2012 INTERNATIONAL FLYING DUTCHMAN CLASS OPEN EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP 30th March to 6th April. Club Náutico Altea. Altea, Spain

Dear sailors,

The Club Náutico Altea is proud to be the venue for the 2012 FD European Championship, as the Flying Dutchman is a boat that has always been sailed in Altea Bay. This initiative, which has been organised by sailors and members of Club Náutico Altea, its Board of Directors, and the residents of Altea, and supported by the Town Hall, has succeeded in attracting veteran competitors who have competed in many other European and World Championships.

Organising the 1212 European will be a challenge for the Club Náutico Altea. However, it has over 30 years experience of promoting and the organisation of high-level regattas. For eight years running it has organised a Euroflying Cup competition, a regatta which has been extremely well supported by many European FD sailors.

Altea is a place where you can not only enjoy sailing in the bay, but also its weather, views, atmosphere, and the warmth of its inhabitants. Thanks to the support of the institutions and federations involved, it can provide everything you need for a comfortable stay in Altea while the regatta is being held.

The Club Náutico Altea, the FD of the IFDCO, the Real Federación Española de Vela ( The Spanish Royal Sailing Federation ), the Federación de Vela de la Comunidad Valenciana ( The Sailing Federation of the Autonomous Community of Valencia ) and Altea Town Hall have worked together, in collaboration with private companies, to ensure that the Flying Dutchman European Championship is an organisational and sporting success. Their aim is to ensure that it more than lives up to the expectations of the competitors, representatives, visitors, spectators, and the residents of Altea and that, while the competition is being held, Altea is converted into the sailing capital of the world.

We look forward to seeing you in Altea, Spain, from 30 March to 6 April, 2012.

WEATHER CONDITIONS IN ALTEA BAY

The town of Altea has a microclimate which means that it enjoys good weather almost all year round. The temperature ranges from 12 to 20 degrees during the Easter months. Altea Bay is surrounded by mountains, including Sierra Bernia, Sierra Aitana, and Sierra Helada, with the Rock of Ifach dominating one end of the bay.

The prevailing winds in Altea Bay are southerly winds that often exceed 15 knots. There are also easterly winds that may reach up to 25 knots.

Altea boasts four harbours with access to the sea, which means that it is possible to sail almost every day in the bay. The practice of nautical activities is deeply rooted here thanks to its location and the weather conditions.

CLUB NÁUTICO ALTEA.

Located at the foot of the town of the same name, the harbour in Altea Bay is home to the Club Náutico de Altea, which is a model of cleanliness and order. Founded in 1977, the Club Náutico extends over approximately half of the harbour, and from the outset it has been known for its excellent customer services and commitment to the environment. An example of this is that it was one of the first clubs in to comply with the regulations needed to be awarded the EEC blue flag. Over half of its berths are reserved for visiting yachts, which means that Altea has become a meeting point for cruise yachts of all sizes and flags, providing them with shelter.

The coordinates of the Club Náutico Altea are l:38º35´N L: 003º03´W The harbour faces south-west, which means that it is extremely sheltered from the prevailing winds and seas, even during the worst of the winter weather.

Its facilities provide everything that visitors may need, both for themselves and for their boats.

The Club Náutico Altea has all the facilities required to ensure the wellbeing of its clients. It is well worth a visit, and visitors wanting to make the most of their stay can explore the old town of Altea, one of the last remaining jewels of the Spanish Mediterranean, with its white houses perched on the hillside and its special charm.

The Club Náutico Altea offers sailors everything they need for an enjoyable stay, as well as everything that their boats might need. A team of the best nautical professionals work at the dry dock area, and are ready to undertake any paintwork, carpentry, mechanics, electricity, accessories etc that needs to be done

Ever since it began the Club Náutico Altea has been characterised for its close involvement with sporting activities, in particular sailing; its sailing school was started 30 years ago. Its flagship regatta is the 200 mile A2 regatta, which has been held 25 years running, and which has become the regatta par excellence at national level in the category of two-crew regattas. Competitors in this regatta can earn points for the Spanish A2 Championship.

The Club Náutico Altea has held innumerable sailing regattas since it was founded: yacht regattas; regattas; regattas; regattas; and above all Flying Dutchman regattas. For the last 7 years the Club Náutico Altea has held a qualifying event for the Euroflying Cup, as well as the Spanish Championship, or Cup, in the FD class.

The main purpose of the Club Náutico Altea is to promote sailing, and its competitive sailing school, where young sailors train to compete in Optimist class regattas, is open all year round. In the summer sailing courses are given in which over 400 students enjoy themselves by learning how to sail.

TOURIST INFORMATION

The town of Altea is located 10 km from Benidorm, 50 km from Alicante, and 120 km from Valencia, the capital of the Autonomous Community of Valencia to which, for historical reasons, Altea has belonged since the XIII century and the city where the first industrial trade fair in Spain was held. These geographical boundaries will play a very important role in the future of tourism in the area. Tourism first began in the sixties when the town, whose residents were mainly sailors and labourers, was gradually transformed by artists, and people who come here to enjoy the lifestyle. People who carefully choose their home and surroundings, as well as the neighbours with whom they are going to share the most wonderful time of their life: a time when they can enjoy leisurely tranquillity, explore their creativity, or merely enjoy the peaceful serenity of their surroundings.

The municipality, which is 32 km large and triangular in shape, extends from the gentle shores of the Mediterranean to the northern mountains, whose peaks exceed 800 m in height. It has 7 km of beaches of fine shingle, the result of large stones from the mountains being carried to the sea by the Algar River, and then worn away by the waves until they are transformed into tiny pebbles. These pebbles are used by the craftspeople to make jewellery, and as adornments which they set in silver, leatherwork, rings, or use in other ornaments whose only limits are the imagination of the artists.

Thanks to the present-day tourist demand in the municipality, the most popular residential properties are detached villas. As a result many of the local houses in the country have been renovated and converted into extremely comfortable homes that retain the traditional style, set among the pinewoods of the mountains or the agricultural plots of land. The renovation of the town’s outlying land has complemented the town planning regime in the town of Altea, in particular its old town centre. The town, since it has not been the site of landmark historical events, has focused on the preservation of its typical traditional architecture. The town has always been a place where people have earned their living from the land or from the sea, and it has retained its heritage as one of the most picturesque town in the Mediterranean.

Altea's parish church, built 60 metres above the beach, is a landmark and reference point for the whole of the municipality and the bay, with panoramic views over the sea. Spread out below the dome of the church, white houses built in the typical Mediterranean architectural style of one or two storeys dot the hillside down to the shores of the sea, and serve as the perfect setting for this architectural jewel. The houses clustered on the hillside face the sea and the rising sun, from where their inhabitants have always drawn the strength needed to carry out the daily tasks of a way of life that dates back to time immemorial. The town’s setting, its countryside and imposing bay flanked by the Morro de Toix and the soaring peaks of Sierra Albir, which separates Altea and Benidorm, has given rise to a way of life which is completely in harmony with its surroundings. The town and its environs are a natural sanctuary bathed in the sunlight of the Mediterranean; an irresistible magnet which has always attracted artists to Altea. Altea has 2 yacht clubs, the Altea and the Mascarat, and 2 harbours, the Portet and the Marymontaña. It also has a fishing port where fishermen sell their daily catch at a fish auction every afternoon for consumption in Altea, while it also has the capacity to sell to Valencia and Madrid. Another very important attraction is the Don Cayo Golf Club, which has 8 holes, and small apartments and numerous villas nearby. To the north lies Sierra Bernia, 800 to 1200 m high, which protects the town from the north winds – which are always cold – and endows Altea´s valleys with a perfect microclimate enjoyed by all its inhabitants. The mountains form a curved arc which stretches 12 km to the north-east until it joins another sierra, Sierra Aitana, whose highest peak is 1500 m high.

The whole municipality of Altea, the countryside, the terraces for growing crops, and even half the mountainside is used to grow vegetables, fruit, palm trees, orange trees, lemon trees medlar trees, carob trees, and almond trees. The area has a very efficient irrigation system, in which the water is allocated on the basis of rights which date back centuries and are now unchangeable.

Progress has also brought welcome improvements: a short-distance train, and the Mediterranean motorway, both of which run through the green countryside of Altea.

The typically Mediterranean pine trees grow with renewed vigour on the mountain slopes.

The wisdom of choosing a kind of tourism that promotes a new way of life without forgetting traditional sources of income has always been a determining factor for tourism in Altea. Tourism in Altea focuses on attracting residents who live in Altea almost all year round, not on tourists who come only for a short visit. Altea boasts a host of visual artists, creators, businesspeople, industries, and people who build their homes here so that they will be able to live in comfort after they have retired. All of these people contribute towards Altea´s economy and its amenities, and are an important source of wealth and commerce which benefits not only tourism but also the whole district.

Altea is an example of how the influx of craftspeople and artists has contributed to a town. The town now holds a Crafts Fair which is held in the Plaza de la Iglesia, in the upper part of the town. There are also numerous crafts shops with a wide range of articles made in different materials and styles. It is well worth visiting Altea just to visit these shops. Gastronomy:::: Caragols amb Ceba (snails), Cruet de Peix y Erizos (sea urchins and fish), Coca a la Lluma (flat sponge cake) and a wide assortment of rice dishes.

Altea, nestled in the heart of the Costa Blanca, is undoubtedly a destination where you can enjoy everything that the Costa Blanca has to offer.
