Many a winner of group races and high class handicaps have been trained at Bonita including the King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot twice, the Stewards Cup at Goodwood and the Magnet Cup at York. Bonita was set up by George Edwardes, the theatrical impresario in the 1890s. Former trainers include the Hartigan brothers, Sir Gordon Richards and the leading national hunt trainer Bob Turnell who used the gallops and facilities to train many winners including the Gold Cup and the Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham. Bonita has been owned by only two families in the last 120 years. Situation Ideally placed for quick access to the M4, Bonita is just 2 miles from Marlborough and 12 miles from Lambourn; an area steeped in horseracing with a wide range of associated ancillary services. A downland market town, Marlborough is a sought after residential area with excellent private and state schools of national repute, leisure and cultural amenities with an international flavour and a bustling High Street with independent and national retailers. The Top Yard This attractive L-shaped yard provides 24 stables, tack and feed rooms, a horse walker with paddocks beyond. Above the yard is Top Walk with two bedrooms, sitting room, kitchen and bathroom. This and the Bottom Yard are linked by an area of woodland interspersed with horse walks and a former tennis court now used as a sand arena. Little Paddocks Enjoying a superlative situation at the end of the main drive this unusually spacious three bedroom bungalow overlooks the paddocks and water meadows. Against a backdrop of mature woodland, Little Paddocks was built for Sir Gordon Richards of mellow brick under a tiled roof. Additional accommodation is provided by a studio flat located above the garage. Little Paddocks is well screened from the stable operations and has panoramic views over paddocks and water meadows. The Bottom Yard The Bottom Yard, approached directly from the village, mainly comprises a traditional stable yard with 21 boxes, tack and feed rooms, stores, and two integral dwellings in need of refurbishment, which could be combined into one house, or remain as two cottages. In addition are a further 6 boxes, the 10 bedroom hostel, the 3 bay hay and machinery barn, and extensive areas of hard standing and storage. Alongside the seasonal River Og, this could have a most attractive outlook. There have been proposals to redevelop the Bottom Yard: for details refer to the agents. The Paddocks and Water Meadows The stable yards and Little Paddocks are immediately adjacent to around 9.8 acres of gently sloping paddocks, 10 acres of water meadows and 3.5 acres of woodland totalling in all about 27.8 acres (12.9 ha). A further block of paddocks is immediately opposite the Top Yard and amounts to 35 acres of paddocks with mains water and about 6 acres of shelter belt woodland. These paddocks can provide a link to the gallops via the Green Lane. Gallops and grassland The renowned gallops cover about 154 acres of the finest turf and provide 6 different gallops ranging from 5 to 10 furlongs: The Bungalow Mile: starts from the road between shelter belts this rises gently across open downland. The Starting Gate Canter: 5 furlongs. Four Mile Clump: 10 furlongs with an uphill finish. This is the best gallop reserved for fast work. The 5 Furlongs: A stiff 5 furlongs uphill, between the Old Marlborough Road track and the Four Mile Clump gallop. The Set Aside: 4½ furlongs, next to the 5 Furlong, used in wet weather. The Round Gallop: A mile, closest to the yard, very good 2 year old ground and a spring gallop. There is a variety of potential locations for an all- weather gallop, subject to planning approval.
