This office had so much power, it played a part in deciding who would rule the people. It had not always worked this way. Before this, the ruler was chosen based on who his or her parents were. -

History, being true, was its own virtue, and as such valued for the spiritual, scriptural and political truths it could reveal to the present.1 Yet at the same time it often provided a vehicle for more specific political argument, since the people who wrote it were members of educated elites whose careers almost inevitably involved them in intrigue and conflict.
