Women Architects
E-Newsletter | May 2012 Women Architects What do the Hearst Castle in California and many of the buildings in Grand Canyon National Park have in common? They were designed by women architects! In this month's newsletter, we feature two early women architects - Julia Morgan and Mary Colter. California's first licensed woman architect, Julia Morgan, studied architecture in Paris. After failing the entrance examination to the École des Beaux-Arts twice, she learned that the faculty had failed her deliberately to discourage her admission. Undeterred, she gained admission and received her certificate in architecture in 1902. By 1904, she had opened her own architecture practice in San Francisco. After receiving acclaim when one of her buildings on the Mills College campus withstood the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, she was commissioned to rebuild the damaged Fairmont Hotel. With this project Morgan's reputation as well as her architecture practice was assured. Julia Morgan Morgan designed her first building for the YWCA in Oakland in 1912. She then began work on the YWCA's seaside retreat Asilomar, near Monterey, which has hosted thousands of visitors since its founding in 1913. Today Asilomar is a state historical park. Morgan's work on the Hearst Castle, which is also now a state historical monument, cemented her reputation. The Castle, located at San Simeon, has attracted more than 35 million visitors since it opened to the public in 1958. Architect Mary Colter was asked by railroad magnate Fred Harvey to design hotels and restaurants along the Santa Fe Railway route, with the objective of bringing tourists to the southwestern United States. -

Chair Watson characterized the CPRC as a statutory body charged with identifying and advising on the protection of the State's cultural properties. CPRC meetings are run by parliamentary procedure. He asked that the attendees follow those rules, sign in and turn cell phones off. Member Maxwell asked if this could be explored further and brought up for consideration at the next meeting. Chair Watson directed Mr. Drake to coordinate with the HPA and asked Dorothy Moore to list as an agenda item for the next meeting. -

D.C. 20560 www.aaa.si.edu/askus Transcript Preface The following oral history transcript is the result of a tape-recorded interview with John Gaw Meem on December 3, 1964. The interview took place at 785 Camino Del Monte Sol in Sante Fe, NM, and was conducted by Sylvia Loomis as part of the New Deal and the Arts project for the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution. The reader should bear in mind that he or she is reading a transcript of spoken, rather than written, prose. Interview SYLVIA LOOMIS: This is an interview with Mr. John Gaw Meem, architect, 785 Camino Del Monte Sol, Santa Fe, on December 3, 1964. The interviewer is Mrs. Sylvia Loomis of the Santa Fe office of the Archives of American Art. And one of the subjects to be discussed is Mr. Meem's participation in the Federal Art Projects of the 1930's and '40s. But first Mr. Meem, will you tell us something about your background, where you were born and where you received your education? JOHN GAW MEEM: Well, I was born in South America, in Brazil. My parents were Americans and my father was an Episcopal clergyman in southern Brazil. I was born in 1894. My father came from Virginia and he had gone to the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Virginia, for college work. I suppose because his father and grandfather and his great grandfather all went there so when the time came for me to come to the United States in 1915, it was natural that I went to the VMI as the fifth. -

McBride, September, 2018 ABSTRACT THE VOICES BEHIND CHANGE: WOMEN’S LIBERATION DURING THE 1970s AT THE UNIVERSITY OF GUELPH Amy L. McBride Advisor: University of Guelph Dr. Linda Mahood The purpose of this thesis is to highlight a student narrative from the perspective of female undergraduates at the University of Guelph from the 1970s, but also to add to the canon of Canadian women’s history. This thesis will argue that female undergraduates at the University of Guelph took part in the Women’s Liberation movement of the 1970s and helped to make Guelph a more liberated and equal opportunity institution. This will be indicated by various examples of the collective action and activism of female undergraduates as they fought to make changes on campus. Using the campus student newspaper, The Ontarion, as the primary source was vital because the newspaper is where the voice of the women students could be heard. The Ontarion is an untapped primary resource providing a wealth of information for assessing and analyzing the emergence of feminism at Guelph. The Ontarion has helped to put a spotlight on feminism and the role of female undergraduates as they organized to make changes at Guelph. Taking on this role included using opinions of feminist role models, notably ideas pertaining to personal and political issues. -
