BUTTERFLY AND PUNT PARTNERS OF THE BUTTERFLY GARDEN (K-6) Acmon Blue (Icaricia acmon) Non-migratory: Adults seen spring through fall Larval Diet: Buckwheat, lupine, clover and many kinds of legumes. Size: 3/4"-I" Description: Bluish-purple in color; orange edge at the base of hind wing; large orange spots under the hind wing. Adults seen in many communities. Did You Know? Eggs are laid on the host plant from January onward, and the butterflies pupate in leaf litter beneath the plants. larval stage feeds on: California Buckwheat (Eriogonum fasciculatum) Origin: Native Plant Size: 1' - 2' tall shrub with long stalks Leaf Description: Small course leaves attached to long branching stems. The underside of the leaves are covered in a soft, white fuzz. Flower Description: Large compound head with white flowers. Blooms from March to October. Did you know? Buckwheat is one of the few acceptable food plants for the acmon blue butterfly. Echo Blue (Celastrina ladon echo) Non-migratory: However, its range extends from Alaska to Central America Larval Diet: Many different plants, including wild lilac/ceanothus, buckeye, chamise, lotus and huckleberry. Caterpillar's eat buds, flowers, leaves and young fruit. Size: 7/8"-1 1/4" Description: Light purple; front wing tips bordered in black; hind wings bordered in white. Can live in all local communities Did You Know? Larvae are often cared for by ants. larval stage feeds on: Ceanothus or Wild Lilac (Ceanothus spp.) Origin: Native Plant Size: Chaparral shrub can be 6' tall or more. Lepidoptera of the Tolman Bridge Area (2000-2011)
LEPIDOPTERA OF THE TOLMAN BRIDGE AREA, ALBERTA, 2000-2011 Charles Bird, 8 March 2012 Box 22, Erskine, AB T0C 1G0 [email protected] The present paper includes a number of redeterminations and additions to the information in earlier reports. It also follows the up-to-date order and taxonomy of Pohl et al. (2010), rather than that of Hodges et al. (1983). Brian Scholtens, Greg Pohl and Jean-François Landry collecting moths at a sheet illuminated by a mercury vapor (MV) light, Tolman Bridge, 24 July 2003, during the 2003 Olds meetings of the Lepidopterist’s Society (C.D. Bird image). Tolman Bridge, is located in the valley of the Red Deer River, 18 km (10 miles) east of the town of Trochu. The bridge and adjoining Park land are in the north half of section 14, range 22, township 34, west of the Fourth Meridian. The coordinates at the bridge are 51.503N and 113.009W. The elevation ranges from around 600 m at the river to 800 m or so near the top of the river breaks. In a Natural Area Inspection Report dated 25 June 1982 and in the 1989 Trochu 82 P/14, 1:50,000 topographic map, the land southwest of the bridge was designated as the “Tolman Bridge Municipal Park” while that southeast of the bridge was referred to as the “Tolman Bridge Recreation Area”. In an Alberta, Department of the Environment, Parks and Protected Areas Division paper dated 9 May 2000, the areas on both sides of the river are included in “Dry Island Buffalo Jump Provincial Park”. -

Behavioural thermoregulation is an important adaptation of the five high arctic butterflies found at Lake Hazen (81 “49‘N., 71 18’W.), Ellesmere Island, NorthwestTerritories. Direct insolation is used byarctic butterflies to increase their body temperatures. They select basking substrates andprecisely orientate their wings with respect to the sun. Some experiments illustrate the importance of this. Wing morphology, venation, colour, hairiness, and physiology are briefly discussed. RI~SUMÉ.Comportement thermo-régulatoire des papillons du haut Arctique. Chez cinq especes de papillons trouvés au lac Hazen (81”49’ N, 71” 18’ W), île d’Elles- mere, Territoires du Nord-Ouest, le comportement thermo-régulatoire est une im- portante adaptation. Ces papillons arctiques se servent de l’insolation directe pour augmenter la température de leur corps: ils choisissent des sous-strates réchauffantes et orientent leurs ailes de façon précise par rapport au soleil. Quelques expériences ont confirmé l’importance de ce fait. On discute brikvement de la morphologie alaire, de la couleur, de la pilosité et de la physiologie de ces insectes. INTRODUCTION Basking in direct sunlight has long been known to have thermoregulatory sig- nificance for poikilotherms (Gunn 1942), particularly reptiles (Bogert 1959) and desert locusts (Fraenkel 1P30;.Stower and Griffiths 1966). Clench (1966) says that this was not known before iwlepidoptera but Couper (1874) wrote that the common sulphur butterfly, Colias philodice (Godart) when resting on a flower leans sideways “as if to receive the warmth of the sun”. Later workers, noting the consistent settling postures and positions of many butterflies, did not attribute them to thermoregulation, but rather to display (Parker 1903) or concealment by shadow minimization (Longstaff 1905a, b, 1906, 1912; Tonge 1909). -

Did You Know? This is the only hummingbird in this area that does not migrate. Barn Owl (Tyto alba) Diet: Small mammals £fee;14"-20"inlength Description: Pale face with dark eyes; heart-shaped outline around the face; rusty brown upper parts; underparts vary from white to cinnamon. Did you know ? The barn owl nests and roosts in dark cavities in buildings, cliffs, and trees in the upland, they hunt at night for small mammals in the salt marsh. Barn Swallow (Hirundo rustled) Migratory: migrates to S outh America in the winter. Diet: Insects Size: 5 3/4" - 7 3/4" in length Description: Iridescent blue back, with a cinnamon colored belly and throat. Most distinctive is a long, deeply forked tail. Didyou know? The barn swallow builds its open cup shaped nest under bridges, or on building walls with mud collected from the salt marsh and mudflats. These birds drink, eat, and bathe while flying. Cliff Swallow (Hirundopyrrhonotd) Migratory: Breeds in the spring and summer in North America. Migrates south in the fall to winter in South America, from Paraguay to coastal and southeast Brazil. Diet: Insects and berries Size: 5 Vz" in length Description: Identified by its square tail with buff orange colored rump and blackish throat. -

GENERAL INFORMATION Purpose of 5-Year Reviews: The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) is required by section 4(c)(2) of the Endangered Species Act (Act) to conduct a status review of each listed species at least once every 5 years. The purpose of a 5-year review is to evaluate whether or not the species’ status has changed since it was listed (or since the most recent 5-year review). Based on the 5-year review, we recommend whether the species should be removed from the list of endangered and threatened species, be changed in status from endangered to threatened, or be changed in status from threatened to endangered. Our original listing of a species as endangered or threatened is based on the existence of threats attributable to one or more of the five threat factors described in section 4(a)(1) of the Act, and we must consider these same five factors in any subsequent consideration of reclassification or delisting of a species. In the 5-year review, we consider the best available scientific and commercial data on the species, and focus on new information available since the species was listed or last reviewed. -

Acknowledgments Our research team has conducted butterfly surveys for nine consecutive years, from 2002 through 2010, with 2002-2004 introductory to the lands and species, and 2005-2010 in more depth. My valuable field team this year was composed of friends with sharp eyes and ready binoculars Larry Crowley who recorded not only the butterflies but blossoming plants and wildlife joined by Jean Morgan and Amy Chu both joined enthusiastic butterfly chasers. Venice Kelley and John Barr, professional photographers, joined us on many surveys. With their digital photos we are often able to classify the hard-to-identify butterflies later on at the desk. The surveys have been within Boulder County Parks and Open Space (BCPOS) lands. Therese Glowacki, Manager-Resource Manager, issued a Special Collection Permit for access into the Open Spaces; Susan Spaulding, Wildlife Specialist, oversaw research, maintained records of our monographs and organized seminars for presentation of data. -

PAPILIO (NEW SERIES) # 25 2016 ISSN 2372-9449 ERNEST J. OSLAR, 1858-1944: HIS TRAVEL AND COLLECTION ITINERARY, AND HIS BUTTERFLIES by James A. Scott, Ph.D. in entomology University of California Berkeley, 1972 (e-mail: [email protected]) Abstract. Ernest John Oslar collected more than 50,000 butterflies and moths and other insects and sold them to many taxonomists and museums throughout the world. This paper attempts to determine his travels in America to collect those specimens, by using data from labeled specimens (most in his remaining collection but some from published papers) plus information from correspondence etc. and a few small field diaries preserved by his descendants. The butterfly specimens and their localities/dates in his collection in the C. P. Gillette Museum (Colorado State University, Fort Collins, Colorado) are detailed. This information will help determine the possible collection locations of Oslar specimens that lack accurate collection data. Many more biographical details of Oslar are revealed, and the 26 insects named for Oslar are detailed. Introduction The last collection of Ernest J. Oslar, ~2159 papered butterfly specimens and several moths, was found in the C. P. Gillette Museum, Colorado State University, Fort Collins, Colorado by Paul A. Opler, providing the opportunity to study his travels and collections. Scott & Fisher (2014) documented specimens sent by Ernest J. Oslar of about 100 Argynnis (Speyeria) nokomis nokomis Edwards labeled from the San Juan Mts. and Hall Valley of Colorado, which were collected by Wilmatte Cockerell at Beulah New Mexico, and documented Oslar’s specimens of Oeneis alberta oslari Skinner labeled from Deer Creek Canyon, [Jefferson County] Colorado, September 25, 1909, which were collected in South Park, Park Co.
