The Museum has a programme of temporary exhibitions, which either comprise its own pieces or touch upon themes related with the Collection. English language. doi: 10.1386/pjss.7.1.49/1 Families in Europe Anália Torres ISCTE Rita Mendes ISCTE Tiago Lapa ISCTE Abstract Keywords Analysing data from the European Social Survey, in this article we try to capture family the main features of European families. Accounting for the changing trends of marriage the last forty years in family arrangements, practices and values we also discuss gender some theoretical and methodological issues raised by the exercise of comparing values countries. General configurations like family size, composition of the household, work and family living arrangements and marital status are identified and analysed by clustering European families European countries. The insertion of men and women in the labour market, fertility rates and the hours of work of parents are another central focus of discussion. Our results tend to contradict some stereotypes. The majority of Europeans are for- mally married or living together, conjugal disruption is transitory for the divorced and the separated tend to return to conjugality. With modern ideals family is, for all European countries and with very similar averages, the most valued dimension of personal life. Families in Europe: convergence and divergence The fundamental objectives of this article are to describe and analyse the basic features of family structures in Europe on the basis of the European Social Survey (ESS) data, evaluating the similarities and differences between countries. It is an attempt to create a portrait that, while necessarily only capturing the main trends, acts as a point of departure in the search for evidence that explains the regularities encountered.

Portugal is not among the primary European destinations for refugees or immigrants; possibly, in part, because there are fewer migrants in Portugal, it is an E.U. country where new arrivals are still met with a degree of enthusiasm. Hard right, anti-immigrant parties—on the rise in other parts of the E.U.— have not gained much traction in Portugal. This work looks at the relative invisibility of immigrants in Porto, the country’s second largest city, which may make those immigrants a less visible target for intolerance and political opportunism, but may also impede a larger, more self- determinant role for immigrants and their communities in greater Portuguese society. A major contributing factor to immigrant invisibility is the absence (outside of Lisbon and southern Portugal) of neighborhoods where African immigrants are concentrated. In Porto, communities do not form around geography; instead, communities form around institutions.
