Conductual In Memoriam: William D. Timberlake (1942–2019) In Memoriam: William D. Timberlake (1942–2019)1, Robert Ian Bowers2 Published under the CC BY licence Bill Timberlake was spry at seventy. Although he held the presence of someone who had lived for centuries, he stood straight and strong. Yet, just a few years later, weakened by a progressive, terminal disease, Timberlake took a bad fall, from which he would never recover. William D. Timberlake (19 November 1942-17 October 2019) earned his PhD in experimental psychology at University of Michigan in 1969 under the supervision of David Birch. He joined the Indiana University psychology faculty the same year, where he remained for the rest of his career (see Arnet, 2019, for a biography). Timberlake will be remembered for many achievements. He conducted important work in a wide variety of areas related to the behaviour of animals, including behavioural economics, contrast effects, spatial cognition, adjunctive behaviour, time horizons, and circadian entrainment of feeding and drug use. By 1983, he had published two influential theories, and a wealth of data supporting them. The earlier of these theories, his disequilibrium approach to reinforcement, has been known by various names, at various stages of development: behaviour regulation theory, response deprivation theory, molar equilibrium theory, and disequilibrium theory (Timberlake & Allison, 1974; Timberlake & Wozny, 1979; Timberlake, 1980; Hanson & Timberlake, 1983; for an updated introduction, see Jacobs, et al., 2019). The disequilibrium approach involves a shift in conceptualisation of reinforcement: reinforcement is attributed not to environmental stimuli, but to constrained behaviours. Given the centrality of reinforcement in mainstream views--a notion not updated since Thorndike (1911) decreed his Law of Effect--this meant a shift in bedrock. -

FICKEN T•E last 30 yearshave seen the developmentof a new approachto the study of behavior, which has increasinglyinterested ornithologists as they have attemptedto understandavian biologyfully. This new ap- proachis now known as ethology. Both amateur and professionalorni- thologistshave contributedto its progressfrom the beginning. A basictenet of ethologyis that all behaviorof animalscan eventually be understood.The ethologistattempts to explainbehavior functionally (what doesit do for the animal?), causally(what are the internal and externalfactors responsible for each given behavior?),and evolutionarily (what is the probablephylogeny of the behavior,how doesit contribute to th'esurvival of the species,and what are the selectivepressures acting uponit?) (seeTinbergen, 1951, 1959; Hinde, 1959b). Somebasic proceduresare essentialin an ethologicalstudy (Hinde, 1959b: 564). The first step is to describeand classifyall the behavior of an animal, at the same time, if possible,dividing the behavior into logicalunits which can be dealt with furtherin other disciplines--particu- larly physiologyand ecology(see Russellet al., 1954). Althoughstudies often beginqualitatively, they eventuallyshould be quantified. Generali- zations,which are to be valid for many species,must be basedon work using closelyrelated speciesfirst, and more distantly related ones later. The animal is studied as an integrated whole. Some workers, notably Konrad Lorenz, keep and breed animalsin captivity under closescrutiny. Most of this paper dealswith communicationof birds. We have stressed particularly the analysisof displays,their evolution,and their relation to taxonomy--topicsof great interest to systematicornithologists as well as to ethologists.In addition, we discusscertain maintenanceactivities. Summary Domestication has provided the horse with food, shelter, veterinary care and protection, allowing individuals an increased chance of survival. However, the restriction of movement, limited breeding opportunities and a requirement to expend energy for the benefit of another species conflict with the evolutionary processes which shaped the behaviour of its predecessors. The behaviour of the horse is defined by its niche as a social prey species but many of the traits which ensured the survival of its ancestors are difficult to accommodate in the domestic environment. There has been a long association between horses and humans and many features of equine behaviour suggest a predisposition to interspecific co-operation. However, the importance of dominance in human understanding of social systems has tended to overemphasise its importance in the human-horse relationship. The evolving horse-human relationship from predation to companionship, has resulted in serial conflicts of interest for equine and human participants. Only by understanding the nature and origin of these conflicts can ethologists encourage equine management practices which minimise deleterious effects on the behaviour of the horse. 1 Introduction Evolution affects an animal's physical characteristics and its behaviour through natural selection. Evidence for the effects of evolution on the structure of early equids is particularly abundant in the fossil record. There is far less evidence for behavioural evolution. -

INTRODUCTION Like many other branches of biological research, comparative ethology owes its existence to a discovery. The discovery of a new particulate process, the function of which is comparatively independent from the function of the organism as a 'whole', always opens a new line of analytical approach. The nature of the process then determines the method most favourable for its experimental investigation, and this method, in its turn, determines the direction in which analytical research continues to proceed. There are many cases in which the development of a new and independent branch of biological science has thus been determined by the character of one particularly favourable object, modern genetics being the most obvious example. The distinct and particulate physiological process whose discovery may be identified with the origin of comparative ethology as an independent branch of science is represented by a certain type of innate, genetically determined behaviour patterns. Charles Otis Whitman, who was the first to discover them, called them simply 'Instincts'; Oskar Heinroth, who, ten years later, independently rediscovered them, spoke of 'arteigene Triebhandlungen'; I myself have called them 'Instinkthandlungen', 'Erbkoordinationen' and 'Instinktbewegungen' successively, thus further mixing up terminology. I shall, in the conference on terminology, included in the programme of this Symposium, propose the term endogenous movements for this type of innate behaviour pattern. -
