Welcome visitors and Taoseños! You are invited to explore the diversity of this region, through a self-guided tour. The two-hundred year old Taos Plaza, and the streets that radiate from it like spokes, form the National Historic District of Taos. It contains a number of national and state landmarks which are Historic testimonials to the rich and complex cultural history of T aos. The T aos Valley has been a major trade and travel route since human presence was first felt in the area. Archeological evidence suggests that people have been using and moving through the Taos Valley for, at least, the past 9,000 years. The ancestors of the Pueblo people, commonly known as the Anasazi, were the first permanent inhabitants of the Valley. Room blocks and pit houses in the Taos area testify to their presence since 900 AD. Around 1200 AD, they aggregat- ed into small above ground structures of 50-100 rooms. Many believe the Taos Pueblo was constructed around 1450 as a multi-story TAOS complex. However, archeologists predominantly place the date of construction of Taos Pueblo in the 14th century on or about 1350. Unfortunately , there is no known recorded date. In any case, the Pueblo Indians depended upon nature for their survival, and therefore treated nature as an organizing and spiritual element in their lives. At the time of the arrival of the Europeans, all of Taos Valley was in the domain of Taos Pueblo Indians. In 1540, Francisco de Coronado, a Spanish conquistador and explorer, was authorized to explor e the area by the king of Spain. -

Reflexive Regionalism and the Santa Fe Style
Reflexive Regionalism and the Santa Fe Style Ron Foresta Department of Geography University of Tennessee, Knoxville Abstract:The Santa Fe Style is an assembly of cultural features associated with the city of Santa Fe and its surrounding Upper Rio Grande Valley. The style, often dismissed as a confection for tourists because of its gloss and worldliness, is in fact a manifestation of reflexive regionalism. This overlooked cultural process occurs when worldly outsiders fashion regional traits into responses to the life challenges that they and their extra- regional reference groups face. In this case, outsiders fashioned what they found in early-twentieth-century Santa Fe into responses to challenges that accompanied the rise of American industrial capitalism. Threats to elite hegemony, the destruction of established lifeways, and the need for new perspectives on American society were prominent among the challenges to which the Santa Fe Style responded. Reflexive regionalism is thus the kind of cultural process that Regulation Theory posits but has found difficult to convincingly identify in the real world, i.e., one that adapts individuals and societies to periodic shifts in the logic and practices of capitalism. I examine seven individuals who made signal contributions to the Santa Fe Style. Each reveals a key facet of Santa Fe’s reflexive regionalism. Together they show how this process created the Santa Fe Style and, more generally, how it works as an engine of cultural invention. The key concepts here are reflexive regionalism, the Santa Fe Style, cosmopolitanism, Regulation Theory, the work of the age, and the project of the self. -

New Mexico’s “Land of Enchantment” offers a rich southwestern cultural legacy amid the striking contrasts of its natural beauty. And it has been for centuries a place where cultures converged, from early man to the Indian cliff- dwellers, to the Spanish conquistadors and priests, and finally to the Anglo arrival in the mid-1800s. To this day the Indian, Hispanic, and Anglo cultures mix their cultures, traditions, and talents, and yet they remain distinct. And that mixture will be ever present in MPMA’s conference. There will be sessions devoted to cultural convergence, material culture as well as to the burning museum issues of the day. Illegal antiquities, anyone? You will also be able to participate in unique sessions and workshops: there will be pottery classes on Taos and Hispanic pottery; a forum on the pending closure of three Indian museums located in the MPMA region; and sessions devoted to Taos history, its alternative ways of living (past and present), and its amazing art collections. Chair Watson characterized the CPRC as a statutory body charged with identifying and advising on the protection of the State's cultural properties. CPRC meetings are run by parliamentary procedure. He asked that the attendees follow those rules, sign in and turn cell phones off. D.C. 20560 www.aaa.si.edu/askus Transcript Preface The following oral history transcript is the result of a tape-recorded interview with John Gaw Meem on December 3, 1964. The interview took place at 785 Camino Del Monte Sol in Sante Fe, NM, and was conducted by Sylvia Loomis as part of the New Deal and the Arts project for the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution. The reader should bear in mind that he or she is reading a transcript of spoken, rather than written, prose. Interview SYLVIA LOOMIS: This is an interview with Mr. John Gaw Meem, architect, 785 Camino Del Monte Sol, Santa Fe, on December 3, 1964. The interviewer is Mrs. Sylvia Loomis of the Santa Fe office of the Archives of American Art. And one of the subjects to be discussed is Mr. Meem's participation in the Federal Art Projects of the 1930's and '40s. But first Mr. Meem, will you tell us something about your background, where you were born and where you received your education? JOHN GAW MEEM: Well, I was born in South America, in Brazil. My parents were Americans and my father was an Episcopal clergyman in southern Brazil. I was born in 1894. My father came from Virginia and he had gone to the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Virginia, for college work. I suppose because his father and grandfather and his great grandfather all went there so when the time came for me to come to the United States in 1915, it was natural that I went to the VMI as the fifth. -

CSFINEARTSCENTER.ORG Contact: Warren Epstein, Media Relations and Community Outreach Manager 719.477.4316; [email protected] Other Artist Bios Jozef Bakos (1891–1977) The Polish artist founded Los Cinco Pintores (the five painters) , Santa Fe's first Modernist art group, and was dedicated to works that depicted specifically American subjects, such as the New Mexico landscape, local adobe architecture and Native American dances. He studied art with John E. Thompson at the Albright Art Institute in Buffalo, New York, and taught at the University of Colorado in Boulder. In 1920, during a break from teaching, Bakos visited Walter Mruk, a childhood friend and artist who was living in Santa Fe. During his stay he exhibited some paintings together with Mruk at the Museum of Fine Arts in Santa Fe. Gustave Baumann (1881–1971) Baumann was one of the leading figures of the color-woodcut revival in America. Born in Magdeburg, Germany, Baumann moved to the U.S. at the age of 10 and by 17, attended night classes at the Art Institute of Chicago. After spending time in Brown County, Ind., as a member of the Brown County Art Colony, Baumann headed to the Southwest in 1918. He found Taos to be too crowded and social but eventually ended up settling in Santa Fe, where he became known as a master of woodcuts, while also producing oils and sculpture. Tom Benrimo (1887 – 1958) A self-taught artist, Benrimo was born in San Francisco and lived there until the San Francisco earthquake and fire of 1906 destroyed his home. Relocating to New York with his family, he worked as a scenic designer for theatrical shows and created illustrations for various advertising companies.
