These standards will affect how Orthodox Christianity, as well as other religious traditions, is taught. This presentation will provide an up-to-date review of the current situation, including a discussion of curriculum and pedagogy, as well as attitudes of parents and pupils towards Orthodox religious education lessons. Alexopoulos, Prof. Theodoros “Primacy in the Orthodox World: A Re-evaluation of a new Ecclesiology Grounding Primacy in the Immanent Trinity” January 11, 16:30-18:00 Session 60 The present study tries to evaluate the notion, put forward in the last decades by some Orthodox theologians, that one should consider primacy and the function of primacy in the context of the Holy Trinity. For if this is the case, it seems to call into question the historic Orthodox criticism of Roman- Catholic thinking regarding the Filioque (i.e., that they have confused economy and theology) since now the Orthodox Church is doing the exact same thing in terms of Ecclesiology. Is this idea of founding primacy in the immanent Trinity compatible with the tradition of the Orthodox ecclesiology or theologically sustainable? The study focuses on this question by a thorough investigation of those patristic authors (from Gregory the Theologian, Gregory of Nyssa, Maximos Confessor, John of Damascus, Photios of Constantinople, and Gregory Palamas) who explore the idea of whether or not there exists an „order“ (τάξις) within the Holy Trinity and clarify the proper relation between theology and economy.

Admirers of Emperor Alexander III in agreement with the administration of the museum laid flowers to the monument, saying kind word to the blessed memory of the "Emperor Peacekeeper" and in conclusion proclaiming "eternal memory" of the Emperor. Among them was Archpriest Gennady Belovolova. I will faithfully perform my duty", to the 170th anniversary of the birth of Emperor Alexander III. In the official pre-revolutionary historiography of Alexander III he was called "peacekeeper". During his reign there were no wars, the revolutionary movement was crushed and lurking, great social upheaval there was not. In Soviet historiography of Alexander III it was a time for fighting revolutionaries and he received the titles of "reactionary" and "uneducated". In modern Russian historiography is attempts to address the personality of Emperor Alexander III through his relationship to his family, art, and science. The exhibition presents the research of the last 20 years - monographs, journals, books and magazine articles. It reflects with amazing clarity over 120 years of trends and shades the relationship of historians and the public to the era, as well as to the identity of the emperor - from direct apology to the allegations "unbridled, incredibly senseless and brutal".

  • THE CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY of AMERICA Praying with Icons a TREATISE Submitted to the Faculty of the School of Theology and Religiou
THE CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY OF AMERICA Praying with Icons A TREATISE Submitted to the Faculty of the School of Theology and Religious Studies Of The Catholic University of America In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements For the Degree Doctor of Ministry By Jeana M. Visel Washington, D.C. 2017 Praying with Icons Jeana M. Visel, D.Min. Director: Michael Witczak, S.L.D. Today, many Roman Catholics do not understand the role of religious images. Unfamiliar with how to pray with sacred art, many are uncomfortable venerating icons or other images of Christ or the saints. Often, sacred art is used as mere decoration. At the same time, we see increasing interest among Christians in Eastern icons. Without adequate training or theological education, many well-meaning Catholics and Protestants start painting “icons” of poor artistic quality, not following principles of Eastern iconography. Often, the result is bad art and bad visual theology. Consequently, some Orthodox become protective of their tradition, sometimes refusing to work with others who would want to learn iconography. This tension does not help build ecumenical unity. What is needed at this time? Broadly speaking, Roman-rite Catholics must be more intentional about how religious art functions within different sacred spaces. Many could benefit from catechesis on how to “read” religious art, and a deeper understanding of the ancient Christian tradition of visual culture. Beyond cognitive understanding, many Catholics also need to learn how to pray with images. While basic education about sacred images is a start, some people may need assistance “crossing cultures,” from the aniconic to the visual.

Penance and Punishment: Monastic Incarceration in Imperial Russia by A. Joy Demoskoff A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History Department of History and Classics University of Alberta © A. Joy Demoskoff, 2016 ABSTRACT This dissertation explores the practice of public penance as a way of thinking about the relationship between the Russian Orthodox Church and the Russian state during the imperial period. Public penance has a long tradition in the history of the Eastern Church and often took the form of performing monastic labour while undergoing seclusion in a monastery. In imperial Russia, this religious practice became conflated with the state’s incarceration of individuals in monastery prisons for the purpose of social control. The sources for this dissertation include imperial and canon law, the teachings on penance in the church journals and newspapers of the time, and the correspondence between the monastery abbot, the local bishop, the Holy Synod and the provincial and imperial state authorities. Focusing on the Nicolaevan era (1825-1855) as the period in which the practice peaked, a case study of the prison facility at Spaso-Evfimiev Monastery in Vladimir Diocese demonstrates the variety of circumstances to which public penance was applied. Religious dissidents from among the peasantry were confined at Spaso-Evfimiev in the hopes that they could be converted. Noblemen guilty of violent murders or crimes against the state were incarcerated there instead of being exiled to Siberia. Priests and monks who were considered insane were confined among the prisoners as well, along with those who had dishonoured their clerical position in some way.

Louvain Studies 41 (2018): 416-440 doi: 10.2143/LS.41.4.3285587 © 2018 by Louvain Studies, all rights reserved The Promise and Pitfalls of Recent Currents in Contemporary Orthodox Theology of Religions Neven Vukic Abstract. — This article provides a short overview of the trends that have appeared within the theology of interreligious dialogue as practiced in Orthodox theology. A concluding reflection will summarize these developments in a systematic fashion. In the first part of this article, an overview is given of the involvement of the Ecu- menical Patriarchate in matters related to interreligious dialogue and the develop- ments in Orthodox theology of non-Christian religions which might be described as an emergent ‘middle way’. The second section of the article seeks to present some of the major obstacles threatening the development of both, a ‘middle-way’ theology of non-Christian religions and the successful practice of interreligious dialogue. If not dealt with, these obstacles may well derail the entire project of an Orthodox Chris- tian theology of interreligious dialogue. The aim of this article is to present a short survey of the trends that have appeared within the theology of interreligious dialogue as practiced in Orthodox theology. Following an overview of the activities of the Ecu- menical Patriarchate with regard to interreligious dialogue,1 and a short presentation of proposed theologies of non-Christian religions in the first part of the article, the second part will highlight some of the major potential obstacles to these efforts. These ‘obstacles’ are, in fact, theo- logical arguments coming from within the same Orthodox tradition.
