All rights reserved. 4 February 2016 9 Regarding Our Ontological Constraints As you have read in your Pre-Course Readings, part of being a leader has to do with dealing with certain of the ontological constraints we all have. For many of us these constraints are likely to occur for us as a personal matter. While we will expect everyone to deal with these personal ontological constraints, if you object to sharing or discussing some issue, we respect that. Just say when you do not want to speak about a particular issue. In addition, if you want to decline an invitation to speak about or deal with something that might offend or violate your culture, simply say that you decline. At the same time you should be aware that this course provides you with a unique opportunity and a safe environment in which to complete and leave behind anything you wound up with that leaves you less than fully effective or lessens your quality of life. © Copyright 2008 - 2016 W. All rights reserved. 4 February 2016 11 HOW WE WILL WORK TOGETHER Being in a New World As extraordinary as it may sound, in this course you will find yourself actually beinginanewworld. You will accomplish this by being introduced to and then fully engaging in a new conversational domain. Conversational domain is a term of art in that, even though the individual words are familiar, the term as it is used here has a special meaning. Conversational domains are crafted conversations about a specific area of interest, which conversations provide unique ways of seeing things and provide new possibilities and openings for action in that area of interest that allow for competence and ultimately expertise. All rights reserved. 4 February 2016 12 HOW WE WILL WORK TOGETHER Competence Requires a Conversational Domain If you had the time to look for yourself, you would see that the various worlds in which human beings are engaged that require at least competence are constituted as conversational domains. For example, the world of medicine, and the world of plumbing, and the world of physics are each constituted as a specific conversational domain. If you have a world in which you have achieved some degree of competence, you will see that to some significant degree youhavemasteredtheconversational domain that constitutes that world. © Copyright 2008 - 2016 W. All rights reserved. 4 February 2016 13 HOW WE WILL WORK TOGETHER Specialized Terms and Carefully Crafted Statements More specifically, conversational domains are made up of specialized terms (terms with a special, precise, and sometimes technical meaning), and carefully crafted statements (that is, sentences, paragraphs, and even discrete sections of discourse) that network those terms together such that unique ways of seeing things and new openings for effective action show up in a specific area of interest. In short, a conversational domain is made up of specialized terms and carefully crafted statements to open up a world for us. As Kuhn says in The Structure of Scientific Revolutions,“… though the world does not change with a change of paradigm, the scientist afterward works in a different world.” (p. 121) © Copyright 2008 - 2016 W. All rights reserved. 4 February 2016 14 HOW WE WILL WORK TOGETHER Being in a New World Once mastered, what is said in a conversational domain reveals and makes available new possibilities – that is, perceiving things in new ways, the availability of new ways of being, and new openings for action. Specifically, in this course the conversational domain you are introduced to, given the opportunity to engage with, and finally come to master is designed to leave you with what it is to be a leader and what it is to exercise leadership in ways that will be new for you, and sometimes even startling. It is the various conversational domains presented in the course that open up the possibility of being

    THE COHORT BIOS THE COHORT Aisling Chin-Yee Aisling Chin-Yee is an award winning producer, writer, and director based in Montreal, Canada. Working closely with writers and directors with unique, unapologetic visions in both feature films and documentaries from around the world. She began her production career as an associate producer at the National Film Board of Canada in 2006, joined Prospector Films as producer and director in 2010. Aisling founded Fluent Films in early 2016. She co-created, alongside actor Mia Kirshner, #AfterMeToo, a symposium, series and report that analyzes the issue of sexual misconduct in the entertainment industry.     Journal for Excellence in Business Education (March 2016), 4 (1) When Student Field Case Research Goes Awry: The Undiscovered “Landmark” Forum Kudret Demirkol Komal Thakkar Herbert Sherman Long Island University, Brooklyn Campus Student field research has become an extremely popular instructional methodology employed both in undergraduate and graduate business programs and may be part of a traditional course or as a separate course of study This paper is working case study; a real life disguised situation which documents two MBA graduate students’ attempt to perform field research (a traditional strategic analysis of a firm) in a graduate capstone course with a private, employee-owned organization. The firm they selected was the Landmark Forum, a highly publicized controversial business in the personal development industry. The case documents the problems they encountered obtaining adequate primary and secondary data and closes with the students addressing the options available to them to resolve their perceived problem of inadequate information. This case is recommended to be administered at the beginning of any undergraduate or graduate level course where students are expected to perform field research and therein might encounter similar concerns. Teaching notes are available upon request. INTRODUCTION Student case research, especially field research, poses both practical and ethical nuances that first and foremost are associated with the first step in any field research project, data gathering (direct observation, interviews, and subjects as active participants). There are numerous issues underlying the data gathering process (i.e. obtaining permission from the subjects/firms being analyzed, dealing with Institutional Review Boards, reporting of illegally found activities) usually surrounding the protection of the rights as well as the anonymity of subjects and the organization in question.
