Introduction: Fiction beyond Fiction: Dostoevsky’s Quest for Realism Svetlana Evdokimova and Vladimir Golstein Discussing historical processes leading to the development of nations, Ivan Pavlovich Shatov, a character in Dostoevsky’s novel The Devils, expresses his profound skepticism about modern science and rationalism: There is no nation that set itself up on the foundations of science and reason; there has never been an example of it, unless for a second only, out of stupidity . Science and reason have, from the beginning of time, played a secondary and subordinate part in the life of nations; so it will be till the end of time. Nations are formed and moved by another force which orders and rules them, the origin of which is unknown and inexplicable . It’s the spirit of life, as the Scriptures call it . It’s the aesthetic principle, as the philoso- phers call it; they also identify it as the ethical principle. “The seeking of God,” as I call it more simply . God is the synthetic personality of the whole people, taken from its beginning to its end . Reason has never been able to define good and evil or even to distinguish good from evil even approximately. On the contrary, it has always confused them, shamefully and pathetically; science, in its turn, provided only fist-enforced solutions. Half-science, unknown to humanity till our century has excelled at that in particular, being the most dreadful scourge of humanity, worse than plagues, famine, and war. Half-science is the despot, of a kind that has never been imposed upon humanity before. This despot has its priests and slaves, before 2 Introduction this despot everyone bows with love or superstition hereto unimaginable; the science itself trembles before it, while shamefully condoning it.1 Although the question of national formation and nationalism is not the focus of the present volume, the connection between science, religion, philosophy, and aesthetics is. Shatov’s voice is not Dostoevsky’s own. However, the way Shatov identifies “the spirit of life” dukh( zhizni) with aesthetics (nachalo esteticheskoe), moral philosophy (nachalo nravstvennoe), and with theology (iskanie Boga) as the history-shaping forces, is indicative of Dostoevsky’s awareness of the intense interaction between

What is now known as the Archdiocese of Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania began in 1916 with the tonsuring and consecration of Fr. Alexander Dzubay as Bishop Stephen, within the former North American Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church. His situation, in terms of being an immigrant of Carpatho-Russian ethnicity and a convert to Orthodoxy from the Byzantine Catholic (Greek Catholic) faith, was in no way unique at that time. However, it provides us with a glimpse of the evolving religious landscape and the foundation that was laid for the creation of the archdiocese and for its subsequent development. The Beginning of Orthodoxy in America Orthodoxy in America began in 1794, when Russian missionaries from Valaam Monastery arrived at Kodiak Island in the Aleutian Islands.1 The beginning of Orthodoxy in this country was found mainly in the future state of Alaska (which was a part of Russia) and in California, but very quickly grew up in the industrial areas of the United States such as Minnesota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, New York, and West Virginia. The entirety of North America and Canada was one large diocese with very scattered Orthodox communities.

Of what do we know less than the afterlife? Leo Tolstoy was quoted saying: “We can only know that we know nothing. And that is the highest degree of human wisdom.” Knowing nothing completely contradicts the essence of human nature. Although having noted the importance of this unknowing, using the venture of creative fiction, Tolstoy pined ceaselessly for an understanding of the experience of dying. Tolstoy was afraid of death; to him it was an entity which loomed. I believe his early involvements in war, as well as the death of his brother Dmitry, and the demise of his self-imaged major character Prince Andrei Bolkonsky, whom he tirelessly wrote and rewrote—where he dove into the supposed psyche of a dying man—took a toll on the author. Tolstoy took the plight of ending his character’s life seriously, and attempted to do so by upholding his chief concern: the truth. But how can we, as living, breathing human beings, know the truth of death? There is no truth we know of it other than its existence, and this alone is cause enough to scare us into debilitating fits and ungrounded speculation.

Patrick Durkin Nietzschean Types in The Brothers Karamazov ​ 139817 –Dr. William Angus th 11 ​ February 2019 ​ For the Masters of Arts, English Durkin 1 Abstract Nietzsche and Dostoevsky were contemporaries, and Nietzsche especially was known to admire Dostoevsky’s work. Both authors were interested in the study of the basis for human morality, and the search for a redirection of human morality; one in which the problems they saw with the current understanding of acceptable behaviour according to laws, religion and might is right, could be melded in with their own beliefs and struggles with their own mortality and morality. Although Nietzsche’s collection of essays The Genealogy of Morals, (1887) was ​ ​ written 7 years after Dostoevsky’s The Brothers Karamazov (1880), it is interesting to ​ ​ note that the main character types that Nietzsche believed created hierarchies that developed and sustained the morality of his time, appear in the form of the main characters in The Brothers Karamazov. ​ ​ This thesis will be looking at the The Brothers Karamazov through the different ​ ​ character ‘types’ and the resulting psychomachia of the three legitimate brothers, the older brothers Dmitri and Ivan, and especially that of Alyosha, the youngest brother. The thesis will focus on both elder brothers’ evolution of thought and action through the progress of the novel, and, importantly, on each brothers’ interactions with Alyosha and the turbulent state of mind they regularly leave their younger sibling in.

Death in War and Peace causes changes in characters‟ perception of their own lives, spurring them to live “better.” Tolstoy is widely understood to embed moral lessons in his novels, and, even in his early work, Tolstoy presents an ideal of the right way to live one‟s life. But St. Petersburg’s three centuries have matured its material authenticity, recognizable tableaux and unique urban narratives, chiefly the Petersburg Text. The three of these, intertwined in their formation and development, created a distinctive place-identity. The aura arising from this distinctiveness functioned as a marketable code not only for St. Petersburg’s heritage industry, but also for a future-oriented engagement with post-Soviet hypercapitalism. Reflecting on both up-to-date scholarship and the actual cityscapes themselves, my dissertation will focus on the imaginative landscapes in the historic center of St.

    III “Viper will eat viper”: Dostoevsky, Darwin, and the Possibility of Brotherhood Anna A. Berman As Darwinian thought took root across Europe and Russia in the 1860s after the publication of On the Origin of Species (1859), intellectuals wrestled with the troubling implications the “struggle for existence” held for human harmony and love. How could people be expected to “love their neighbors” if that love ran counter to science? Was that love even commendable if it counteracted the perfection of the human race through the process of natural selection? And if Darwinian struggle was supposed to be most intense among those who were closest and had the most shared resources to compete for, what hope did this hold for the family? Darwin’s Russian contemporaries were particularly averse the idea that members of the same species were in competition.
