FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Hollywood North Rising Star Nicole LaPlaca Vancouver, October 20, 2013 - Canadian-born Nicole LaPlaca is one of Hollywood North’s brightest rising stars. The Leo Award-nominated actress received the accolade in 2004 for her performance in the short film Beachbound. Nicole most recently appeared on screen in the Lifetime television movie Secret Liaison co-starring Meredith Monroe. She can also be seen on City TV in an episode of the sitcom Package Deal ("Kim vs. Karaoke") and has just wrapped a guest appearance on Steven Spielberg’s popular sci-fi tv series Falling Skies, episode 1, season 4, set to air next summer. Audiences will recognize Nicole from her most notable role as Natalia in the hit Warner Brothers film Another Cinderella Story, in which she starred alongside Selena Gomez and Jane Lynch. According to Nicole, one of her favorite things about inhabiting that character was that she found it "exhilarating to play the enemy.” She says her dream role would be the character of “Deb” from the Showcase series Dexter because “she’s so raw and unpredictable.” Nicole hopes to one day work with renowned film director Martin Scorsese. Nicole made her industry debut at the age of 9, after following in her sister Jennifer's footsteps. She has appeared in over 40 professional projects to-date, with numerous guest and supporting roles in television shows, films, commercials and stage productions including: Falling Skies, Package Deal, Alcatraz, Supernatural, American Dreams, Stephen King's The Dead Zone and End Game. In addition to Another Cinderella Story and Secret Liaison, her other film credits include John Tucker Must Die, Mount Pleasant and The Lizzie McGuire Movie. -

The published literature demonstrates that there are no formulations for twin stern propellers to compute the maximum scouring depth. Another important limitation is the fact that the formulations proposed only use one type of maneuvering during the experimental campaign, assuming that vessels are constantly being undocked. Trying to reproduce the real arrival and departure maneuvers, 24 different tests were conducted at an experimental laboratory in a medium-scale water tank using a twin propeller model to estimate the consequences and the maximum scouring depth produced by stern propellers during the backward/docking and forward/undocking scenarios. -

CHAPTER 1 Organisms and Human Bodies as Contagions in the Post-Apocalyptic State Robert A. Booth n this chapter, I show how discourses of contagion and pollution not only imbue many post-apocalyptic cinema and television narratives but also mirror public discourse about immigration. Further, I examine the often- I 1 racialized immigrant in post-apocalyptic film and television that is, in essence, a discourse on insider–outsider social divisions and relationships of power. Finally, I elucidate the argument that post-apocalyptic film and television rein- force the primacy of centralized political authority, namely the State, and post- 9/11 post-apocalyptic film in particular reinforces the hegemony of the State. The post-apocalyptic subgenre of science fiction and/or horror has become popular fodder for cinema and television. As Susan Sontag notes, “the science fiction film . is concerned with the aesthetics of destruction, with the pecu- liar beauties to be found in wreaking havoc, making a mess. And it is in the imagery of destruction that the core of a good science fiction film lies.”2 Portrayals of the post-apocalypse often index or echo visual memories of terrible societal traumatic events of the past.3 With the experience of the social, political, economic, and emotional trauma of the 9/11 attacks, one might reasonably assume that Americans would acquire a distaste for graphic destructive violence. Certainly, after the attacks, filmmakers occasionally felt pressured to remove images of the Twin Towers or to change content that might evoke the tragedy, such as planes crashing into skyscrapers. However, post-apocalyptic genres remain ever popular in American television and cinema. -

ABSTRACT Greece’s “supply” problems have been present since its acces- sion to the European Union in 1981; the “demand” problems caused by austerity and wage cuts have compounded the structural problems. This paper discusses the severity of the demand contraction, examines product market reforms, many of which have not been implemented, and their potential impact on com- petitiveness and the economy, and labor market reforms, many of which have been implemented but due to their timing have contributed to the collapse of demand. The paper argues in favor of eurozone-wide policies that would help Greece recover and of linking reforms with debt relief. reece joined the European Union (EU) in 1981 largely on politi- Gcal grounds to protect democracy after the malfunctioning political regimes that followed the civil war in 1949 and the disastrous military dictatorship of the years 1967–74. Not much attention was paid to the economy and its ability to withstand competition from economically more advanced European nations. A similar blind eye was turned to the economy when the country applied for membership in the euro area in 1999, becom- ing a full member in 2001. It is now blatantly obvious that the country was not in a position to compete and prosper in the European Union’s single market or in the euro area. A myriad of restrictions on free trade had been introduced piecemeal after 1949, with the pretext of protecting those who fought for democracy. -

Summer, 2020 Dear Friends of the Music Department, The 2019-20 academic year has been like no other. After a vibrant fall semester featur- ing two concerts by the Parker Quartet, the opening of the innovative Harvard ArtLab featuring performances by our faculty and students, an exciting array of courses and our inaugural department-wide throwdown–an informal sharing of performance projects by students and faculty–we began the second semester with great optimism. Meredith Monk arrived for her Fromm Professorship, Pedro Memelsdorff came to work with the Univer- sity Choir as the Christoph Wolff Scholar, Esperanza Spalding and Carolyn Abbate began co-teaching an opera development workshop about Wayne Shorter’s Iphigenia, and Vijay Iyer planned a spectacular set of Fromm Players concerts and a symposium called Black Speculative Musicalities. And then the world changed. Harvard announced on March 10, 2020 that due to COVID-19, virtual teaching would begin after spring break and the undergraduates were being sent home. We had to can- cel all subsequent spring events and radically revise our teaching by learning to conduct classes over Zoom. Our faculty, staff, and students pulled together admirably to address the changed landscape. The opera workshop (Music 187r) continued virtually; students in Vijay Iyer’s Advanced Ensemble Workshop (Music 171) created an album of original mu- sic, “Mixtape,” that is available on Bandcamp; Meredith Monk created a video of students in her choral class performing her work in progress, Fields/Clouds, and Andy Clark created an incredible performance of the Harvard Choruses for virtual graduation that involved a complicated process of additive recording over Zoom. -

European Views on the UK's Renegotiation: Spain, Finland

But how do countries across the EU view the UK’s renegotiation? Building on a report published in 2014 by the German Council on Foreign Relations, EUROPP is running a series of overviews of the renegotiation from each of the EU’s member states. Compiled by the LSE’s Tim Oliver and written by authors based at universities and research institutions, the overviews will set out what discussion – if any – there has been about the renegotiation and the wider views within each country on the renegotiation and a potential Brexit. This post is the fifth in the series and gives views from Spain, Finland, Estonia and Cyprus. Credit: Kirk McKoy/Los Angeles Times On the second floor of a hospital, a criminal profiler is strolling down a hallway with a colleague when an alarm goes off. Several doctors and nurses sprint past him to an intensive care unit where a child and potential witness to a crime is being treated. The scene, for an upcoming episode of the CBS crime drama “Criminal Minds,” actually unfolded last week on the former Sherman Way campus of Northridge Hospital Medical Center, which solely serves as a location backdrop for shows that have included such dramas such as TNT’s “Rizzoli & Isles” and "Hawthorne." The Northridge facility is among a dozen current and onetime medical centers and hospitals represented by Real to Reel Inc., a 30-year-old Van Nuys location agency that has built a successful niche supplying location managers with something they frequently seek: film-ready hospital settings. “Hospitals are a staple of crime dramas. Someone’s always getting shot, so we’re always going to the hospitals,” said Jeffrey Spellman, location manager for “Criminal Minds,” which plans to shoot its next episode at another closed hospital, St. Luke Medical Center in Pasadena. “To have a facility like this makes our job much easier.” Though Real to Reel books productions for a variety of commercial properties, including the popular Hollywood & Highland Center, at least 40% of its business comes from steering movies and TV shows to hospitals. -
