This good and learned man bade the would-be principal go and formally accept the cadiship proposed by his colleague, and leave the rest to him. Kemal-Pasha-zade did as he was told. And so on the morrow Hajji-Hasan-zade presented to Sultan Bayezid the young man's request and suggested that it should be granted. But Mu^eyyed-zade, who was present, interposed, saying that the applicant was one of the most gifted and promising young men of the day, and that it would be a grievous misfortune if he were lost in a cadiship, the more especially as the Tashliq principalship, which would give him an excellent opening, was just then vacant; and he prayed the Sultan to confer this on him. Hajji-Hasan-zade had not the effrontery to oppose his colleague's request, which was accordingly granted. Mu'eyyed-zade's kindly offices by no means ended here; he frequently brought his protege under the notice of the Sultan, and succeeded in obtaining for him grants of money as well as other favours. It was he too who proposed to Bayezid that Kemal-Pasha-zade should be commissioned to write the history of the Ottoman power in Turkish, as it was desirable to have the story in the national language, Monla Idris's work on the subject being in Persian. -

We hardly find a reference to the economic ideas of Muslim scholars who lived in the 16th or 17th century, in works dealing with the history of Islamic economic thought. The period after the 9th/15th century remained largely unexplored. Dr. Islahi has ventured to investigate the periods after the 9th/15th century. He has already completed a study on Muslim economic thinking and institutions in the 10th/16th century (2009). In the mean time, he carried out the study on Muslim economic thinking during the 11th/17th century, which is now in your hand. As the author would like to note, it is only a sketch of the economic ideas in the period under study and a research initiative. It covers the sources available in Arabic, with a focus on the heartland of Islam. There is a need to explore Muslim economic ideas in works written in Persian, Turkish and other languages, as the importance of these languages increased in later periods. -

Language Use in the Ottoman Empire and Its Problems

Dockrat Johannesburg 2006/7 Abstract The Ottoman Empire, an imperial power that existed from 1299 to 1923, was one of the largest empires to rule the borders of the Mediterranean Sea. Ottoman Turkish was used especially between the 16th and 19th centuries during the Ottoman Empire. This ornamented, artificial language separated the general population from intellectual and palace elite and a communication problem followed. Although the minorities of the Ottoman Empire were free to use their language amongst themselves, if they needed to communicate with the government they had to use Ottoman Turkish. This thesis explains these language differences and the resulting problems they created during the Empire. Examples of original correspondence are used to highlight the communication differences and the difficulties that ensured. From this study, the author concludes that Ottoman Turkish was not a separate language from Turkish; instead, it was a variation of Turkish in inexistence for approximately 600 years. Findley, Advisor Jane Hathaway Alan Beyerchen Copyright By Serdar Poyraz 2010 i Abstract My dissertation, entitled “Science versus Religion: The Influence of European Materialism on Turkish Thought, 1860-1960,” is a radical re-evaluation of the history of secularization in the Ottoman Empire and Turkey. I argue that European vulgar materialist ideas put forward by nineteenth-century intellectuals and scientists such as Ludwig Büchner (1824-1899), Karl Vogt (1817-1895) and Jacob Moleschott (1822-1893) affected how Ottoman and Turkish intellectuals thought about religion and society, ultimately paving the way for the radical reforms of Kemal Atatürk and the strict secularism of the early Turkish Republic in the 1930s. In my dissertation, I challenge traditional scholarly accounts of Turkish modernization, notably those of Bernard Lewis and Niyazi Berkes, which portray the process as a Manichean struggle between modernity and tradition resulting in a linear process of secularization. On the basis of extensive research in modern Turkish, Ottoman Turkish and Persian sources, I demonstrate that the ideas of such leading westernizing and secularizing thinkers as Münif Pasha (1830-1910), Beşir Fuad (1852-1887) and Baha Tevfik (1884-1914) who were inspired by European materialism provoked spirited religious, philosophical and literary responses from such conservative anti-materialist thinkers as Şehbenderzade ii Ahmed Hilmi (1865-1914), Said Nursi (1873-1960) and Ahmed Hamdi Tanpınar (1901- 1962). -

The approach to the theme of love was metaphorical and mystical in classical Ottoman poetry. During the period of modernisation (1839-1923), poets either rejected the theme of love altogether or abandoned Islamic aesthetics and adopted a Parnassian approach arguing that love was the expression of desire for physical beauty. A great variety of discourses on love developed during the republican period. Yahya Kemal sets the theme of love in Ottoman Istanbul and mourns the end of the relationship with the beloved who incarnates his conservative vision of national identity. -

Lesson Plan for Teach Turkey ©©©©© Ottoman Lyric Poetry Author of Lesson: Danita Dodson, English teacher, Hancock County High School, Sneedville, Tennessee Length of Lesson: 3 class blocks (or 4-5 45-minute periods) Grade Level: 12, post-secondary (adaptable to grades 7-11 also) Subject Area: English, World Literature Introduction/Rationale: Although its capital city and over one-third of its territory lay within the continent of Europe, the Ottoman Empire has consistently been regarded as a place apart, inextricably divided from the West by differences of religion and culture. It has been perceived as militaristic, barbaric, tyrannical, and exotic; such stereotypes have led historians to measure the Ottoman world against a Western standard and to find it lacking. As a result, outside of Turkey, Ottoman Turkish literature is rarely included in any canonical anthology or representation of world literature; in fact, it is almost invisible. Furthermore, even Islamic Studies typically downplays the significance of the Ottoman cultural legacy, often presenting Ottoman literature as derivative of Persian and Arabic traditions and accepting it rarely as an appropriate topic of study in its own right. For the Ottomans, literature was poetry first and foremost, and nearly all the poetry was love poetry. The Ottoman love lyric (or gazel) has had, since the time of the Troubadours, a strong influence on European conceptions of love and love poetry, a fact that Western literary history fails to recognize. This unit exposes students to a necessary but little -known body of literature, involving them in the examination of selected aspects of Turkish culture and history. -
