ZANESVILLE MUSEUM OF ART Collection Committee Meeting Agenda and Minutes, January 8, 2020 2

IR/09/25/2017.003 Elizabeth Ayers, Three Roses, circa 1904, watercolor on paper. Proposed Gift of Elizabeth “Betsy” Harrison. Estimated insurance value $250

A note about the works: These works have been on long term loan to the museum from Ms. Harrison (an heir of Mr. Ayers, the artist’s brother) and on view in rotation in the 2nd floor Cultice cases. Ms. Elizabeth Ayers, sister of ZMA founder Mr. Edward Ayers, was a decorator of note at Weller Pottery and a watercolorist. The ZMA has several of her hand-decorated vases on view in the ZMA Pottery Gallery, but until now, we do not have any of her works on paper in the permanent collection.

Gift of Mr. Frank Norman IR/05/28/2019.001 Weller Pottery Company, Decorator, Hester Pillsbury, Hudson State Vase: California, circa 1920, earthenware and glaze. Gift of Mr. Frank Norman. Estimated insurance value $750 IR/05/28/2019.002 Weller Pottery Company, Decorator, Hester Pillsbury, Hudson State Vase: Indiana, circa 1920, earthenware and glaze. Gift of Mr. Frank Norman. Estimated insurance value $800 IR/05/28/2019.003 Weller Pottery Company, Decorator, Hester Pillsbury, Hudson State Vase: Washington, circa 1920, earthenware and glaze. Gift of Mr. Frank Norman. Estimated insurance value $1,000

A note about the works: These works have been on loan to the museum from Mr. Frank Norman and on view in the Pottery Gallery. The ZMA currently owns the largest collection of Weller Hudson State Vases (16) and these four (4) proposed accessions—California, Indiana, and Washington, are not among the states and shapes in our collection.

IR/07/11/2019.001 Weller Pottery Company, Sicardo Candlestick, 1907, earthenware and glaze. Gift of Mr. Frank Norman. Estimated insurance value $2,500

A note about the work: This Sicardo candlestick, on loan and exhibited in the American Art Pottery Gallery, is a rare work. A good example of Sicardo and a unique form to the ZMA’s permanent collection, this piece is etched/signed by Sam Weller, Jacques Sicard, Henri Gellée among other notable Weller decorators. It has been suggested by the donor Mr. Frank Norman that this candlestick was a parting gift presented to J. Sicard by S. Weller in 1907. However, the work’s provenance suggests this is not the case.

Gift of Mr. Allan Wunsch IR/05/28/2019.001 Weller Pottery Company, Decorator, Hester Pillsbury, Hudson State Vase: Michigan, circa 1920, earthenware and glaze. Gift of Mr. Allan Wunsch. Estimated insurance value $750

IR/05/28/2019.002 Weller Pottery Company, Decorator, Hester Pillsbury, Hudson State Vase: Vermont, circa 1920, earthenware and glaze. Gift of Mr. Allan Wunsch. Estimated insurance value $750
