State of Minnesota Department of Public Safety Minnesota Crime Information 2002 Bureau of Criminal Apprehension Criminal Justice Information Systems Section Uniform Crime Report July 1, 2003 The Honorable Tim Pawlenty Governor of the State of Minnesota And Members of the Legislature State Capitol Building Saint Paul, Minnesota 55155 Dear Governor Pawlenty: In accordance with Minnesota State Statute 299C.18, the Department of Public Safety, Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is pleased to submit the Minnesota Crime Information-2002 report for your review. In the year 2002 Minnesota recorded a 0.7% increase in Part 1 crimes. Part 1 crimes include both the serious violent and property crime categories. Violent crimes (murder, rape, robbery and aggravated assault) decreased 4% and property crimes (burglary, larceny, motor vehicle theft and arson) increased .5%. This report provides statistics to law enforcement personnel, members of State government and the general public for their use in analyzing crime in Minnesota. The statistics are in compliance with the guidelines set forth by the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Uniform Crime Reporting Program and will also be included in their Crime in the United States-2002 publication. The data should not be considered a comparison of individual law enforcement agency activities as there are numerous factors involved in measuring crime data that cannot be addressed with this publication. These crime statistics have been compiled with the dedication and participation of the police and sheriffs throughout Minnesota. With their continued contributions the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is able to provide a comprehensive picture of crime in Minnesota.
