Open sailing boat racing site The ASCN is presenting open sailing boat racing as opportunities to enjoy the ultimate sailing experience. Contact: [email protected] Recommended reading Flying Dutchman - Paul de Schipper Class Examples Flying Dutchman, Formula 1 for open racing dinghy's Website: Flying Dutchman The Flying Dutchman is designed by Conrad Gülcher. The first FD hit the water late 1951 in Loosdrecht (Netherlands). Mr Gülcher had many international sailing connections and promoted the boat intensively causing the class to grow very quickly In 1952 the FD was excepted by the IYRU as international class and also in 1952 the International FD Class Organization (IFDCO) was established. Shortly after the Dutch Class Organization (NFDO) was established and is the oldest Class Organization in the Netherlands. In 1962 there were fleets of FD 36 countries, spread all over the world. After winning the trails with ao 505 the FD became Olympic class in 1960 and stayed Olympic until 1992. The is still considered to be the formula 1 under the conventional sailing dinghies The boat is easy to sail but due to it's may trim options it is difficult and requires extensive training to get the maximum speed out . Hornet: Website: Hornet The Hornet was Jack Holt’s favorite design. This is from the guy that designed the Enterprise, GP14, Cadet, Solo, Streaker , Heron, etc. The Hornet is shown by Portsmouth yardstick to be quicker than a Fireball or Olympic 470 it's ‘slim easily-driven hull’ is unique in performance sailing dinghies and allows the boat to be driven hard upwind with the ability to plane to windward The Hornet outlasts many of its rivals by years and years - you don’t have to buy a new boat every two years to stay at the top – 20 year old boats can still be made competitive and do win championships. Symmetric trapeze boats are more challenging to sail than asymmetric, but don’t let that put off mixed crews – don’t forget symmetrical boats are good in estuaries and where there is strong current as they have a better range of fast course direction than an asymmetric. The association owns the rights to the design.....commercial enterprise can’t suddenly decide to stop making them and devalue your boat in seconds or make a new batch that is faster than the earlier boats. Hornets can be adapted as sailing, materials and fittings progress. Laser: The best known single handed dinghy Website: Laser class The laser is a one design class with very limited freedom in how to fit the boat, it is designed by Bruce Kirby in 1961 and became an Olympic class for men (Laser Standard) in 1993 and women (Laser Radial) in 2004 It is probably the best known single handed sailing dinghy there is, it is in almost every country around the world in large numbers. Flying Junior: Designed as training boat for the FD Website: NFJO The International Flying Junior or FJ is a sailing dinghy which was originally designed in 1955 in the Netherlands by renowned boat designer Van Essen and Olympic sailor Conrad Gülcher. The FJ was built to serve as a training boat for the then Olympic-class Flying Dutchman. The FJ has a beam of 4'11" and an overall sail area of 100 square feet (9.3 m2). These dimensions make the FJ an ideal class to teach young sailors the skills of boat handling and racing. In 1960 the Flying Junior formed its own class organization and by the early 1970s the Flying Junior was accorded the status of an International Class by the International Yacht Racing Union, the precursor to the International Sailing Federation. This status indicates that the class applies to strongly restricted class rules and holds regularly scheduled international regattas.
