ITʼS HAPPENING October 3, 2007 AT STATE Groundbreaking set for Barry Hall Groundbreaking ceremonies for Richard H. Barry Hall, at the site of the former Pioneer Mutual Life building in downtown Fargo, are scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 11. Barry Hall will house the College of Business and the Department of Agribusiness and Applied Economics. Located at 811 2nd Ave. N., Barry Hall is named for the late R.H. “Dick” Barry, a renowned financial consultant who was described as “Fargo’s doctor of financially ill businesses.” The building’s name was approved by the State Board of Higher Education on Sept. 20. The estimated cost of the project is $15 million. The work includes a total of 135,000 square feet, with a three-story classroom wing and a 250-seat auditorium. The projected completion is set for the spring of 2009. “This is an exciting project that will give NDSU exceptional and impressive facilities for its business programs. It will provide for great opportunities for our faculty, staff and students,” said President Joseph A. Chapman, noting that The Barry Foundation made a significant gift to the building project. “Funding came through Momentum: the $75 Million Campaign for North Dakota State University, demonstrating how private contri- butions can have a profound and lasting impact on the university.” Founded in 1986, The Barry Foundation is based in Fargo. Its mission statement reads, “The Barry Foundation is a family foundation that affirms its founder’s life-long philan- thropic spirit and vision. Emphasis is placed on proactive philanthropy where opportu- nity is created to benefit individuals and communities both locally and globally.” “This generous contribution will have a huge impact on the downtown community in addition to adding outstanding opportunities for the university,” said Jim Miller, executive director of the NDSU Development Foundation.

Nationally, Blue Key began in 1925 at the University of Florida, with the NDSU chapter being the 28th established in the country. The purpose of Blue Key is to work with students and faculty to further the interest of the university. Qualifications for persons selected for membership are rigorous: scholastic involvement, leadership abilities, and involvement in campus activities and service. It was a men’s organization until 1976 when it became open to women, with NDSU being the first chapter to initiate women members. In 1979, Kathy Dean became president of the NDSU chapter, a first among the 124 Blue Key chapters in the country. • Airing on the Side of Agriculture Is Included in the Blog Section of NAFB.Com
Volume 4, Number 8, August 1, 2016 by Larry A. Quinn RINGSIDE: EYEWITNESS TO HISTORY – For more than 50 years, Jerry Lackey (Emeritus member, San Angelo, TX) has worked as an agricultural journalist and farm broadcaster. A newly published photo documentary book shows many of the Presidents, Governors, Congressmen and key agricultural leaders who Jerry met and interviewed from his “ringside” position as a journalist. “Writing one’s life story never appealed to me,” Jerry said. However, it occurred to him that the only way he was privileged to interview and/or take pictures of the public figures was because of his chosen field of journalism. Dee Lackey, Jerry’s wife, “touted this project persistently for some time,” and contributed her editing skills to completing the book. Jerry purchased his first camera, a Kodak Brownie Starflash, and a film processing kit from the Sears Roebuck catalog using some of his grandmother’s “egg money.” The 80‐page book is filled with images and identifying cutlines that will take the reader back to the agricultural history that Jerry covered with his camera lens, reporter’s pad, microphone and video camera. Reared in the Texas Hill Country, Jerry worked for state and national publications as well as pursuing a parallel career in television with Texas Agriculture Television Network and radio broadcasting with Voice of Southwest Agriculture Network. He is agricultural editor emeritus for the San Angelo Standard‐Times where he is best known for his Windmill Country columns, which have been published by that newspaper for more than 25 years. Jerry’s numerous honors include the Oscar in Agriculture Award, Excellence in Agricultural Journalism Award, Shepherd’s Voice Award and Man of the Year in Texas Agriculture Award.
