The summer months often see us more heavily involved in travel and busy schedules, and it’s great to see old friends come together for an evening of educational talks and socializing. Ermin Chow had a chance to give us an update on his visit to the RCNA this year in Winnipeg. It sounds like a few people had a chance to make to this year’s RCNA, which included a tour of the Royal Canadian Mint. I have to give credit to the Royal Canadian Mint, as it just unveiled its latest series of coins, commemorating the 75th anniversary of Superman. It is unfortunate that they did not release these coins into general circulation, instead keeping them non-circulating legal tender. It is a great attempt at blurring the lines of comic book and numismatic collectors, as well as both young and young at heart fans. And, of course, mints around the world have quickly starting issuing commemorative coins in celebration of the birth of Prince George, the third in line for the throne. Wouldn’t it be exciting if the Bank of Canada also joined in this historical event and issued another series of royal family banknotes, like they did in 1935. Although unlikely, it would seem appropriate, considering the magnitude of the popularity of the royal family right now. See everyone at the next meeting. By Marc Bink he other day, I was cleaning off my desk at the house (a rare Toccurrence), when I stumbled across a buried stack of coins (a common occurrence). I found a stash of 2 and 5 Reichsmark coins that were dated 1934 to 1937 along with about a Volkswagen’s worth of Reichsmark notes. As is usual for coins like this, they were in reasonable shape; used but not worn out, but also black and green with tarnish from lack of use. The first thought that crossed my mind was what were these things doing there? But, as is the usual result in this process, I couldn’t remember whether they were replacements or for eventual re-sale, and I didn’t have time to go into the book and check. So they wound up in A Penny’s Worth yet another stack on a different part of the desk, awaiting reburial and rediscovery a few months as the cycle repeats itself yet again.

The Napoleon Series The Germans under the French Eagles: Volume II The Baden Contingent – Chapter 3 Part I By Commandant Sauzey Translated by Greg Gorsuch CHAPTER III CAMPAIGN OF 1809 EBERBERG. -- ESSLING. -- RAAB. -- WAGRAM. -- HOLLABRUNN. ZNAÏN. _____________________ Austria, seeing the Emperor engaged in the Spanish war and desiring to take revenge for Austerlitz, was arming silently and preparing to enter the field. As early as October 1808, the Grand Duke of Baden had warned Napoleon of Austrian arming and he had replied on 17 October, reassuring his ally and assuring him that he could not see between Austria and France any reason for a rupture. But at the beginning of 1809, there were no more illusions possible: a conflict became imminent and it was necessary, without delay, to cover all eventualities.1 The Emperor Napoleon to Grand Duke Charles Frederick of Baden. Valladolid, 15 January 1809. "My brother, having beaten and destroyed the Spanish armies and defeated the English army, and learning that Austria is continuing her arming and making movements, I have thought fit to go to Paris. I pray your Royal Highness to inform me immediately of the situation of his troops. I was satisfied with the ones he sent me for Spain. I hope that your Highness will be able to supplement with 8,000 men the troops whom he will put in campaign, because it is better to bring war to our enemies than to receive it." "With that, I pray to God that he will have you in his holy and worthy guard." Your good brother, NAPOLEON.

  • The Loyalty Trap
The Loyalty Trap 2017 | Stephen Shaw Ever since reward programs first became popular over fifty years ago, marketers have been trapped into thinking that customer loyalty can be bought. But customers today are looking for more than just rewards – they want to be treated honestly and fairly. She jokingly refers to it as her “hobby”. Every weekend, before heading out to shop, she scans the grocery and drug store flyers in search of deals. But she’s not looking for ordinary coupons and discounts – she’s searching for Air Miles offers. She is an avid points collector, hooked on earning miles, and loves to play the loyalty game: taking advantage of bonus miles and special promotions, just so she can cash them in for free trips. A typical calculation might go something like this: “Robaxacet Platinum gets me 10 miles for buying two. But that’s still pretty expensive. If I wait for the drug store’s standard deal – spend a total of $50 to get 100 miles – am I further ahead?” She works diligently at collecting those miles – so diligently in fact that when Air Miles occasionally bungles a transaction by failing to award her the right number of miles, she’s instantly on the phone to them, The coalition program Air Miles demanding a correction. Of course, whenever she has dominates loyalty marketing in Canada to wait longer than necessary “due to unexpected call with 9 million “collectors” volume”, which is much of the time, her indignation grows by the minute. Even more bothersome: the ordeal she has to go through to redeem those hard-earned miles.
