Dear Family and Friends, Welcome to the July Edition of the Smoken‟ News. the Sun Is Warm and Everyone Wants to Get Out. We Dear Family and Friends, Welcome to the July edition of the Smoken‟ News. The sun is warm and everyone wants to get out. We first opened our doors in July and every year we celebrate it. This July 10th we have an incredible celebration planned for our 4th Anniversary Party. Music BBQ and a whole pig feast. Joe will be smoking 4 pigs! More on the anniversary party here. It‟s been so much fun these 4 years. Tougher than we ever thought but worth every moment. I still look forward to the artists returning or coming for the first time, the next new special from Joe, and just sitting in a crowd surrounded by friends. This month our new artist is straight from New Orleans - Rockin Jake. Jake is a one-of-a-kind harmonica player on the national scene. He makes his only appearance in Massachusetts July 20th. You can read more about the artist who Downbeat Magazine hails as perhaps the best harmonica player in New Orleans at the link to Rockin‟ Jake. One of our favorite brewers is the PALM Brewing Company from Belgian. We carry 3 wonderful products from them, 2 of them on tap. In honor of this great beer we will be celebrating the Belgium holiday of Feestdag, Begium (independence day) with our friends from Palm. This three-piece band from Japan plays as if its musicians were raised in the Deep South and brought up on Delta blues." - Boston Globe. First formed in 2002, the Tokyo Tramps are a popular blues/rock trio playing frequently throughout New England and beyond. In 2010 they won the River City Ohio Blues Competition and went on to compete at the 2011 International Blues Challenge in Memphis, TN. in February, 2011, The Tokyo Tramps were the runner-up in the 2010 WFNX best local R&B act category and in 2007 they won the WFNX best local blues act category. Please join us for an exciting night as we welcome the return of The Tokyo Tramps! Friday, July 8 at 9PM Johnny Bluehorn and the Caretakers Johnny Bluehorn has entertained countless fans of music in Boston and the Northeast region for more than twenty-five years. He has since become a double-barreled performer as both a trumpeter and vocalist encompassing a varied range of musical styles, from gritty Memphis R&B to rhythmic New Orleans second-line jazz; from swingin' Kansas City blues to heartfelt '70's soul. During these years he has put his talents to work by performing with a plethora of regional artists who have called upon the Blue Horn to add some special magic to their sound. These artists include the Love Dogs, Diane Blue, Mario Perrett, the Hot Tamale Brass band, Chris Fitz “Sax Gordon” Beadle and many others. A few months ago Johnny Bluehorn launched a new phase in his career by fronting his latest project, Johnny Bluehorn and the Caretakers. Backed by some of the region's best instrumentalists, JBH sings and plays a soulful repertoire of music by a variety of artists, including some original compositions. Saturday, July 9 at 9PM Shirley Lewis She is known as Boston‟s “Regal Queen of the Blues.” One of our favorite performers at Smoken‟ Joe‟s, Shirley Lewis is an award-winning blues artist, member of the Down Home Blues Society and all around legend in the Blues community. Ms. Lewis began her career opening for such artist as BB King and Ike and Tina Turner. For Shirley, singing is like poetry and dance all in one, making people have fun while she is on stage. Shirley always fills the house so be sure to make a reservation early. Thursday, July 14 at 8:30PM “Rosy” Rosenblatt and the 11th Hour Band Richard “Rosy” Rosenblatt is simply one of the finest harp players you will ever hear. After joining Erin Harpe and the Delta Swingers they soon won the Boston Blues Society‟s blues challenge and went on to become semi-finalists in the international Memphis competition last Wednesday. Frequently he can be heard wailing away on J. Geils Band tunes with Danny Klein‟s Full House at stages all across New England. Now, Rosy returns to Smoken‟ Joe‟s with his own band, the 11th Hour Band. Originally formed in the late 70‟s, the 11th Hour Band got together to play at the legendary and now defunct Speakeasy blues club in Cambridge. Now they are back and sounding better than ever. Mark your calendars, this is a do not miss show! Friday, July 15 at 9PM The Love Dogs Eddie Scheer, the amazing musician, singer, songwriter, who hosts the best party in Boston every Tuesday night returns with his own band, the incredible Love Dogs. Simply put, The Love Dogs are one of the most exciting, finest, in-demand bands in New England. This is a band that really has the recipe for the Blues. Take one red-hot horn section - we're talkin' alto, tenor, baritone saxes and trombone - down and dirty. Add liberal amounts of barrelhouse boogie-woogie piano and stinging Fender guitar. Pour over a funky and swinging rhythm section that Blues Review Magazine called "the best in the business", and top it all off with a crazy and charismatic front man with one of the biggest blues voices around. Then, season with a few years on the road tearing up juke joints, festivals and concert halls across the U.S. and Canada on both sides of the Atlantic. Sound tasty? It's a recipe for music and mayhem, for intensity and irreverence. Saturday, July 16 at 9PM Luke Mulholland Band One of our favorite bands. Luke Mulholland is a rare young talent. At age 19, he could easily be considered at once a guitar virtuoso, a prolific songwriter, and a vocalist blessed with a voice that sounds wise beyond his years. His music effortlessly blends the blues, rock and pop together with a phenomenal guitar style that has earned him the admiration of fans and fellow musicians alike. He regularly opens for Dickey Betts, Bon Jovi, Blue Oyster Cult, John Mayall, and many other major rock acts. Come listen to The Luke Mulholland band perform songs from their sensational new album, Midnight Carnival. Wednesday, July 20 at 7:30PM On his 40 city tour, from New Orleans, in his only MA appearance – Rockin’ Jake! 5 Time Winner “Best Blues Harmonica” – New Orleans Music Awards! Rockin' Jake has been hailed by many as one of the premier harmonica players in the country. His original sound is a hybrid of second line, swamp funk, blues and zydeco with influences from Paul Butterfield, Big Walter Horton, James Cotton, Muddy Waters, J. Geils Band, and the Fabulous Thunderbirds. Jake has conjured up this formula that is blowing crowds away from coast to coast. Widely known as a touring juggernaut among his peers, his schedule of over 200 performances per year include clubs, concert venues, and festivals. Together for almost 2 decades, Dave B and the Hot Shots retains three of its original members, Dave Birkin (sax/vocals), Mark Shelford (guitar/vocal) and Ken Steiner (acoustic bass/vocal), performing authentic New Orleans sounds from the late „40s through the mid „60s.

Wander among the festival’s seven stages and you can listen to everything from authentic Louisiana Cajun and Zydeco music to Chicago and West Coast Blues, from Latin to Rockabilly and Swing. In recent years, Gator By the Bay has also earned a stand-out reputation for bringing together stellar combinations of musicians in innovative mash-up performances, presenting musical groupings you won’t hear anywhere else. This year is no exception. On Saturday, May 7, San Diego’s own multiple gold guitarist Johnny Vernazza will share the Mardi Gras Stage with blues greats Roy Rogers and John Németh. Often lauded as the “Master of the Slide Guitar”, Roy Rogers’ distinctive style is instantly recognizable. He’s shared duets with such greats as John Lee Hooker and Allen Toussaint, and teamed up with the likes of Norton Buffalo and Ray Manzarek. We’ve got the goss on Splendour, reviews and interviews. So read on tune- loving friends, read on... Sparkadia You have probably heard of Sparkadia. A couple of months ago their debut album Postcards was featured on Triple J. They also recently completed a run of national dates stopping off in Adelaide to play a show with Perth’s the Dirty Secrets at Jive. At the moment they are probably still overseas having just played Glastonbury and T in the Park not to mention several other high profile festivals. I asked Alex, vocalist/guitarist, and Dave, drummer, how they felt about their recent run of good fortune. “It’s pretty sweet”, Dave confides. Of course it wasn’t always like this. “It’s been a real long hard slog and the combination of ‘a lot of luck and a lot of hard work’,” Alex tells me. The guys then explain how they spent nineteen hours in a tour van with The Cops to get to a show in Sydney, having just played in Adelaide. Inevitably, I got onto the subject of Sparkadia’s early days. Alex and Dave were school mates who only bonded over a love of Metallica and ‘Maiden. I gasped in the realisation that I had finally discovered One of the groups defining moments occurred at Splendour in the some like minded heavy metal fans. You know when The Stones start cancelling dates we are looking at something that is epic. The Blues Music Awards in Memphis are cancelled. Live concerts throughout the Carolinas and the world have come to a halt. This is not the flu. This is not a cold.     Dear Family and Friends, Welcome to the October edition of the Smoken‟ News. We have a very special Tuesday night coming up. October 4th is Eddie Sheer‟s Allstars first anniversary and we have a big celebration in store. Be sure to make a reservation or show up early for this great big party. In honor of the celebration, one of our Tuesday night Usual Suspects - Soul Alley has produced a surprise video for the event. You can view it at http://www.youtube.com/soulalley421 . While you are there please check out the new material she has been working on. She will be back at Smoken‟ Joe‟s next month on November 11th. This month we have scheduled two special weekends of music. The first is a weekend of guitar featuring 2 incredible players with vastly different styles. Starting on October 14th Willie McBlind features guitar player Jon Catler. This is a blues band of the original tradition. The “blue note” which defines the early 20th century blues comes from use of tones in between our 12 tone western scale. For us slightly older folks, remember Robert Fripp from King Crimson? Contrast this with the swampy delta sound of Barrett Anderson the next night, October 15th. Here you will find that thick sweet melodies that characterized a lineage from John Lee Hooker to George Thorogood. Barrett has written a nice article in this issue of the newsletter on the influence of Son House to his music. The following weekend we will feature two contrasting sounds of women singers. Friday October 21st the Tristates return with a night of girl-group harmonies and blues-rock sounds.

In 1970 Hamm suggested that scholars should look outside their largely classical music canon, and take into account a// the various forms of music created and consumed in America. His suggestion met with some remarkably intemperate responses, reminiscent of the worst of '50s rock bashing. Hamm struck out on his own, nevertheless, and produced some of the most influential writing on American popular music. According to Hamm, mainstream commercial pop in the first half of the twentieth century spoke largely about one subject: romantic love between a man and a woman. The ten most popular songs in the week of May 8, 1954 were nearly uniform in this regard, to the exclusion of any other topic.The music was equally homogenous in style.Thus, popular music in the early '50s gave a narrow and distorted view: this music did not question life in America, nor, appar­ ently did those who listened to it.
