Systematics, Barcoding and Ecology of Fungi from Waxcap Grasslands in Britain
Project report to DEFRA 1: 3 December 2010 Systematics, barcoding and ecology of fungi from waxcap grasslands in Britain Collaborations An important component of the project is to bring together professional scientists and specialist volunteers to contribute specimens and ecological data, and later on to explore ways of improving the existing recording and monitoring schemes. The project will provide valuable data to aid decision-making for conservation management, for example designation of SSSIs and establishment of red data lists. The first action was therefore to publicize the project to potential collaborators, and emails and verbal communications took place both directly with known collectors/recording groups and through the British Mycological Society. Excluding those named in the project application, 33 individuals/recording groups have provided specimens and/or identification data. Our initial request was for all species of Hygrocybe and Geoglossaceae. While a number of these are common and widespread, there are concerns that existing species concepts are too broad and are masking cryptic taxa. Along with specimens that we have collected ourselves, we have received a total of 213 collections belonging to 34 species/varieties of Hygrocybe and four species of Geoglossaceae. The collections have come from 27 different vice-counties in England, Wales and Scotland. Much of the field season was poor for waxcap species, although a number of species fruited abnormally late in the year. With this in mind, we are very happy with the response we have received from field workers, and there has been a widespread welcome for our project. We are confident that our field collaborators will continue to support our work throughout the project period and beyond. -

FOREST AND SHADE TREE PESTS Leaflet Number 11 Published Feb 1994 Mushroom Root Rot Republished for the Internet April 2008 SIGNIFICANCE Mushroom Root Rot, caused by the fungus Armillaria tabescens (syn. Clitocybe tabescens and Armillariella tabescens), is a common and widespread disease affecting both conifers and hardwoods in Florida. This disease occurs statewide and has been reported on more than 200 species of trees and shrubs. RECOGNITION Affected plants can show one or more of a variety of symptoms, including: thinning of the crown, yellowing of foliage, premature defoliation, branch dieback, decaying roots, Fig. 1. Some host plants show symptoms of decline for several years before dying. Others die rapidly without any obvious prior symptoms. Mushroom root rot can often be identified without laboratory diagnosis. Conspicuous clusters of mushrooms, (Fig. 1.) which sometimes appear near the base of infected trees, are the most easily recognized diagnostic indicators of the disease. These mushrooms are usually produced in the fall, but they can occur at other times as well. When fresh they are tan to brown, fleshy, with gills beneath the cap, and lacking a ring (annulus) around the stem. While the presence of the characteristic mushrooms is a sure indicator of mushroom root rot, the lack of these fruiting bodies does not indicate the absence of disease. Mushrooms are not formed every year and they decay rapidly when they do appear. -

Kummer and its acceptance as type species of Armillaria (Fr.:Fr.) Staude. Due to recognition of different type species over the years and an extremely variable generic concept, at least 274 species and varieties have been placed in Armillaria (or in Armillariella Karst., its obligate synonym). Only about forty species belong in the genus Armillaria sensu stricto, while the rest can be placed in forty-three other modem genera. This study is based on original descriptions in the literature, as well as studies of type specimens and generic and species concepts by other authors. This publication consists of an alphabetical listing of all epithets used in Armillaria or Armillariella, with their basionyms, currently accepted names, and other obligate and facultative synonyms. -

It has recently been discovered that North America sequestrate fungi has a rich diversity of Elaphomyces species far beyond the four Elaphomyces species described from North America prior to 2012. We describe eight new Elaphomyces species (E. dalemurphyi, E. dunlapii, E. holtsii, E. lougehrigii, E. miketroutii, E. roodyi, E. stevemilleri and E. wazhazhensis) of eastern North America that were collected in habitats from Quebec, Canada south to Florida, USA, west to Texas and Iowa. The ranges of these species vary and with continued sampling may prove to be larger than we have established. -

Basidiomycotina comprise of about 550 genera 15,000 species 2.Many of them are saprophytes while others are parasitic. These includes mushrooms, toad stools, puff balls, stink horns, shelf fungi, bracket fungi, rusts, and smuts. 3.They have Septate mycelium ,non motile spores and are characterised by the production of a club-shaped structure, known as Basidium 4. Basidium is a cell in which karyogamy and meiosis occurs. However, the basidium produces usually four spores externally known as basidiospores Vegetative structure: The vegetative body is well developed mycelium which consists of septate, branched mass of hyphae which grow on or in the substratum obtaining nourishment from host. Sometimes, a number of hyphae become interwoven to form thick strands of mycelium which are called rhizomorphs. In parasitic species the hyphae are either intercellular, sending haustoria into the cells or intracellular. The colour of the hyphae varies according to the species through three stages before the completion of life cycle. Three stages of development of mycelium The three stages are the primary, the secondary and the tertiary mycelium. The primary mycelium consists of hyphae with uninucleate cells. It develops from the germinating basidiospore. When young, the primary mycelium is multinucleate, but later on, due to the formation of septa, it divides into uninucleate cells. The primary mycelium constitutes the haplophase and never forms basidia and basidiospores. The primary mycelium may produce oidia which are uninucleate spores, formed on oidiophores. -

CHARLES NELSON Tippitiwitchet Cottage, Hall Road, Outwell, Wisbech, PE14 8PE, U.K. INTRODUCTION Having been brought up in the lakeland of County Fermanagh, it is hardly surprising that Robert Scott1 (Figure 1) loved outdoors pursuits, fishing for trout, fowling, and geological or botanical rambles looking for minerals, or mosses, lichens and fungi, those inconspicuous but ubiquitous plants that are so often ignored. He was an ‘ingenious, lively man with great merit, and a good botanist’2 and to him Dawson Turner, a Norfolk banker who was also an antiquarian and an eminent botanist, dedicated Muscologiae Hibernicae spicilegium (Figures 2a & b), published privately in Yarmouth in the early Spring 1804. Only the scantiest fragments of information have been published about Scott, who was Professor of Botany in the University of Dublin from late November 1800 until his death in September 1808. Praeger3 recounted his professorship (but gave incorrect dates4) and noted that Scott had discovered intermediate bladderwort, Utricularia intermedia, in Fermanagh5 and the moss Dicranum scottianum in Cavan, that Muscologiae Hibernicae spicilegium was dedicated to him by his ‘chief friend’, Dawson Turner, and that Robert Brown coined Scottia for an Australian genus in the Fabaceae in his memory. Scott received brief mentions in Smith’s English botany,6 Moore’s synopsis of the mosses of Ireland,7 and in the historical preface to Colgan’s Flora of the county Dublin8 where he is credited with adding upright brome, Bromus (= Bromopsis) erectus, to the county’s flora, as well as horned pondweed, Zannichellia palustris, beaked tasselweed, Ruppia maritima, and greater pond-sedge, Carex riparia.
