Ritchie · wrote and directed both movies, and his work for "Lock, Stock, and · Two Smoking Barrels" earned him MTV's Best New Filmmaker Award. The cast includes nearly 20 principle actors who each .have their ; own personalities and storylines. The plot surrounds a flawless 86- carat diamond snatched from Russian jewelers, which acts as a com­ mon thread for all the characters. Ritchie's cinematic skill is apparent in the way the story and characters are woven together without leaving anything behind .. The film flickers between past, present and future so that it is easy for the non-attentive moviegoer to miss things. "Snatch" is similar to "Pulp Fiction" in other ways as well. While the genre has been exhaustively explored, it wasn't until :'''Pulp Fiction" and Tarantino's other works that gangster films were comedic. Witty dialogue, dark satire and gallows humor were used to · liven up the tired gangster genre, and these devices permeate both films.
