FOREWORD OF THE RECTOR Dear colleagues and students, Ankara University is a research intensive university that organizes study programs and scientific research in the fields of Science, Health and Social Sciences with 18 faculties, 14 Graduate schools, 11 Vocational Schools, 1 State Conservatory, 1 College of Foreign Languages. Turkey occupies a unique geographic position, lying partly in Asia and partly in Europe. Throughout its history, it has acted as a bridge between the two continents. The country has a north-south extent that ranges from about 300 to 400 miles (480 to 640 km) and it stretches about 1,000 miles from west to east. Turkey is a predominantly mountainous country and true lowland is confined to the coastal fringes. Turkey is a democratic, secular, unitary, constitutional republic with an ancient cultural heritage. Turkey is an independent Turkic state which has become increasingly integrated with the West through membership in organizations such as the Council of Europe, NATO, OECD, OSCE and the G-20 major economies. Turkey’ s population is 80.810.525 Language: Turkish. The capital is Ankara and it has 81 cities. Time Difference: GMT + 2 6 Democratic Turkish Republic, in 1923, was established by the pioneering of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. 3. ANKARA THE CAPITAL CITY of REPUBLIC of TURKEY Ankara is the capital of Turkey and is the second biggest city of the country after İstanbul. It is the center of the Turkish Government and all foreign ambassadors’ center. As with many ancient cities, Ankara has gone by several names over the ages. It has been identified with the Hittite cult center Ankuwaš, although this remains a matter of debate. In classical antiquity and during the medieval period, the city was known as Ankyra (Ἄγκυρα, "anchor") in Greek and Ancyra in Latin; the Galatian-Celtic name was probably a similar variant. Following its annexation by the Seljuk Turks in 1073, the city became known in many European languages as Angora, a usage which continued until its official
