Plant records 2017 DP – David Pickering HCr – Helena Crouch IL – Irene Lucas Explanatory notes JBe – Jenny Bennett The following list is the author’s selection of records that add to the species lists for each of JBr – Jane Brown Wiltshire’s 50 odd 10 kilometre squares. They JRM – John Moon are for species found for the first time during MBu – Martin Buckland 2017: new species records found in 2018 will follow in the next newsletter. MWR – Martin Rand NJS – Nicholas Self The selection includes any species that is new to the county or vice-counties, those of PD – Paul Darby national importance and many other species of PLe – Penny Lee interest. Much of 2017’s recording stretched into areas not previously covered well and so PM – Peter Marren many very common species such as Field PMW – Pat Woodruffe Maple Acer campestre, Creeping Thistle PSk – Paul Skelton Cirsium arvense and Yorkshire Fog Holcus lanatus entered the new 10 km list. These, PXW -Paul Wexler together with some garden escapes have been RAi – Richard Aisbitt removed from this edition to save space in this publication. However the remaining records RDu – Rosemary Duckett still represent approximately half of those SFi – Sue Fitzpatrick eligible and is otherwise simply the author’s SG – Sarah Grinstead own personal choice. It has only been Agrostis stolonifera (Creeping Bent); Meysey documented within 200 GB 1km squares since Hampton, RAi. 2010. Alisma lanceolatum (Narrow-leaved Water- Arctium minus (Lesser Burdock); Meysey plantain); South of Bewley Crescent, Lacock Hampton, RAi on River Avon; in Wiltshire & Berkshire Canal near Tacklemore Wood where locally Arum italicum ssp. italicum (Italian Lords- common, DG. and-Ladies); Monkton Farleigh, in hedge, DG. Alliaria petiolata (Garlic Mustard); Meysey Arum maculatum (Lords-and-Ladies); Hampton, RAi. Meysey Hampton, RAi. Alnus cordata (Italian Alder); Ashton Keynes Asplenium adiantum-nigrum (Black CWP, a sapling, RAi and MBu. Spleenwort); Greatfield, garden wall. MBu. Aster novae-angliae (Hairy Michaelmas- Althaea officinalis (Marsh-mallow); Great daisy). Ashley Wood dumped at industrial Cumberwell landfill site, over 15 clumps within area. DG. 1st Wiltshire record. a 50m radius, DG. 1st Wiltshire record. Aster novi-belgi (Confused Michaelmas- Amaranthus hybridus (Green Amaranth); daisy); Stock Wood, DG. Great Cumberwell landfill site. Only the second Aster x salignus (Michaelmas-daisy); Dance record for VC7, DG; determined by Common, Cricklade, dense patches. RAi. F.Verloove. Aster x versicolor (Late Michaelmas-daisy); Amaranthus hypochondriacus (Princes’- Tockenham Wick, a single plant in road verge. feather); Great Cumberwell landfill site, DG. DG and MBu. 1st Wiltshire record. Atriplex prostrata (Spear-leaved Orache); Anemanthele lessoniana (New Zealand Meysey Hampton, RAi. Wind-grass); Bradford-on-Avon, one clump in road verge, HCr & DG. 1st Wiltshire record. Aubrieta deltoidea (Aubrieta); Winsley. DG. Bittlesea Farm near Bradenstoke, two plants in Avena fatua (Wild-oat); Meysey Hampton,RAi. kerb and pavement. 2nd VC7 record, DG. Avena sterilis (Winter Wild-oat); Chittoe Anemone x hybrida (Japanese Anemone); Heath; occasional throughout fringes of maize Malmesbury, on wall beside the River Avon, crop. DG & MBu. Only the second recent WBS. Wiltshire record. Anisantha diandra (Great Brome); Great Barbarea intermedia (Medium-flowered Chalfield, two areas, one of which had a large Winter-cress); Great Cumberwell landfill site, population in an arable field. DG. Inwood, DG. growing with Bromus secalinus (Rye Brome) at edge of arable field. DG. Berberis vulgaris (Barberry); High Clear Down, in hedge by track below WWT Nature Anisantha sterilis (Barren Brome); Meysey Reserve; Kingsdown Lane, Blunsdon where Hampton, RAi probably planted, both RAi. Bolboschoenus maritimus (Sea Club-rush); Cannabis sativa (Hemp); Great Cumberwell Castle Eaton; continuous stands but possibly landfill site. A single plant representing only introduced into large pond in arable area, RAi. the third County record, DG. Borago officinalis (Borage); Berwick Bassett, Cardamine flexuosa (Wavy Bitter-cress); MBu; Easton Grey, DG. Broad Blunsdon, RAi. Brachypodium rupestre (Tor-grass); Broad Carduus crispus (Welted Thistle); Meysey Blunsdon; Castle Eaton; Marston Meysey and Hampton, RAi. Sevenhampton churchyard, all RAi. Carduus tenuiflorus (Slender Thistle); Brachypodium sylvaticum (False-brome); Bishopstone Chalk East; hundreds on south Meysey Hampton, RAi. facing slope within rabbit disturbed ground, RAi. Also recorded at Kingsdown as relic of Brassica nigra (Black Mustard); Easton Grey, game crop and near Upper South Wraxhall, DG. DG. These records represent four of only six Briza maxima (Greater Quaking-grass); recent records for this species. Bradford-on-Avon, outside gardens, an annual Carduus x stangii (C. crispus x nutans); occurrence for many years. HCr & DG. Woodborough Hill, several plants by adjacent Bromopsis ramosa (Hairy Brome); Meysey farm buildings, WBS. 1st VC7 record. Hampton, RAi. Nightingale Wood, Swindon, edge of car park, RAi, AA and SFi. 2nd VC7 record. Both these Bromus commutatus (Meadow Brome); records are post Wiltshire Flora. There is only Meysey Hampton, RAi. one other VC7 pre-flora record; from Shire Hill Bromus racemosus (Smooth Brome); in 1947. Monkton Farleigh west, DG; Sevenhampton, Carex pallescens (Pale Sedge); Alderton RAi. Grove, 50 plants up against hedgerow, DG. Bromus secalinus (Rye Brome); Clyffe Inwood, a large population growing on the Pypard Wood, in adjacent arable field, MBu. north side of a ride. DG. Draycott Park, 20 plants in arable field; Carex pilulifera (Pill Sedge); Draycot Park, Rodbourne Bottom, two arable sites both DG. north; many clumps in acid grassland. DG. Brunnera macrophylla (Great Forget-me- Carex spicata (Spiked Sedge); Cricklade; not); Easton Grey, adjacent to gardens, DG. Meysey Hampton, in a rough herb-free A single plant growing in mortar of a brick wall meadow, both RAi. near Seagry Wood (north), DG & MBu. Carex x pseudoaxillaris (C. otrubae x Calystegia pulchra (Hairy Bindweed); Many remota); south of Lacock around the edge of more records of this recent ‘discovery’. Found large pond. DG; determined by M.Porter, BSBI growing quite frequently in a hedge along the Referee. A3102 near Chittoe Heath, MBu & DG. Also, four sites at Cricklade, variously along old rail Carum carvi (Caraway); [NS GB:EN Eng:CR] track, cycle way and South Meadow Lane, all Chittoe Heath; 8 large plants in a market RAi. In Swindon it was found scrambling over garden as an apparent spontaneous weed. bramble patches at Quarry Wildlife Garden Only the 5th recent VC7 record and 8th overall; LNR, RAi. the first in 1957. DG & MBu. Calystegia sepium (Hedge Bindweed); Cerastium tomentosum (Snow-in-summer); Meysey Hampton, RAi. Juggler’s Lane, Yatesbury probably from dumped garden waste, MBu. West of Monkton Campanula persicifolia (Peach-leaved Farleigh, DG. Bellflower); Monkton Farleigh growing with other non-native species and an assumed Ceratophyllum demersum (Rigid Hornwort); garden throw-out. HCr & DG. Seend Cleeve, Cricklade, RAi. growing at the roadside beside gardens, DG. Chaerophyllum temulum (Rough Chervil); Campanula portenschlagiana (Adria Meysey Hampton, RAi. Bellflower); Highworth, RAi; Hullavington, DG; Chenopodium ficifolium (Fig-leaved Widham, Purton, MBu. Goosefoot); Stock Wood, DG. Chenopodium murale (Nettle-leaved Echium vulgare (Viper’s-bugloss); Stock Goosefoot); [GB:VU Eng:EN] Great Wood, a single plant, DG. Cumberwell landfill site, DG; determined
