In total, 600 Springsteen fans from the United States, Canada, Europe, the Nordic countries, South-Africa and South America filled an online survey distributed to them via fan forums. The results showed that on average the respondents had been Springsteen fans for three decades and had attended to 27 shows in total. The primary function of listening to Springsteen’s music was to achieve self-awareness. Over half of the respondents listened to Springsteen’s music daily and in average, over half of the fans’ total music consumption was by Springsteen. The fans were also heavily involved in popular forms of fan consumption. Analyses showed some gender and cultural differences, particularly with females scoring higher level of fan identification and consumption, but no age differences. These findings indicate that it was possible to identify quantitative differences between fan behavior and identification which have implications for rock music marketing and management industry. Keywords: Bruce Springsteen, rock music, fanship, fandom, worship Introduction Statistics from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) of the highest-certified music artists in the United States, based on certifications on wholesale shipments, show that Bruce Springsteen ranks as no 15 on the album list with his 65.5 million sold albums in the U.S.A alone.

  • A Long Walk Home: the Role of Class and the Military in the Springsteen Catalogue Michael S
A Long Walk Home: The Role of Class and the Military in the Springsteen Catalogue Michael S. Neiberg United States Army War College and Robert M. Citino National World War II Museum1 Abstract This article analyzes the themes of class and military service in the Springsteen canon. As a member of the baby boom generation who narrowly missed service in Vietnam, Springsteen’s reflection on these heretofore unappreciated themes should not be surprising. Springsteen’s emergence as a musician and American icon coincide with the end of conscription and the introduction of the All-Volunteer Force in 1973. He became an international superstar as Americans were debating the meaning of the post-Vietnam era and the patriotic resurgence of the Reagan era. Because of this context, Springsteen himself became involved in veterans issues and was a voice of protest against the 2003 Iraq War. In a well-known monologue from his Live 1975-85 box set (1986), Bruce Springsteen recalls arguing with his father Douglas about the younger Springsteen’s plans for his future. Whenever Bruce provided inadequate explanations for his life goals, Douglas responded that he could not wait for the Army to “make a man” out of his long-haired, seemingly aimless son. Dr. Neal helped me realize a framework within which I could explore my interests, and Dr. Simonelli kept my spirits alive so I could nurse the project along. My concert-going partner in crime, cruisin’tobruce, also deserves my gratitude, sharing expenses and experiences with me all over the eastern seaboard as well as some mid-America excursions. She tolerated me well, right up until the last time I forgot the tickets. I also must recognize the persistent assistance I received from my pal and companion Zero, my Maine Coon cat, who spent hours hanging over my keyboard as I typed. I attribute all typos and errors to his help, and thank him for the opportunity to lay the blame at his paws. And lastly, my thanks and gratitude goes out to Mr. Bruce Frederick Springsteen, a man of heart and of conscience who constantly keeps me honest and aware that “it ain’t no sin to be glad you’re alive (Badlands).”

Springsteen frequently changes up the W set list and takes requests from the audience, so every performance is unique. In December, Springsteen released The Ties that Bind: The River Collection, a four-CD-plus three-DVD special edition boxed set of The River—originally released in 1980— which included outtakes as well as photographs and other memorabilia. To celebrate the release, Springsteen and the band appeared on Saturday Take Me to Night Live; the rehearsals for the telecast led him to think about a tour. “The first call I got was that Bruce wanted to start tour rehearsals immediately after the SNL performance, since the band would be together and everyone would have had a warm-up,” explains Springsteen’s longtime production designer Jeff Ravitz, of Intensity Advisors, headquartered in North Hollywood, California. the River It was the holiday season, and the Bruce Springsteen revisits his time line that Springsteen was 1980 album with some very considering “nearly put me into an 2016 lighting technology apoplectic seizure,” Ravitz says. • A Vote for Change and US Strategy for North
A Vote for Change and U.S. Strategy for North American Integration Christopher Sands, Hudson Institute, USA PNA North American Policy Brief no. 1 1 October 2008 The 2008 presidential election in the United States has become paradoxical. On the one hand, the dominant theme of virtually every candidate in the party primaries was “change.” And since there is no incumbent candidate (neither a sitting president nor a sitting vice president is running this year) for the first time since 1928, there will be a break with the current administration regardless of who wins the presidency. And on the other hand, turbulent financial markets, an unsettling conflict with global terrorist groups, and the dislocating effects of globalization have led many voters to express a desire for a change – away from the changes that they have experienced since the end of the Cold War. Americans want a change in the White House to bring them stability in an uncertain world. It is worth remembering that compared to Europe, North America has been a conservative continent. Noted political scientist and sociologist Seymour Martin Lipset once said that Canada was, “a country of evolution, not revolution,” in contrast with the United States. In Mexico, the legacy of bloodshed and violence that accompanied the Mexican Revolution (1910-1920) left its mark, and helped produce the most durable one party state of the 20 th century; when the country embraced democratic politics in the 1990s in the midst of economic and other changes, the conservative side of the Mexican political culture remained strong. The United States is perhaps the only one of the three North American countries where a major party candidate could give himself the label of “maverick” and benefit politically from the association with a strong-willed and untamed colt.

  • 1 When They Said Sit Down, I Stood Up
1 When They Said Sit Down, I Stood Up: Springsteen’s Social Conscience, Activism, and Fan Response Susan Hamburger, Ph.D. The Pennsylvania State University “Glory Days: A Bruce Springsteen Symposium” Monmouth University, West Long Branch, New Jersey September 9, 2005 Bruce Springsteen’s increasing politicization from supporting other musicians’ causes (No Nukes and Amnesty International) to social issues he personally embraces (food banks) inspires audiences to follow his lead with charitable causes. Whether donating food, money, or labor to community food banks, raising money for the Kristen Ann Carr Fund for cancer research, or saving the Tillie façade on Palace Amusements, Springsteen’s fans draw inspiration from his example. Yet dissention among fans arose when Bruce joined Vote for Change to actively campaign for John Kerry. This paper explores the interplay between Bruce’s activism and fan reaction. From singing at the No Nukes concerts to food bank exhortations from the stage to actively campaigning for John Kerry, Bruce Springsteen has consciously and thoughtfully selected the causes he supports and speaks out on behalf of. Although Bruce played at a benefit for presidential candidate, George McGovern in 1972, he did not involve himself in politics or causes, keeping a low profile. Beginning with the Musicians United for Safe Energy (M.U.S.E.) anti-nuclear benefit concerts, September 22-23, 1979, 2 filmed and released as No Nukes, Bruce’s association with grassroots activism and benefit concerts set the stage for his first phase of charitable work—showing up and playing music. By lending his musicianship to the benefit, Bruce implied that he supported the anti-nuclear movement yet he did not speak out on M.U.S.E.’s behalf either in the concert program or from the stage.

I am an assistant professor of education at Penn State University. I’m also the guest editor of the Bank Street Occasional Papers Series issue #40 titled, “Am I Patriotic?” The purpose of the issue is to complicate how we think about and enact patriotism, with a particular focus on how teachers teach and students learn about patriotism. So how does this relate to Bruce Springsteen and the interview that you’re about to hear (or read)? In mid-December of 2008, I spent two days at the Woody Guthrie Archives—then in New York City, now in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

  • Bruce Springsteen: Live!
