I began in bright sunshine but soon it was gloomy and raining - yet again. The Wellington Weekly has a correspondent who reports monthly on the weather we have experienced during the month. He recorded that we had only one 24 hour period during the whole of December, when there was no rain. No wonder that there are twenty five square miles of flooded land on the Levels. I remember calling February the month of “full dyke”. One dreads what the land will be like when the floods finally drain away. I notice that Mary Keen writes in “The Garden” how much there is, of quality, to be seen in the garden in what is often regarded as the dead period. It set me off recall- ing what I have in my small mid-terrace garden.

The collection includes his extensive correspondence written between 1899 and 1930 to Arnold Arboretum staff, mainly Charles Sprague Sargent (1841-1927), the Arboretum's first director; copies of his letters to other Arboretum explorers and colleagues such as Joseph Charles Francis Rock (1884-1962), David Fairchild (1869- 1954), Frank Nicholas Meyer (1875-1918) Alfred Rehder (1863-1949), and members of the Veitch Nurseries in England.     97 CHAPTER TEN AGRICULTURE Saxon methods of agriculture have been described earlier. It is doubtful if any great changes took place immediately after the Conquest. The Normans were rulers, not peasants, (1) and left the work on the land to their Saxon subjects. The great mass of the people of England lived on the land, working to pay their manorial dues and provide for their own needs. The competent became prosperous, and the incompetent became poverty-stricken. (2) Nothing seems to be known of the state of agriculture in Upton-cum-Chalvey in the period under the Priors of Merton, and not as much as could be wished between the Reformation and the beginning of the 19th century. None of the early topographical writers mention Upton-cum-Chalvey, although Leland (3) was certainly at Staines and at Maidenhead between 1534 and 1543, and some of his successors un- doubtedly passed along the main road to Bath. Returns made in 1517 show that enclosures had already taken place in Burnham and Stoke Poges. There is also mention of 'Upton', but it is not clear whether this was Upton-cum-Chalvey, or Upton-in-Dinton. (4) The Common Pound was at the end of Upton Lane, outside Upton Church. (5) James and Malcolm, (6) writing in 1794/6, say: 'Upton has 1,500 acres in common fields. It is reported that in common with neighbouring parishes, the soil is good, well-manured (manure from Eton), and crops abundant, no fallow, but crops every year; no turnips, as fields are common from harvest to seed-time.' (7) This, as Professor Gray points out 'exploded entirely the old hodge of two crops and a fallow' on open lands.' (8) A reference by Pastor Moritz shows that the common idea that England was without hedges in the days of open fields was not entirely true, and that in this area, at least, hedges were already common in 1782.

This site is one of several hundred designed landscapes county‐wide identified by Bucks County Council (BCC) in 1998 (including Milton Keynes District) as potentially retaining evidence of historic interest, as part of the Historic Parks and Gardens Register Review project carried out for English Heritage (now Historic England) (BCC Report No. 508). The list is not conclusive and further parks and gardens may be identified as research continues or further information comes to light. Content BGT has taken the Register Review list as a sound basis from which to select sites for appraisal as part of its Research and Recording Project for designed landscapes in the historic county of Bucks (pre‐1974 boundaries). For each site a dossier is prepared by volunteers trained on behalf of BGT by experts in appraising designed landscapes who have worked extensively for English Heritage (now Historic England) on its Register Upgrade Project. Each dossier includes the following for the site: A site boundary mapped on the current Ordnance Survey to indicate the extent of the main part of the surviving designed landscape, also a current aerial photograph.

    Nigel Colborn BIOGRAPHY Nigel Colborn is a prolific journalist and author, currently writing the gardening column every Saturday in The Daily Mail. He has also written for The Sunday Times, New York Times, Country Homes & Interiors, BBC Gardeners' World Magazine, and Garden News. Nigel is the author of nine books on gardening including ‘Short Cuts to Great Gardens’, ‘The Container Garden’, ‘Annuals and Bedding Plants’, ‘A Flower For Every Day’, ‘Great Plants for Small Gardens’, ‘Plant Solutions’, ‘Natural Gardening the Traditional Way’, and he has also published a number of novels. As a television presenter Nigel has appeared on BBC Gardener’s World, the BBC’s Chelsea Flower Show coverage, and as a guest on BSkyB's The Cook's Garden, and How Does Your Garden Grow for UK Style. He also presented the RHS Wisley Centenary video. Nigel is on the Royal Horticultural Society’s ‘Committee A’, judging at major flower shows including Chelsea and was for seven years a National Judge for the Britain in Bloom Competition. In 2011 he won the Garden Media Guild Lifetime Achievement Award and is holder of the Victoria Medal of Honour (the highest award given by the Royal Horticultural Society). Like any author, he is passionately committed to the craft of writing and he uses this interest to teach writing for the Northamptonshire Education Authority. Up to the mid-nineteenth century contributions to British mycology and lichenology were made by amateurs particularly country clergymen and medical men, with an interest in natural history, and for the past two hundred years there have always been some amateur mycologists who have achieved professional expertise, if not in general mycology, in certain groups such as the larger basidiomycetes, discomycetes, rusts, myxomycetes (mycetozoa), etc. These latter are included as is a selection of other amateur naturalists, particularly those associated with the Woolhope Club, the Yorkshire Naturalists' Union, the Essex Field Club, and the Norfolk & Norwich Naturalists' Society. The main core of the compilation is a series of 'Brief Lives' of those trained mycologists who since the closing years of the nineteenth century were employed by museums, universities, and other institutions and who contributed so much to the knowledge of mycology of the British Isles. At the end of the bok, the biographical compilation is complemented by lists showing the geographical distribution of the mycologists mentioned in the text and the Institutes, Laboratories and Societies which they represented.

This conference is directed at all lovers of alpine plants, whether new or experienced gardeners, amateur or professional. There is such a wide passion for this type of plant that these international conferences are very productive meetings for all those who attend; each person bringing their own particular area of interest to an arena tailored for the exchange of knowledge and opinion.
