Kering and the Festival De Cannes Will Present the 2017 Women in Motion Award to Isabelle Huppert the Young Talents Award Will Be Presented to Maysaloun Hamoud
Kering and the Festival de Cannes will present the 2017 Women in Motion Award to Isabelle Huppert The Young Talents Award will be presented to Maysaloun Hamoud International film icon Isabelle Huppert will receive the third Women in MotionAward presented by Kering and the Festival de Cannes. Isabelle Huppert has chosen director and scriptwriter Maysaloun Hamoud to receive the Young Talents Award. François-Henri Pinault, Chairman and CEO of Kering, Pierre Lescure, President of the Festival de Cannes, and Thierry Frémaux, General Delegate of the Festival of Cannes, will present these awards during the official Women in Motion dinner on Sunday, 21 May 2017. Credits: Brigitte Lacombe For the third Women in Motion programme, official partner Kering and the Festival de Cannes will present the Women in Motion Award to French actress Isabelle Huppert. Exceptionally free-spirited and bold, Isabelle Huppert has taken many artistic risks in her career, and whilst acting with leading names, she has successfully established her own style in a variety of registers ranging from drama to comedy. She has pushed back boundaries with the strong and far-from-stereotypical roles that she has played since the early days of her career. Whether being directed by legendary filmmakers or by a brilliant new generation of talented filmmakers, Isabelle Huppert is one of the most inspirational figures in the world of cinema. Isabelle Huppert has in turn chosen to honour Maysaloun Hamoud by awarding her the Young Talents prize. In 2016 this young Palestinian director and scriptwriter made her first feature film, In Between (Bar Bahar), which chronicles the daily lives of three young Palestinian women living in Tel Aviv, torn between family traditions and their desire for independence. -

Haunting the Beach in the Films of François Ozon

A NOTE ON VERSIONS The version presented here may differ from the published version. If citing, you are advised to consult the published version for pagination, volume/issue and date of publication The possibilities of a beach: queerness and François Ozon’s beaches FIONA HANDYSIDE The assertion that François Ozon’s films are part of ‘a new queer cinema’ has become a commonplace of academic writing about the director.i Equally, recent criticism of the films has been unable to ignore the insistence with which they return to a beach setting, to the extent that the Guardian’s film critic, Peter Bradshaw, labelled it his ‘signature location’, conferring the beachscape the role of auteurist sign in Ozon’s filmography.ii Of his eleven feature films released since 1998’s Sitcom, four have heavily featured the beach (Sous le sable/Under the Sand [2001] 5x2; [2005]; Le Temps qui reste/Time to Leave [2006]; Le Refuge/The Hideaway [2009]). Furthermore, two of his shorts (one of which is rather more medium length, with a running time of an hour) also make use of the beach as a key site for the playing out of their stories (Une robe d’été/A Summer Dress [1996]; Regarde la mer/See The Sea [1997]). -

But drugs have invaded their lives. One day they overdose, and Louis dies. Mousse survives, but soon learns she’s pregnant. Feeling lost, she runs away to a house far from Paris. Several months later, Louis’ brother joins her in her refuge. Interview with François Ozon Pregnancy A year ago, an actress friend of mine called to give me some good news: she was pregnant. Two days later, I called her and proposed we do a film inspired by her pregnancy. At first she was delighted, but a week later she pulled out. This was her second child, she knew what she was in for and didn’t feel capable of being both an actress and pregnant. Disappointed, I was about to scrap the project when my casting director Sarah Teper informed me: «There are three pregnant actresses in Paris right now, and one of them is Isabelle Carré.» My enthusiasm immediately returned. -

The New Girlfriend
Presents THE NEW GIRLFRIEND A film by François Ozon (105 min., FRANCE, 2015) Language: French Official Selection 2014 TORONTO INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL Distribution Publicity Bonne Smith Star PR 1352 Dundas St. West Tel: 416-488-4436 Toronto, Ontario, Canada, M6J 1Y2 Fax: 416-488-8438 Tel: 416-516-9775 Fax: 416-516-0651 E-mail: [email protected] E-mail: [email protected] www.mongrelmedia.com 1 Synopsis After the death of her best friend, Claire falls into a deep depression, but a surprising discovery about her friend’s husband gives her a new taste for life. 2 3 Interview with François Ozon Where did you get the idea for THE NEW GIRLFRIEND? The film is a loose adaptation of a 15-page short story by Ruth Rendell, similar in tone and spirit to the television series Alfred Hitchcock Presents. In it, a woman discovers that her friend’s husband is a closet crossdresser. He becomes a girlfriend to her, but when he declares his love and tries to make love with her, she kills him. I read the short story at the time of SUMMER DRESS, some twenty years ago, and wrote a faithful adaptation for a short film, but I couldn’t get financing or find the right cast so I abandoned the project. But the story stayed with me, indeed haunted me, over the years. It occurred to me that most of the films I liked about crossdressing were the ones where the character crossdresses not out of a personal desire but because of outside constraints: Musicians disguise themselves as women to outfox the mafia in SOME LIKE IT HOT; an unemployed actor becomes an actress in order to get a role in TOOTSIE; another broke actress turns actor in VICTOR VICTORIA.
