THE ENLIGHTENMENT MOVEMENT AND CULTURAL REVIVAL IN AZERBAIJAN IN THE LATE 19TH CENTURY By Turkay Gasimova Submitted to Central European University Department of History In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Supervisor: Professor Alfred J. CEU eTD Collection i Abstract In this thesis I focus on the late 19th century Azerbaijani history from the perspective of intellectual history. I mainly talk about the Enlightenment Movement with an emphasize on the intellectual debates on Religion and Secularism. Intellectual influences of the newly emerged intelligentsia with a special focus on cultural and intellectual life in Baku is also one of the main focal points of the presented work. My main argument in the thesis is that, without cultural and intellectual revival of late 19th century, which became possible with Baku oil boom, establishing the first Democratic Republic in Muslim world in 1918 wouldn’t be possible. I start with Baku Oil Boom of 1870s and continue with the establishment of the first Azerbaijani newspaper, “Akinchi” and then after examining the main intellectual debates, I conclude the thesis with the two most influential Azerbaijani intellectuals of the late 19th century.

How to Cite: Suleymanli, M. (2021). Modernization and culture in Azerbaijan: second half of the XIX century: beginning of the XX century. Linguistics and Culture Review, 5(S1), 125-138. https://doi.org/10.37028/lingcure.v5nS1.1324 Modernization and Culture in Azerbaijan: Second Half of the XIX Century: Beginning of the XX Century Mubariz Suleymanli Professor of the Azerbaijan State Culture and Art University, Baku, Azerbaijan Abstract---The end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, characterized by the expansion of enlightenment, development of education, press and art in Azerbaijan, marked by many cultural events, went down in history as the formation of national thought and national statehood. But these facts have been ignored for many years, and were presented from a subjective and biased point of view during the Soviet times. However, the cultural heritage of that period, especially the reforms implemented in 1918- 1920 to give equal rights to all citizens, regardless of ethnic, religious and political affiliation, gender, state attributes and reforms in education, science and culture, restored the state independence of the Azerbaijan people. In this sense, the study of cultural processes and modernization in Azerbaijan, including cultural reforms during the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic (1918-1920) is relevant both in the terms of studying historical experience and the successful implementation of cultural construction and integration into the world in modern times. The main purpose of the study is to explore the cultural basis of the process of historical renewal and modernization in Azerbaijan, to use the results of this experience in building a modern democratic civil society.

  • Chapter 1 the Azerbaijanis Until 1920
Chapter 1 The Azerbaijanis until 1920 The Azerbaijanis live in an area that has been a center of ideological ac- tivity, confrontation, and accommodation between different cultures. Un- til the second half of the nineteenth century, the delineation between their identities as Turks, Azerbaijanis, Iranians, and Muslims was not clear, and Azerbaijanis rarely referred to themselves as “Azerbaijani.” The de- velopment of the Azerbaijanis’ collective identity intensiªed and became a struggle toward the end of the nineteenth century, when a distinctive Azerbaijani national identity emerged as a political force. The polemics and competition over the identity of the Azerbaijanis were stimulated by revolutionary changes occurring in all the empires surrounding the Azerbaijanis, their increased exposure to the growing nationalism of the peoples around them, the idea of modern nationalism, and the political activities of various ideological movements that competed in the region at that time: Pan-Islam, Pan-Turkism, Iranian nationalism, and commu- nism. The competition between these rival ideologies further intensiªed in the ªrst quarter of the twentieth century after the fall of the Ottoman Em- pire and the subsequent disengagement of Muslim and Ottoman identi- ties, and the division between Turkic cultural identity and Turkish state identity that occurred with the establishment of the Republic of Turkey. The change in the state identity of Iran also intensiªed the struggle over the identity of the Azerbaijanis. Until the establishment of the Pahlavi regime in the twentieth century, the identity of Iran was not ex- clusively Persian, but supra-ethnic. From the eleventh century until the founding of the Pahlavi regime, the political leadership of Iran was mostly Turkic, and both Turkic and Persian cultural elements inºuenced 16 l borders and brethren the ethnic character of the regime and the culture of the country.

This is a true copy of the thesis, including any required final revisions, as accepted by my examiners. I understand that my thesis may be made electronically available to the public. iii Abstract This study examines the little-known history of cultural transformation initiated by Azerbaijani reformers between the 1850s and 1930s. Relying on a unique body of sources, which include handwritten manuscripts, literary works, unpublished memoirs, periodicals, correspondence, and political parties’ records, the research explores the new cultural settings that emerged after the incorporation of Azerbaijan into the Russian empire. New means of communication and new types of sociability, in a global context of urbanization and cosmopolitanization, gave rise to secular modernist reformers and empowered both European- educated Azeri male and female elites to express modern ideas on public education and gender roles. The introduction of secular education for Muslim young women, initiated by modern- educated male intellectuals and industrialists, advanced a cohort of independent and publicly active Azeri women who struggled for equal rights with men.

A strip of land situated between the Mediterranean and the Black Seas, the post-Soviet Caucasus embarked on a painful identity quest at the turn of the third millennium. This – still ongoing – quest involves several daunt- ing choices: between Moscow, Washington and Brussels, between oil and democratic values, and between feudal realities and revolutionary ideals. Throughout the last decade, the Yerevan-based Caucasus Institute has been conducting in-depth research of the conflicting and often subtle trends in the regions’ politics. This volume contains a selection of research papers published by the Caucasus Institute since 2001 in Armenian, Russian and English, which best represent the challenges faced by this varied region at this crucial stage of development. • The Creation of the Azerbaijani Identity and Its Influence on Foreign Policy
UNISCI DISCUSSION PAPERS Mayo de 2005 THE CREATION OF THE AZERBAIJANI IDENTITY AND ITS INFLUENCE ON FOREIGN POLICY AUTHOR:1 ALBERTO PRIEGO MORENO UNISCI / Complutense University of Madrid DATE: May 2005 The Azerbaijani identity is a quite complex identity: They are ethnically Turks and Muslims, although they follow the Shiite interpretation. They have also lived under Tsarist and Soviet rule, thus acquiring a Russian heritage. For all these reasons we can affirm that Azerbaijanis have received several and very different influences, all of which are reflected in the current Azerbaijani foreign policy. 1. The Azerbaijanis Some days ago, one of my students asked what an Azerbaijani is. Another one, with Persian ancestors, replied that an Azerbaijani is like a Gallego2 in Spain. At that moment I didn’t agree with him, but after reflecting on this question I consider that it could be a good comparison. The Azerbaijani people do not live exclusively in the current Republic of Azerbaijan. They live along a huge territory which goes from the Caucasus to Northern Iran, near the city of Zenjan. It comprises one independent state, Azerbaijan and three provinces under the sovereignty of the Islamic Republic of Iran: East Azerbaijan, West Azerbaijan and Ardebil. In the middle of those territories, we can find the dividing line, the Araz River. The break up of historical Azerbaijan took place in 1828 as a result of the Turkmenchay Treaty which buried the hatchet between Iran and Russia. The Azerbaijani identity is a very sensitive and difficult issue. Azerbaijanis have some features that make them people with especial characteristics.
