TURKEY [email protected] ABSTRACT Language, which is the main tool of communication that consists actions without understanding and explaining, has vital importance in every field of life. Mother tongue teaching is a process that enhances school-type learning in all disciplines starting from the primary education level. It is also an area that links to deveoplment of thinking skills. In this context, there is a need for applications that encourages mother tongue development and enriches higher tninking skills based on active learning in educational settings. One of the educational activities that develop high-level thinking skills is Mind-Intelligence Games. Intelligence Games are defined as activities offered for individuals to realize their own potentials, to make fast and correct decisions, to produce their own unique solutions to problems, and to renew themselves continuously. In this study, the applicability of Mind Games in writing Turkish lessons was investigated. The aim of the study is to examine the effect of the Intelligence and Mind Games selected in accordance with the content and achievements of the Turkish Lesson Curriculum on the writing process. The research was carried out by quantitative research method on two equivalent groups studying in the 7th grade of a public secondary school. Semi-experimental design with experimental and control groups was used in this research. -

We hardly find a reference to the economic ideas of Muslim scholars who lived in the 16th or 17th century, in works dealing with the history of Islamic economic thought. The period after the 9th/15th century remained largely unexplored. Dr. Islahi has ventured to investigate the periods after the 9th/15th century. He has already completed a study on Muslim economic thinking and institutions in the 10th/16th century (2009). In the mean time, he carried out the study on Muslim economic thinking during the 11th/17th century, which is now in your hand. As the author would like to note, it is only a sketch of the economic ideas in the period under study and a research initiative. It covers the sources available in Arabic, with a focus on the heartland of Islam. There is a need to explore Muslim economic ideas in works written in Persian, Turkish and other languages, as the importance of these languages increased in later periods. -

There is also a collection of books published by Fighting Cock Press, and of issues of Pennine Platform, the journal of Pennine Poets. Fighting Cock Press came into being in 1996 when Mabel Ferrett and Pauline Kirk began to collaborate in publishing high-quality literary works, and provides an outlet for the poetry and artwork of Pennine Poets as well as poetry and short stories by other Northern writers. Grants from the the National Lottery and Arts Council have enabled the Press to publish anthologies of poetry, prose and artwork, and to advise and support more than a hundred writers. Pennine Poets is a group of published writers who meet for regular creative writing workshops, stage readings and festivals. The group was founded at Elland Library in 1966, and was based for many years at the home of Mabel Ferrett in Heckmondwike. KARAVELIOĞLU Be bu Rûm illeridür bunda suhandânlar olur Bu İrem gülşenidür murg-ı hoş-elhânlar olur Abstract If one of the signs of the level of development of countries is cities, the other is the level of the life of science, art and culture performed in these cities.Viewing the situation of Balkan geography under the domination of Ottomans since 15th century, it is seen that there was a very lively literary and cultural life especially in some city centres.These centres were not only creating a convenient environment but were also raising poets and writers for many large centres, initially to Istanbul. Places like Skopje, Pristina, Prizren, Yenice Vardar, Shkodra, Silk, Plovdiv, Kyustendil, Bitola, Smederevo, Sarajevo, Tetovo, İştib, Serres were the centres we know the life of literature was lively and where a good number of poets were brought up. Among these, it is known that especially in 16. Century, numerous poets grew in Pristina, Prizren, Skopje and Vardar Yenice. In this paper, the contributions these four Balkan cities made to classical Turkish literature are discussed in sum. MİLLİ EDEBİYAT DÖNEMİ 20. yy. başlarında bazı aydınların savunduğu Batıcılık, Osmanlıcılık ve İslamcılık görüşlerinin Osmanlı İmparatorluğu’ndaki çözülmeye engel olamaması, yeni bir anlayışın, Türkçülük düşüncesinin güçlenmesine yol açtı. Türkçülük ve Türk milliyetçiliği düşüncesinin güç kazanmasıyla Milli Edebiyat akımının oluşumu başladı. Servet-i Fünun döneminin hüküm sürdüğü bir dönemde Mehmet Emin Yurdakul’un ‘’Cenge Giderken’’ adlı şiirindeki sözleri ve hece ölçüsünü kullanarak ulusal duyguları dile getirmesi Milli Edebiyat yolunu açtı. Tanzimat döneminde Ahmet Vefik Paşa, Ahmet Cevdet Paşa, Şemsettin Sami gibi sanatçılar dil ve tarih üzerine yaptıkları çalışmalarla Türkçülük ve milliyetçilik akımının hazırlayıcısı oldular. Bu edebi hareket, Ziya Gökalp’in Türkçülük düşüncesiyle beslenmiştir. Milli Edebiyat II. Meşrutiyetten sonra 1911 ‘de Ömer Seyfettin, Ali Canip Yöntem ve Ziya Gökalp tarafından Selanik’te çıkarılan ‘’Genç Kalemler’’ dergisiyle başlatılan bir edebi harekettir. Bu hareket 1923’e kadar sürmüş, ancak Cumhuriyet dönemi edebiyatı içinde de sürmüştür. Bu düşüncelerin yaygınlaşmasında yazılan yapıtların yanı sıra Türk Yurdu, Türk Derneği, Türk Ocağı gibi kuruluşların ve Halka Doğru, Yeni Mecmua gibi dergilerin de etkisi olmuştur. Chapter 5 Disciplining Language Dragomans and Oriental Philology What is the use of the Turkish language? Reply: Very little indeed in Theology and Sacred Philology. Unremarkable in Politics. [But] frequent in our dealings with the Ottoman Porte; there the Turkish language matters. —August Pfeiffer1 It is a striking phenomenon that at a time of manifold state connections with the Ottoman Empire, as established already in the fifteenth century by various Western powers, above all by the Venetians, especially in the numerous negotiations of the lagoon city [Venice], France and Austria with the Porte on the affairs of the Venetian War, peace, and commerce, no greater engagement with the Turkish language could be effected beyond these purely practical purposes. —Franz Babinger2 ranz Babinger, arguably the most influential historian of the Ottoman Empire of his generation, was quite perceptive in contrast- F ing early modern Europeans’ widespread ignorance of the Ottoman language with their intense diplomatic engagements with the Ottomans. What is especially telling about Babinger’s formulation, however, might be its passive construction: while “states” are busy “connecting,” “nego- tiating,” and “establishing” diplomatic relations, no one in particular is responsible for “engagement with the Turkish language” (or lack thereof, as the case may be). This agentless absence highlights widespread and enduring European ignorance of Ottoman literature and high culture more 140 Disciplining Language 141 generally. It also points to invisible technicians—chiefly dragomans— whose philological, linguistic, and translation efforts have received far less recognition than those of university-based Oriental philologists and their modern hagiographers and disciplinary heirs, the Orientalists. This and the next two chapters consider how dragomans’ linguistic and translational works served as key sites for the articulation of Ottomanist knowledge in a broader early modern emergent Republic of Letters.
