned out that Alzoniella is also represented in where mountain inhabited France, regions are that have partially been subject to gla- ciations, viz. the Pyrenees and the MediterraneanAlps. In these regions too, populations ofancestral have Alzoniella might survived locally by invading subterranean waters. This development apparently went less far than in for example Bythiospeum Bourguignat, 1882, andMoitessieria Bourguignat, 1863. Species of these two genera, which are eyeless stygobionts, occur not only in karstic waters, but also in the interstitium and in subter- ranean waters bordering river valleys such as that of the Rhone river (Boeters & Miiller be found 1992).

  • THE LISTING of PHILIPPINE MARINE MOLLUSKS Guido T
August 2017 Guido T. Poppe A LISTING OF PHILIPPINE MARINE MOLLUSKS - V1.00 THE LISTING OF PHILIPPINE MARINE MOLLUSKS Guido T. Poppe INTRODUCTION The publication of Philippine Marine Mollusks, Volumes 1 to 4 has been a revelation to the conchological community. Apart from being the delight of collectors, the PMM started a new way of layout and publishing - followed today by many authors. Internet technology has allowed more than 50 experts worldwide to work on the collection that forms the base of the 4 PMM books. This expertise, together with modern means of identification has allowed a quality in determinations which is unique in books covering a geographical area. Our Volume 1 was published only 9 years ago: in 2008. Since that time “a lot” has changed. Finally, after almost two decades, the digital world has been embraced by the scientific community, and a new generation of young scientists appeared, well acquainted with text processors, internet communication and digital photographic skills. Museums all over the planet start putting the holotypes online – a still ongoing process – which saves taxonomists from huge confusion and “guessing” about how animals look like. Initiatives as Biodiversity Heritage Library made accessible huge libraries to many thousands of biologists who, without that, were not able to publish properly. The process of all these technological revolutions is ongoing and improves taxonomy and nomenclature in a way which is unprecedented. All this caused an acceleration in the nomenclatural field: both in quantity and in quality of expertise and fieldwork. The above changes are not without huge problematics. Many studies are carried out on the wide diversity of these problems and even books are written on the subject.
